Runewords
Runewords are for specific types of items. To answer your question:
Yes the three runes must be in a shield only. Ancient's Pledge(RalOrtTal) can only be used in shields and only in shields with the exact number of matching sockets. Three runes to the word = three sockets needed. No more, no less. By placing the runes in a different type of item you will only recieve the rune bonus it affords. Each rune has a different bonus for different types of items. The rune itself will tell you what the bonus is for which type of item.

oh, got anymore of em "rune words"? because hey i got plenty of runes and nothing to do with em lol
do you always fight two of baal btw? if thats the case i was really lucky because one ran at me and i killed that one before the other one started to chase me. If thats not the case i must really have messed up because after i killed one another one started to attack me 
was alot easier than expected though, but my best move so far must have been to hire barani (cold magic dude) to fire away at diablo while i was catching his distant fire shot and kept using potions... no risk to die there hehe

Hmm.. fishy. They should be selling it there (in Australia, yes?). Well if you are able to, you can buy it in the official blizzard store with a credit card.
Strange, even here, in such a little country Lithuania, we have Diablo on sale.

Why Not Play On Battlenet?
That's the best place to do it. IP is really laggy. Bnet has great servers. On bnet we can make a private game for whoever wants to play.
Well now that I think of it. If someone has a pirated game then they wouldn't be allowed to play bnet.
I want to play. Problem is, I'm on the other side of the world from europe. my time zone is pacific standard time.

friggin v1.10 made my game nuts lol, now there are tough creatures everywhere lol.

When we finally get together for the game, I'll be playing a necromancer. That's my favorite class. Whoever else joins us, we could always use a good strong paladin. His auras will make my skeletons rock!

I used to play Diablo2, kinda the way Stiven has it Anyway, it only worked on single play. I tried fixing it to work on multi as well, but then it just refused to run properly and even reinstalls didn't help 
And I always wondered if the auras worked on a Necromancer's minions. If so, then why doesn't anyone ever mention necro-paladin combos?
(the necromancer was my favourite too  )

Well, if it's TCP/IP, I'll play. (I actually have a legal copy, I just don't like playing with people who I'm not at least vaguely familiar with).
I've got an ~70th mauler druid, an ~25th summoner necro, and an ~25th lightning sorceress. If we're starting from scratch, I'll be just about anything everybody wants me to. I'll even be a paladin to support the Consis lagmancer.

diablo 2 is to repetive for me. after you have finished the game once you either start making "runs" in certain areas to find items or make a new charecter and go to the same storyline.. over.... and over... and over... again. the game is fun if you play with every charecter through the game once, but after that it just gets boring
