I didn't mean upgrade harpies week one. I won't do it until much later depending on resources and the map. Even the un-upgraded harpies I don't usually buy very many. I spend my gold on better creatures and carry just enough harpies to use for dancing - usually about 3-5 of them should last for a while.

I always play with 130% difficulty, which means I get approzimately 15000 in the first day. I believe it's very useful to do Town Hall on the first day because it gives you additional 500 gold a day. If I was not doing it, then I would be out of money by the second week.
However, I'm not very sure if it is wise to start going for the capitol straight after finishing Town Hall. It requires Marketplace, Mage Guild 1 and Blacksmith. So, three days would be wasted. Therefore, I usually start doing the dwellings after Town Hall and if I am lucky and there is enough wood on the map, I may even get a Castle by the seventh day.
On the other hand, that makes me quite passive, because I don't have much gold and I just stay in the town and wait. Most of the times I'm just defending rather than attacking. I am quite sure the style suits for the town, because I'm playing with Fortress.

I play on 130% too, and I'd say that it is totally map-dependant which day I build town hall on. On maps on which there are few resources, on the first day...

The only time I build day one town hall is if ALL of the following conditions are met:
1) knowledge of the map/template along with what my scouts see tell me there are no critical blocks that need a stronger army to clear
2) my scouts have plenty to keep them busy
3) there are a lot of power-ups near near town for my main to visit
4) it's a town that has an "extra" build day
5) my gut feeling says it's ok and I happen to be in the mood for doing something different
Bottom line is that I very rarely build day one town hall. Hmmm, I'd guess less than 1/100 games.

I never build the Townhall D1.
I play SP at 200%, and if I'm lucky to gather 2.500 D1 I buy a second hero D1

i'm playing the shadow of death campaign at impossible difficulty - that means 0 starting resources. this time around, i have taken people's advice on here about delaying money buildings. i am having far more success with this strategy than i did the first time i played through the campaign, where i went for money buildings.
HOWEVER, i have found that on the earlier levels of the campaign, you pretty much have to build a town hall if you can. without it, you're basically sitting around twiddling your thumbs the first week because you have no money, and thus no army. the later levels of the campaign, the town hall doesn't matter, since your heroes retain their levels, and spells like implosion, chain lightning, meteor shower, and mass slow pretty much make any combat with the mobs a walk in the park. hence you can secure the treasure chests and mines that get you the resources you need to fund your armies.
in those later levels, its better to hire some heroes as transports to chain troops with, as well as dwellings. the extra units come in handy when the computer comes in with their huge hordes. i can buy the dwellings, and even if i can't afford all the dwelling creatures initially, i can eventually.

No matter which town I play, I always build in the following order:
Day 1: Town Hall. If, however, im playing with a Might town, I build a mage guild.
Day 2: Mage Guild. If I already have it because im playing Might town, then its Town Hall.
Day 3-7: Creature dwellings. If I canīt get a new creature dwelling, I make a Citadel.
I play always on Normal difficulty against computers (because I dont yet have an Internet connection at home...), and this tactic actually works for me(especially when playing Inferno)

I usually build a creature dwelling first turn unless the first 2 levels are already built, then town hall.

Hmm... Try to play 200%. There is no problem what to build in 1st day. The most often answer is... nothing. Just wait and walk on the map to have 2500 gold. Then I can build Town Hall. Mostly it is in 2nd day, but of course it depends on the map.

Hmm.. try to play 130% ... online, like against real opponents.. coz frankly, against the CPU it matters not what you build - even if you do go town - city - capitol first - with no creatures : ) there is only one reason to go town hall - only if there could be nothing else done.

then I starting to build creature dwelling and mage guild 2... Just make sure you have enough money and you can get creatures in maximum quantity...
This (but correction that Capitol is day 1 week 2) since I exclusively play against AI and usually random maps anymore. If I were playing against online players then different strategies would apply of course but against the AI there is no good reason not to build town hall on day one. It is best IMO to build every money making structure as soon as they become available because otherwise you are just giving money away. Also I don't play any map smaller than 'Large' anymore.

The point is that unless you play with necromancers or with diplomacy allowed, creatures are much more difficult to get than the money. By building money stuff, you lose some of creatures, by building creature stuff you lose some money. But there are much more banks that give you money, chests, piles of gold, or even different towns or gold mines than things that give you units. So creatures are more scarce than money...

Solid point which I do not contest. And if I were playing multiplayer or jacking the difficulty to %200 or some such then I would think this way as well. But as I play casually against the AI now days and rarely play at more than %140 (or whatever the one after 120% is), it does not matter and some economical part of me won't allow me to give money away by waiting to build the money making structures. Trust me that I know the value of Diplomacy but I would still prefer necromancy for various reasons; such as being able to raise 65% of defeated enemies as skeleton warriors or liches if I get the cloak and the fact that necromancy always works whereas diplomacy is only very reliable after you have a massive army and expert skill.
