With regards to the Tribunal Threads, I decided when those threads were started that I would not "moderate" those topics.

I do agree that Romy is one of our funniest posters, and I've had many a smile thanks to her <~~ look there's one now!

But I haven't given any QP in those threads, and I'm going to hold to that. Hope you guys understand

I suppose a new thread, or there is always the option to just IM Djive, Valeriy or myself.

As the CoC says - "Any mention of money 'schemes' will be removed". Our new "member" posted an ad in Comic Book Club thread. I know this guy from another site and suggest a mod deals with those posts as soon as possible.

Don't get me started about him playing Heroes!

Anyways, I don't usually give out QP's for lengthy posts so perhaps you'd care to refine your resonning and give input for this?

Which thread are you looking in?

Adios Amigos

I’m leaving the community. I’ve found myself over a long time now, just mechanically checking the forums, without stumbling upon hardly anything I find interesting. I don’t want to leave HC with a taste of bitterness, so I’ll refrain from much critical/cynical comment that I would otherwise be quite happy to contribute.
HC has been, I could safely say, a stage of my life. It was the first internet forum for me to participate in (and most involving as well). The experience to share something on an international level was truly unique, and the experience to share that with so many wonderful individuals that were (are) here was really more than I bargained for. Many of you beautiful people, I’d really like we’d remain in contact, as I have your e-mails and MSN accounts (meh, the thing with the MSN and me involves the domestic net providers, the cruel capitalist laws of liberal market and a big deal of RL, but will do. Eventually.). For all this, I cannot really thank Valery more, for creating and maintaining such a place.
But as in the wise words of the great mage of the land, “this is private property that runs according to the owner’s definitions of what the rules are and everyone is encouraged to inhabit alternative places which fits closest to their preferences.” Indeed, I don’t think HC meets my preferences anymore; not since the policy led by few guys on top managed to drive away many of the people I found interesting and populate the forum with children (which are quite nice kids, don’t get me wrong); not since it began to morph into this shell protected cocoon, where inexperienced mods censure dangerous offences such as “showing smart”. I wont allow anyone to put (or take away, whatever) words in my mouth even on the rare occasions here when I feel inspired.
Again, thank you for your time. You’ve been most pleasant company.

Svarog --

I want to make a suggestion.  It is probable that HC, like any other social organism, is going through a slow phase and that things will pick up again sometime soon.

Why don't you pop in occasionaly and see what's up.  You might see that another active phase is rising and then you will be more interested in what's going on.

In other words, go dormant, but not extinct.

In the meantime, I will try to dig up your last e-mail and get back with you.  Sorry it's taking me so long!

Since you took a stab at me, let me at least defend myself.
inexperienced? yes, quite.
But still, if I find what you say to be insulting or offencive, I will edit it out, since you clearly won't. I asked you to edit, I had long chats with you on email. I patiently waited to see if you would change. Nothing changed. I was left with little choice. I made you a deal: you stop posting offencive material and I stop editing your posts.

All I want is HC to have a friendly atmosphere and it's all too easy to get into a debate and start taking stabs at the other person. Other Side is bad for this and I am sick of it. If any of you can't control yourself while debating, then don't. Otherwise, debate in a respectful manner. I don't think it's too much to ask.

I feel sad that you have left, because I did indeed like to read most of what you wrote. I hope we will have the chance to meet again on better terms.

Here's hoping you are still around to read this.

First of all, I saw this coming but thought you wouldn't give up without a fight. After all, Che didn't!

Seriously though, now I'm sorry I went to the army at the same time you registered here.

I will not write another essay "What HC means to me" now. This post sums most of it.

What was HC for you, though? Take a look at your threads and bonuses. I admire the time and effort put into those, but can't help wondering why. "International level"...? LOL By the way, how many stars did you get - 16?!

Whatever it was, you have obviously outgrown it.

It seems to me that adult forum thingie you and IYY proposed could have been the perfect solution. I understand it was just a silly idea, but a good one nevertheless. Some other forums do have such "secret" boards for the chosen few. Being 28, I admit I feel awkward among the new kids on the block. It's not their fault, though.

However, I still come around to chat about the greatest sandbox I could wish for... but am logged in to five other forums at the same time (so sue me ).

So, are you sure the freedom of speech is the only thing you lost?

Oh, and why have you posted this in the Other Side? *hint, hint*

As for Val's line, I agree it was as needless as it was true (or vice versa ).

But if you had already taken it all so seriously (don't forget we are talking about a forum dedicated to a computer game, after all!), why didn't you do something about it? (See where this is going...? )

Finally, you could have easily been a mod, and a good one at that. I know, I know... but still: if you want to change people, don't be an outlaw.

[blah blah]As someone who has always been part of the system, I think it can be changed only from within. [/blah blah]

Finally, here's a poem for you. The translation needs polishing, but you'll get it.

***

Superman has retired
he's lame and his back hurts
his arms are always up
that's a professional deformation
from so many flights

he's finally learned the evil is invincible
he cannot recall the moment he came down
from the silver screen to the real world
anyway, he's a man of flesh and blood
the touch is real, the pain is unbearable
he walks the streets like other people
he's got no power whatsoever

now it's not important anymore
but he's become a mortal because of love
his wife is dead
they got two kids, two Superjuniors
he can often see them flying in the sky like comets
facing the danger bravely

in his old days he's reading Marx and Lenin
he's realized liberal democracy is crap
and he knows Marx foresaw globalization
still, he is alone in his beliefs
just like before when he was a movie hero

Superman has retired
the cleaning lady washes his laundry
he lives poor in a small apartment
on Sunday he sits on the bench in the park
reading daily papers and feeding pigeons
with old bread

I Think I Should Say:

Svarog has left but he is not gone from my mind. As much as I disagreed with many of things he said, I cannot ignore the deep impact he has had on my thoughts. There are many people who come and go at Heroes Community but only one will ever have affected in such a way. He was a unique individual (so the elite and wise democratic capitalist guru says) and I found him to be a most significant contributor of meaningful conversation amid a sea of bland, and at times shallow, dull wittedness.

Fare thee well my friend. May you have peace in your artisan's approach to some of life's most intriguing mysteries. Fare thee well my Heroes Community acquaintance; my enemy; my special friend. Fare thee well . . .

Negative argumentation

Hello all fellow Other Siders

Other Side has long been a place for harsh debates. Tempers flare and comments are made that affect HC in a negative way. I've noticed for a long time that negative attitudes provoke more negative attitudes and that things usually go out of control and go to far.

Well, this is over.

As you may have noticed, I have taken it upon myself to tolerate very little negative behavior in Other Side. I will not hesitate to tell someone to stop posting with negative conduct and to hold my end of my values.

I beleive respect is lacking in Other Side, respect towards other's ideas, backgrounds, culture and views. And this really doesn't sit well with me.

That being said, I require your help and comments to advise me if I am going to far or if I'm doing something that no one agrees with. I would like this to be an ongoing process, so if you ever notice I am going to far with a user, please do discuss it with me. I would really like your feedback concerning this issue. You can either reach me on IM, on email or even post it here for everyone to see, I will not be insulted. I favor open communication.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Conan.

I do have feedback on recent developments, thanks for asking.

I received about a dozen robot notifications in a thread I am invested in (presidential campaign 2008) only to find most of December 8's dialogue completely wiped out.

I don't know what all is missing but I want you to know that The Gootch and I talk regularly on the phone and he relayed to me the nature of his post, which is one of those missing.  Far as I understand it, it was merely one introducing dkolb and Wolfman.

Conan, the nature of political discussion -- if it is to have any value at all -- presumes a degree of adversity.  Sarcasm can serve a purpose and does not always mean personal disrespect.  Using The Gootch as an example, anyone who has not figured out that most of his posts are a caricature of a bully, or who takes his online persona seriously at all, simply is NOT paying attention, because he does not take it seriously. In fact he's expressly stated that The Gootch is a real jerk and should be taken as such. That's exactly the genius behind it.

If free expression is suppressed to the degree I think you are suppressing it based on this example, you can almost count on further loss of your most frequent posters.  Imposing your subjective judgment of what's acceptable and what's not to this degree is disturbing and frustrating, not only for those whose posts are being wiped out, but also for those who never even got the chance to read them.

In other words, yes.  I think you are going too far.  Way too far.  Unless people are outright violating the CoC and/or others are making numerous complaints to you about someone, then I don't think you have any business censoring their posts.  And if CoC violation is the case, then give warnings or impose penalties and let people discuss the propriety issue.  If you're worried about the interruption of the flow in a thread that results, then confine all discussion about penalties to a penalty thread.

But let conversation happen.  Don't just wipe out wholesale sections of it like this.

Once again, thank you for soliciting opinions about this.  I know you are trying to do the right thing.
