General tips include the following:

Go for creatures first. Week 1 on moderately rich map should be enough to build lvl 6, sometimes 7 in your main town.

Use single units of fodder in battle and wait.

Use a good main hero(barbs rule).

If you play on 200% the game changes slightly. Gold is more important, as is good start army.

Expand. A lot. If you let AI come to you it will be strong. But if you come to it, you will likely meet first player week 1 or 2(on random maps, XL with, say, 7 AIs). On 200% it can be tricky to beat some AIs, but on anything lower your army should be much more viable.

And also use many heroes. Most of them should pick gold and explore a map.

Any tips for taking on Ranged monster stacks or very fast flying monsters like Dragon Flies?

I'm starting to get a bit better at the game but ranged mobs and in particular Dragon Fly hives always give me trouble in the first week or two.

Against ranged monster stacks, you're going to be interested in Tactics (especially at the Expert level), fast-moving units (i.e.
Dragon Flies), and (maybe) Haste. You might also want to consider creating 1-unit stacks of high-speed units and moving them next to shooters on the first round (don't attack and take the retaliation!) to prevent them from firing as well.

As for very fast flying creatures, Tactics will be your friend once again. Position your important units in a manner where they won't be hit, and use beefy units or 1-unit stacks to lure the fast units forward (and then wipe them out with your army since they're in range). Of course, Slow and Blind can be quite useful as well in these cases.

While you won't always be able to negate losses completely with these strategies, they should help you keep them at a minimum. I hope this helps!

Tactics won't work in hives though.
Your best bet is hoping you have initiative before them and then Mass Slow, but that probably won't happen in the first couple of weeks.
Speed artifacts are also great for getting the initiative and if playing HotA, artifacts that decreases enemies morale and luck.
You can also use one strong level 7 stack to take them all out and use Cure if necessary, but you probably won't have many level 7's the first weeks either.

Plural? Are we using the same templates? Oh, it's the map you know by far.

This is what happens when you know a map by far

bloodsucker having tons of Archangels, Titans, Phoenixes and an Azure Dragon is not common after 2 weeks, but in your map I guess everything is possible.

Yes but I was taking months to get them cause I wasn't always moving in the right directions and yes, in my map everyting is possible. I just added the twelve works of Heracles.

That's Green's (my second most powerfull oponent) and the birds and angels came mostly from banks in his territory, while I was batting him, so that he moved in explored fields. Now, he isn't following anymore...
I will upgrade my troops in his 'normal' Hill Fort and take the his town today, to get my Capitol, after I take two of his utopias to get the money. Got it?

After all I saw I wouln't had just enouch movement and took a different path.

Make sure Gem get Earth Magic + Intelligence in 1st scenario, You need take control 2nd Rampart up north and Middle Castle with builded Fort, it should be your Base, because from there you can take control of 2 Necropolises + and have Gate which lead to final AI town. 2 Ramparts should have treasury buildings so you will money to build and recruit Castle Forces. In first Scenario you can learn Chain Lighting from Solmyr(sadly no other heroes with level 4 spells were avaible). New Begginning is about goood Rush.

Yeah Diplo is extremely overpowered in it's default state.
A shame developers did'nt care more about balancing the skills, unless they really wanted to make some suck (Learning, First Aid, Eagle Eye) and some nearly gamebreaking. (Earth Magic, Air Magic, Logistics and Diplomacy)

They didn't care much because they thought H4 will propose better, then H5 and so on, there will be a pattern to follow and improve with each sequel. The problem is that with H4 going into Oblivion then H5 changing the visual perspective and cartoonish textures we loved so much, we found ourselves stuck with H3 for 15 years. And then skills start to suck indeed.

15 years ago nobody cared about diplo, we even used it in tournaments map, as those had only little stacks to join, not game breaker.

A bit worried about those screens I see from Bloodsucker. Such armies week 2, what will he have month 12?

@Edit: BS, can you replace your screens vertically? The page display is screwed.

There is very little about luck there, more about picking the right hero class.

A Battle Mage, Barbarian, Overlord or Beastmaster or a Conflux hero if you wanna be sure of Earth and Air Magic.
Demoniacs and Rangers are also fine.
Actually I play all factions and all classes, but some classes are clearly better than others, Witches, Druids, Wizards and Heretics are not very good imo.

No, Tactics won't. But I was addressing the first half of his question with my comment (i.e. fighting Dragon Fly neutral stacks).

As for Dragon Fly Hives, you may want to check them first to make sure they're doable (i.e. "Lots of Dragon Flies" would be much more doable than "Horde of Dragon Flies"). Then, you'll probably want to transfer ranged units you have to a scout hero temporarily. Bring in less-valuable units (such as creatures from scout heroes) to soak up hits since the AI seems to have a fetish for them.

In addition, a hero with high Defense skill and/or Armorer helps reduce losses substantially. Even Basic Curse can help reduce damage from 2-5 to just 2. I would cite Shield as well, but that gets purged off on the first hit by the Dragon Flies.

As Phoenix said, initiative and Expert Slow is quite handy, but the former is typically only present in hive fights if you have Efreet Sultans or Dragon Flies.
