5 to Go
Okay, here's the deal: The world is about to end, you are the commander of a spaceship that will take the cultural heritage of 5 nations with you, their art, science, technology, philosophy and the people will then be used to start a new colony in some other galaxy.
The rules are:
1- The spaceship has limited room for people, so the population is not a factor. Whether you choose China or Monaco, the number of people you save is fixed.
2- You can NOT vote for a country you were born in and you are currently living in.
3- You dont have to but it is encouraged to give your reasons for your picks.

Hard question. Modern nations, for the most, do not match anymore the greatness they had long time ago.
On the other side, USA for example, did not give anything valuable by the past, but today are so dynamic that would be impossible to imagine creating a new world without a representative.
Need thinking.

blizzardboy said: 1) EU
I'm not sure if this is not cheating. In a way European culture is so interlinked within its nations, it would be impossible to dissect. How can you leave the Greeks out if you're gonna take the Italians in for Renaissance? But then, so is all history, that way of thinking can go back to Egypt or even Mesopotamian cultures accordingly.
So, no, EU is not a single option.

You know what Voltaire said about the Holy Roman Empire?
-They are not holy, they are not Roman, and they are just a bunch of Germans.
That's three birds with one stone.

i don't have any particular nations in mind.
my answer boils down to tribal groups who still live in the wild, and haven't changed for centuries. mostly tribals from africa and south america(amazonian).
model humans, in my opinion, never "evolved" past the jungles and savannahs. my highest respect goes to them. they are the model of humans i would want, if i were to ever spread humanity to another planet.
basically, any humans who wouldn't destroy whatever environment they inhabited. those who could live amongst nature, without ruining it; but rather, working with it. and of course, being at the mercy of whatever it threw their way, ultimately.

Not the most inspired, but I'd probably take:
- America for their science
- UK for their music
- France for their art
- Italy for their culture in general
- Japan for their culture in general

No one, simple as that
Seriously, though, I'd only see fit to bring along scientists. No culture is worth preserving.

If I have to save people based on national stereotypes, the mission is doomed by default. "US for their technology", right, why not "US for their culture of ignorant hamburger-devourers"? Or... "Japan for their pedo-cartoons". And so forth, including everyone's country (don't be offended, you know that the vast majority of your fellow countrymen are hardly an advertisement for humanity in space). In short, if I have to save 5 potential idiots without any other distinctive characteristics to pick from except their nation of birth, I'll probably blow the ship apart after it launches to save them from their inevitable but slower death.

The scope was to see what culture/nation you appreciate more. The scenario bears little weight on the matter, you take it too seriously.

... and my answer to that is that I appreciate achievements of individuals no matter where they are born and generally don't have very high opinion for the national stereotypes (except when they are part of a joke - see Polandball for instance).

Which is totally besides the point because you were asked for your top 5 of a people's heritage (cultural/scientific/etc.) and not about your thoughts on individual worth.
