Then wouldn't they have used an artwork of medusa with staff? For example they could have used (a recoloured version of) the pearl priestess. They picked this artwork for a reason.
It's similar with the trogs. I don't expect those to wield a weapon, because then the heroes 3 or 4 trog would have been preferable over that screenshot from MM7.
Because maybe she looks more similar to thus Medusa than to the Priestess. Different colour scheme, no body tattoos, no indian style clothes, etc.
