The winner is (surprise, surprise) "Tree Island". Now we shall wait for the second voting.

I wonder how will we be able to choose "lighting and ambience" without looking at the actual townscreen and having only a rough concept

Congrats to all voters. Tree Island seems to be much more appreciated than a forest setting. Maybe the art didn't do justice or we can speculate on the nostalgia factor, but at the end of the day that won't change the result. We should learn what we can and prepare for the next votes.

Personally, I hope that we will be able to choose full moon night. Elves were always somehow connected to the moon and silver light would give the whole scenery a truly mystical lure and would match the Sylvan theme (at least in my opinion, especially the middle part).

I'm not entirely sure. My expectations, however, will be a triple vote between "bright, sunny noon", "orange/purple evening (kinda similar to H5)", or "night with brilliant full moon". At least, that would be my preference. Personally, I'd opt for the nighttime look myself. Sunny noon would be a bit too bland, and while the twilight scene would be appropriate for, well, the Twilight Stags, I don't want it to be TOO similar to H5.

I was thinking more along a different angle: seasons. How about voting between a lush green spring setting, a warm golden summer or a cold white winter (with elves iceskating on the frozen lake )?

I cannot understand why people have a problem with the fact that this tree is surrounded by water. In Heroes V it was also a tree on an island but there was a bridge wwith defence walls guarding it, so Elves could perfectly go through it and did not touch water at all. And concerning the problem of limited space - this tree is gargantuan. Building can be easily created around its trunk, within its crown as well as in the lake surrounding it, so next problem is solved. What about stability, you may ask? I am sure that through Earth magic such tree can be formed to grow desired buildings. Such concept was even created in our world. In such case it would probably not fall because of its weight. If the building would be on the water/ground level, only solid foundation is required, which we could see in Ashan quite often (constructions in the swamps). I hope that resolves any doubts because complains about this town screen truly aggravate me.

It was no doubt somewhat inspired by the World Tree motif, as such it's not entirely without merit.
However, the H5 town screen was just one part of an (IMO) larger issue: All the town screens consisted of one large building,
with multiple, near identical buildings around it.

However, my opinion is that a world tree would work better as a grail construct
placed in the backdrop rather than a constant center of attention.

And really, my main problem with the H5 Town screen was the sunset (sunrise?);
not only was I forced to look at the annoying lens flare effect every so often,
it also made the town screen effectively brown, and we had quite a few of those already.

Just pointing out this thing here, but so far the concept detailed on the wiki page is only hypothetical. Even if they do finally manage to do it for real, there are some other issues that need to be resolved. One of them is potential decay and death of the plant materials involved. Dead plants have a habit of rotting and falling apart over time, how will you work with that issue once it happens? Your house could quite literally die .

this is pretty much spot on. H5 Sylvan was just a central pillar surrounded by a flat surface. Buildings were just sort of put down wherever and didn't really add much to the feel of the town: it didn't really evolve visually like in h3 where building the unicorn dwelling added an entire forest. i'm afraid a giant tree will lead to  buildings just not having any *oomph* to them, but instead just plopping down a small ring with grass, adding a statue on top of it and calling it a unicorn glade even though there is no way unicorns would feel at home there

Not that it is the end of the world to me, but my main problem is that Elves are supposed to be beings that dwell in the forest, in harmony with nature, nearly indistinguishable from the surroundings.
But instead, now we have a town on an island in the middle of a fething lake. Specifically outside the forrest they supposedly love so much. Sure you got a big @ss tree on the island, but it's still different. And the tree-town isn't exactly indistinguishable either, in fact, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I've always considered the whole "central pilar" concept of the town, something specifically developed for HV, so the camera has something to rotate around. And IMHO, in some towns like Haven and Stronghold, and maybe Inferno, that worked. But in others Necro, Fortress and Sylvan it kinda didn't. So without 3d camera eye-candy, I highly doubt that it will feel like it did in HV, which is for many the reason to pick the Tree.
But that's all water under the bridge now. and like I said, it's not the end of the world.

Water Tree won... what a surprise.
I think it was a first poll from Ubi where no one (or nearly no one) was truly angry about "losing" - both concept seems all right for Sylvan.

It is shame we don't have more such kind polls, where we choose better alternative and we don't vote for less evil (like in case of line-ups).

We still see percent outcome so it still could persuade people to change their voices for winning picture.
And that is only one thing, I pretty sure you can find more "wrong things" if you "dig up" futher.
