Best Fifth Level Creature...

The fifth level might be the best level of the game, many good choices so who do you like best?

I'm going to have to go with the Mighty Gorgons, their special makes them the ultimate giant killer.  Good health and no one wants to mess with them.  Minotaurs & Dendroids were a close second for me both very handy units, but the death stare rocks the house!

Ah pity the foo' who gets death stared! Ah do!
A decent tacticain never worries about this; he takes out MGs with his low level troops.  Without Death Stare, what is the Mighty Gorgon but an expensive unit tat is slightly abouve average for a level 5?  My vote goes to Minotaur because of the good damage and the constant good morale which makes them great mixers.  Try them in a Necropolis in place of Walking Dead.

Indeed Mighty Gorgons rulez

Indeed Old Timer I would agree the might Gorgon is the best fifth level creature with the death stare n all. I actually avoid fighting them with my good army when i pass them on the map despite the fact I could probably win. Its just i hate it when that death stare kicks in! hehe

Oh, here comes lv5, an interesting lv.

Best: MG and MK (well, they both somewhat look like cow, maybe they are relatives and so don¡¦t mind share the trophy.  Btw, minotaur will kill gorgon (not MG) at no time.

Great: Thunderbird (my personal favorite, usually the prologue of my Stronghold massacre), dendroid soldier (another mid-lv dragon slayer, another unit u never want to touch besides MG), power lich

Good: master genie (hey, use them wisely, they are not designed for fighting)

Average: Pit lord (it¡¦s not your fault, you are just in the wrong league)

Poor: zealot

Suck: earth/magma elemental (what the heck are u guys doing here ?)

Thunderbirds, they're fast, hard hitters and you get them early.
Which would I most like to have a big stack of?  Well, either form of ugly cows (interesting that 2 of the 5th levels are basically bovine.  I wonder if that says anything about 3DO's psychiatric conditions?)

Cows, Bulls, Birds...

Thunderbirs are fast, easy to get, deal damage and can take punishment and even fly but still cannot beat the two cow like creatures.

Minotaur Kings or "The Boys" as we call them. They are the most perfect normal ground unit. They can handle damage and can handle they axe. What they lack is specialty and speed but that would be maybe too much to ask.

Still I would pick Mighty Gorgons as they are serial 7th level unit killers. Can't beat that. You can do miracles just with two weeks production of MGs. That is amazing. Have killed group of angels with just few MGs.

The best - Mighty Gorgon, duh! (death stare, best health, good damage)
Great - Minotaur King (in some ways more useful than Manticores), Dendroid Soldier (tough, make excellent guards for Elves), Thunderbird (fighting one is a shocking experience )
Worthwhile - Power Lich (insane range attacker but not very tough), Pit Lord (to make use of Familiars once they've been fried), Master Genie (lots o' fun on Magic Plains )
Bad - Zealot (so little health that they do nothing but take hits from your opponent's spells)
The worst - Magma Elemental (maybe on par with the Horned Demon, an average 4th level at best)

MG's

Mighty Gorgons are easily the best creature of the 5th level. They can even beat Cyclops from the stronghold town which is a level6.
But even without the death stare it is the best on a one-on one.

My Ratings:

1st: MG
2nd: T-Bird
3rd: MKing
4th: DS
5th: PL
6th: MasGen
7th: Z
8th: PitF

I think these are pretty close to what other people will say.

In my opinion

Mighty Gorgons are the best but Minotaur Kings and Thunderbirds don't come far behind. Also dendroids are a really interesting troop.

hehe guys

i see you don't like magma elements at all. well let me tell you something - a good strategy is to take advantage of everything you have available. if you get the hero that gives them +5 to damage you will see what they can do.
also my favourites in this are the dendroid guards. use them wisely cause they are tough even they are slow. great damage , great hit points number and also great special ability . best against flying creatures and guess what . you can use them to protect your shooters.

Coldfyrius you're wrong.  The bulls are stout.  70 hit points goes a long way towards them staying in combat.  2nd are the T-birds.  Then the Minotaur Kings(not enough hit points).  Ironically, the unit with the 2nd highest hit points, the Dendroid whatever, sucks to high heaven.  If I ever get stuck with Rampart I just reboot.

Mighty Gorgs?!

Come on you guys! The Mighty Gorgs aren't all that! Sure they've got lots of hitpoints, but who on earth (or erathia for that matter) would allow a Mighty Gorgon anywhere near their stack of Level 7s?!

The fact that most smart players won't go toe to toe with the fortress cows completely negates their death stare specialty. And the fact that they are considered a crux unit for the slow fortress means that a mighty gorgon is always painted a bigger target than the Hydras. Gorgons are always the first units to go.

Minotaurs on the other hand are less of a threat than the shooters and dragons. You can keep minotaurs well out of the fray until the latter stages of a battle quite easily and then set them loose on what's left of the enemy.

Plain and simple, Minotaurs are quicker, their morale is a killer (far more of a killer than a 10% chance of death stare) and their attack and damage scores will knock a gorgon's horns out of it's head. Ever had expert leadership with Minotaur Kings? Morale morale morale attack attack attack every damn round justabouts! I'd rather have a Minotaur king that has very good chances of two strikes per round than a Mighty Gorgon with a ten percent chance of deathstare on a harpy hag.

LOL And BESIDES! Those bloody Gorgon cow things are just plain ugly!!!

*smile*

And the simple fact that the Cows o' Doom get targeted BEFORE the hydras goes a long way towards sustaining their claim to best 5th level unit. No other 5th level unit gets the amount of tactical thought given to avoiding/countering it that MGs do.

And don't forget, it's not 10% for the stack ..it's 10% for every 10 MGs. Smart Fortress players split their stacks for maximum effect. And use 'wait' a lot to get a chance to use them.

Having said that, for mixed armies, MKs can't be beat. The always positive morale means they'll always get a chance to attack, even if all other units are sulking, so they come  good second to MGs. Possibly higher, if you're playing Necro, as it lets you shove the walking dead into the skelton converter where they belong.

Sure, one Mighty Gorgon gets a 10% chance of death stare. But 6 (one week's worth) get a 47% chance (each one has a 10% chance, to a max of 1 per 10 gorgons). 12 get a 72% chance at 1 or more and a 34% shot at 2. Plus it's pretty hard to completely avoid the MGs with your level 7s if you have Adv/Exp Haste or Teleport. With only one or two, or against weaker creatures, Minotaur Kings are better. But against the big guys with more than a week's worth of them I'll take the Gorgons any time (except against Necro, whose top troops are immune to the stare).
