They were thinking of Robocop before I did... that griffin doesn't seem to have eye openings in the armor, or maybe he's fitted with a Westinghouse radar? and some missiles? all we need is a turbojet up his *** and a pilot in a cockpit on his back.
And in one of the screenshots, is that a nightmare? I knew that drawing a horse is the cornerstone for someone who wants to learn how to draw, I guess they couldn't do it... that pile of red flames can pass as anything.
And... does the angel ever move his wings? In all the screenshots they stay put. Maybe he's a buddhist and he levitates and doesn't need wings.
And... I'll be back later with more... stay tuned.

If you look very closely (about 10cm from the monitor), you'll notice a slight movement with the wings.

Ok, time for comments...
Many shiny objects around, with glowing auras around them. Personaly, I think its a nice addition, although the huge circle around the heroes kind of makes them look like in the middle of some satanic ritual.
The upg. griffin is absolutely horrible. Looks like a space cockpit; u've got my support on that, popescu.
Notice the nice weather effects on that battle screen. Also notice that now heroes have a serf for carrying that flag during the battle. That maybe indicates that they have an active role on the battle field.
Hero casting the spell (looks like Prayer) - an amazing effect.
Now, the town screens. I must say, they look astonishing. Its an excellent trick they did with that big castle. Although that town certainly doesnt look like 3d, its two pics from diff viewpoints tend to show that some kind of rotation will be possible.
Cerberus is too fleshy imo. Doesnt look like a dog, and the heads ar etoo big, but i guess it will look better on the battle field.
Now the Devil (i assume) - looks awesome, athough the style is too beastial for the elegance of the Satan, like we had in H3. But still, a beautiful creature, even though i'd much prefer (hope) it wasnt the Devil.
All in all - the biggest disappointment - the griffin!

I cannot understand the part with returning to Heroes3 style? Except for the probable number of creature in an alignment (7), is there any other resemblance?
Not to mention the difference between the angels & devils of H3 versus H5. nival has no idea what an angel should look like. They browsed on japanese sites and found a stupid model, probably. And in the case of the devil, they just watched LOTR. They show an utterly impressive lack of imagination. By upgrade they understand more armor!!! All the inferno creatures are cartoonish and stupid. It's a wonder they managed not to destroy part of the human creatures. But if we are to extrapolate, 75% of all creatures stink.
The town is one step away from stinking too, because I can hardly see any functionality in it. Just hundreds of houses: am I supposed to knock at all doors to find which one is the dwelling?

I'm pretty sure the dwellings are not there yet.
And dont talk about lack of imagination. What do you expect from them - create blind plated griffins, wormlike cerberi? Thats what u get when u leave up to animators to use imagination. Why dont they just copy a verified model. U cant invent anything new, only need to combine what is already available.

The Disciples 2 artists did a good job of turning every cliche into a unique creature.
Anyway, I'm with Vlad: the creature graphics suck big time.

I may not be happy with the whole design, but it's not THAT bad either..
As far as the town goes, look a little closer -
the big statue of a man with a sword is most likely the grail.
The dome with the angel statue is prolyl the angel recruiting bulding.
The cathedral next to it is prolly for crusaiders.
Teh three tall towers are the amge guild, and the large tower bulding on the outer wall is prolyl for swordsman.

interesting, the town screenshots seem to introduce another graphics style to the game. so it totals about three or four now
the town screen looks like a combination of maybe aoe like color scheme (havn't played aoe for years, so i can be mistaken) and the castle shape and proportions that could from about 1500 a.d., except maybe even a bit more exagerated as fits the fantasy style.
the glowing ring around the feet of the inferno hero is extremely useful, to me it's the only identifyable detail in the whole creature. when i am looking for this creature, i look for the glowing ring. everything else generalizes to the shape of a result of stomach disorder (the more solid one).
if i don't say anything bad about the bigfooted style this time, then imho the cerberus looks better than ever with it's largeish heads. i mean, really, i.e. not sarcastically, i think those rows of teeth make the cerberus look more appropriate. the way the three necks are connected to the body seems awkward, couldn't it have been just a split in spine or something? now it looks as if they had a one-headed dog model and attached two more cutoff heads and smoothed the surface a bit. and wasn't the cerberus supposed to be black?
btw, bit less extreme knight, but if i saw it in homm i wouldn't notice much difference.

If I start again criticizing you will say that I don't miss any oportunity. But I cannot refrain, so: I would have liked less muscles and darker color. And maybe it should be a little taller, it looks like a lizard, don't know why.

The environments look beautiful and look true to the Heroes series.
The character models however look wildly different and quite out of place in the very realistic looking environments. Not that merging anime/manga style characters into more real environments is impossible, look at Legend of Zelda the Twilight Princess those graphics look great combing realistic environments with pseudo real/anime characters. But here it looks like a tacky, cut paste job.
Having said all that there are some good things about the new character design. Angels look mysterious and less generic than they did in the past but other games have made angels mysterious yet powerful in a more real sense (look at Tyrael in the Diablo 2 cutscenes very cool angel design). I wasn't a huge fan of HOMM4's graphics more because of the choppy animation that the character design but that wasn't what spoilt the game for me, the terrible gameplay did that.
If HOMM5 gets the gameplay right than I will forgive the character design without doubt. Regardless of our feelings for this new manga style I feel it is something where just going to have to endure like it or not, most likely it is Ubisoft's major strategy to reach out to more consumer of Eastern origin probably.

E3 Screenshots
These screenshots from E3 are a slight development from the batch of four seen not too long ago. They still show the same environments, but there are also a few different things, such as the long-awaited town screenshot. And, along with the movies and the trailer, a few new elements of the game reveal themselves.
Nival seem to have an obsession with beams of light emanate for just about every possible adventure map object or treasure. I'm not really sure what this achieves apart from brightening up the map, but in my opinion is unrealistic and, if anything, rids the game somewhat of the mature fantasy world Ubisoft had planned. (Best illustrated in Screenshot 1)
The detail, is very good, and there seems to be a lot more movement in the game now, and it is not just a hero interacting with the landscape; but there are farmers, peasants, and other people of the land who give the game life.
In screenshot 2 we can see the upgraded succubus creature guarding some treasure. Not particularly interesting, but it will be to see if the creatures actually move towards you and roamlife Heroes IV. Also, the precision placement of trees and obstacles and such makes me wonder how an intraversable section of the map will be determined.
The armoured Griffin continues by contempt for this noble's creature's appearance in Heroes V. I'm not sure where blue armour are 'tassles' are made, but a fully-armoured creature looks incongruous with the rest of the Heroes Universe, even if it is in the Human town. I dug up this picture, and you tell me if you think had some sort of an influence on this Armour Griffin. I certainly think so.
We also see a Monk or religious man, who, in my opinion, looks excellent. The ankh he is holding is a nice touch. (We also see the Angel actually has feet ) The ankh seems to be a common theme among the Haven creatures (as it has been in the Heroes series), with the Angel's sword bearing a resemblance, and a depiction of it on the hero's shield.
The town is very nice, but perhaps a little bland compared with everything else we've seen. I hope they employ some colour variation. (The town in the Gamespot movies has a nice colour scheme). The towers on the right are reminiscent of the Tower town in Heroes III. As people have mentioned, it seems like there is a grail structure in the background, and it is also a good touch to see that there will be more houses built around the castle as it is developed. I very much like the layout of the town, with an outer and an inner wall, and the castle in the centre, (I remember having a discussion on this sort of idea a while back) it should make for very interesting sieges. The mere size of the castles makes me wonder how big the map will be.
The first inferno screeshot reveals that Heroes can actually roam without being on a horse! This seems very strange, as one would think horses aren't hard to come by, and it would be interesting to know how he actually lost it! But, I can see some repercussions, such as moving shorter distances, etc. The cerberus looks peculiar, but its (external!) creature dwelling and the landscape look superb.
Again we see this inferno hero in the 8th screenshot, dwarfing the swordsman who looks like he is protecting a gold mine. The question I ask is, does the gold mine come with the hill (like Heroes II) or is it a separate attachment (Heroes IV). There is also an odd mix of lush vegetation and volcanic terrain, as well as a mysterious ring of fire behind the hero.
In the final screenshot, we see the Angel against a Devil (which is confirmed) and its oversized feet, while the Armour Griffin moves about inconspicuously in the background. I cannot make out the Devil's face, but it is wearing the same spears on its back as the hero was in the previous screenshot. An interesting note is also the size of the devil, and the distance the Armour Griffin is away from the combat, giving us an indication of the size of the battlefield.
As an interesting side - note, it appears as though Ubisoft and Nival have taken on board an idea sent by the Heroes Community! We have made an impact! The idea, Tracks on the Ground, was concocted by a member names Wizz back in 2001, and idea for Heroes IV, and only now has it been picked up. (It was idea Djive and I sent to Ubisoft last year.) Read it here: url=http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=2684]Tracks on the Ground[/url]

Quote: the style had a strong touch of 'medieval monastery woodcuts' (as somebody said and imho hit the very point)
Gerdash, I've just found this board again after 2 years, and saw that.... were you referring to that post ?
http://www.heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=7838&pagenumber=1
I'd love to hear that my post has been remembered for 2 years !!
As I "warned", it's almost impossible to make 3D creatures look 'right' for a HOMM game... today. With this in mind, I think the graphists have done a quite good job. IMO, full pixel-by-pixel 2D would have been best (see link above), but that's the kind of wisdom one shouldn't expect anymore from a games designer in 2005. Given that it would be 3D, I think things could have been much worse. Actually I'm quite relieved when I see many of the creatures. In particular, the knight, marksman, spadassin and devil look quite good (for 3D models). Still, I regret my good old crusader from HOMM2, I never saw a creature with a greater feeling of 'strength' given its size.
But there's more than the creatures to HOMM5 : there's the landscape and the city view, they're beautiful. After all, most of the time is spent on the adventure map, so I think this game will be visually pleasant. But that's just a hope!
