MG all the way
Even without their special MG will beat any other level 5 one on one (yes, Shae, it beats MK). Their special makes them so much better that they are favorite for the overall best unit, not just level 5. Their drawbacks are low speed, and the fact that they are 2-hex unit (2 many big walkers in fortress).
Shae:
Even the best player in the world cannot avoid MG simply because there are spells that can make this impossible - like teleport and haste. How about clone and resurrection - try killing these beasts over and over again. You cannot hide your level 7, level 6, AND level 5 from them at the same time. If you try to gang up on them to bring them down you give the hydras a mutiple target to attack. And unlike Vampire Lords, MG can stand a lot of beating. No other unit can mess up your tactics more than MG can.
MK are my second favorite. Their morale is negated by the spirit of opression tho, and you can have this artifact more often than not.

With Clone Resurrection and Teleport all being 4th level spells (I think), sos, it's no wonder that the Fortress can only build to level 3 in a mage guild. In order to acquire those spells, you need a certain rolling of the luck dice and if there are no other towns on the map apart from yours and your opponents, then you're going to have to rely upon a scroll in order to get these spells or some other 'rare event'.
Yes, if I had resurrection and you didn't have the negate morale artifact, Minotaurs would be hard to kill too. But I see your point, I've actually started to develop a very healthy respect for Gorgons and their death stare skill. It's far more useful than most other special skills I've come across, although the absence of the teleport spell is realy starting to tick me off!

Not to forget that the more Migty Muus u have, the bigger chance of death stare there is, and the more units go down.
Yhat just plain rules in topias for instance, or strong borderguards.
One very usefull spell with Muus, are actually haste
U just gotta catch ur opponent every where else but in his or ur castle.
Hmmm guess my only contribution to this thread is that Fortress is a vastly underestimated town, with recanters they are allmost unbeatable
And yeah I dont underestimate Min Kings, but most good players pick them out with a spell, concentrating on them Blackies with ur units. Yeah they are great but also killed fairly fast if u have some good damage dealing spells.
Dendroid guards on the other hand is the forgotten unit.
I would just love to see my opponents face those time I have withheld my haste for just the right moment, and then catching his archies with my dendroids, just to gangbang them poor archies afterwards with the rest of my units

Why should ya take em with ya when 5 chaoshydras and 6 drag flys can take BIGGEST topia with no Problems .

No man 3 are not enuff if u take 3 with u the dragons take ya for lunch because they attack em . have tried all Hydra/Utopia combos and 3 is definatly not enuff. u would die in the smallest utopia around .

Won't tell ya how and when to do it with 3 chaos hydras.If u want to belive 3 are not enough then it's your problem. Also 3 archengels, 3 archdevils and a few of some low lower level units are enough.

No man sorry to tell ya but thats imposible with 5 flys and 3 chaos u gonna die. (..ok maybe not if urs stats like 30,30,30,30 and kickass spells).
with just low level spells and average pre-topia-stats its impossible.
i wait for the day that u gonna show me how to clear a 5 black topia on cursed grounds with 3 archdevils and 6 imps ....I want that trainer j.k

Mads cows rule!!
Mighty gorgons... I love them. Sturdy, heavy and as deadly as their stare. Liches? No, thank you, bulls for me. Mino kings are great too but I'd get 20 MG instead of 20 Mino Kings any time. Master Genies are quick and sometimes they cast cool spells but they are too weak otherwise.
This is my choice:
MG-Mino lords- Dendriods- Rocs- Liches- Pit lords- Master genies- Zealots- Magma Elementals

first off, teleport is a level 3 spell. Always was since HOMM1.
creature comparison:
Magma Elemental, Minotaur, or Pit Fiend?
Magma Elemental:
6-10 dam. (11-15) if specialty plainswalker
40 HP
speed 6
500 gold
Minotaur:
12-20 dam.
50 HP
speed 6
500 gold
Pit Fiend:
13-17 dam.
45 HP
speed 6
500 gold
conclusion: even with specialty plainswalker, the magma elemental is less than par for 5th level.
my choices in order:
1- Mighty Gorgon (600)
2- Thunderbird (700)
3- Pit Lord (700) <--- ONLY because of the demon specialty ... to build a HUUUUUUUGE army of demons.
4- Minotaur King (575)
5- Master Genies (600)

1. Mighty Gorgons. Ever seen clone casted on huge herd of MGs and then those clones attack your 7th level creature?
Clone is equally nasty spell with both MGs and Arch Angels. I bet you don`t like to see clones cast on Hydras either, especially as there are no retalition against them. And try to attrition those MGs down when they have counterstrike on them. Luckily Fortress hero have to conquer town with atleast 4th level mage guild.
2-3. Thunderbirds. Good hitpoinst, nasty special and they are the fastest troops of Stronghold (and therefore (I checked that word from dictionary, it does exists) quite important troop to Stronghold).
2-3. Minotaur Kings. Good damage value, morale and above average speed.
4. Denroid Soldiers. 8 per week, nasty special, good health.
5. Power Liches. Death Cloud and among the best shooters in game.
6-7. Pit Lords. Good damage value and good special.
6-7. Master Genies. Good damage value, fast and casts spell. I wouldn`t waste their attack in tough battle by casting spell with `em. Although they won`t have much HP they does damage alot.
8. Zealot. Shooter and no melee penalty.
9. Magma Elemental. Hmmm?
By the way wiggy, normal minotaurs have only 45 hp.

Yeah, let's see that Minotaur try to beat a Gorgon. The Minotaur averages 16 damage per hit, to kill the Gorgon in 5. The Gorgon - 13.44 damage per hit, to kill the Minotaur in 4. Sorry, Gorgon wins. And a Mighty Gorgon will kick the Minotaur King's *** any day.

The Thieves' Guild is ... shall we say, not the most reliable source for basing "most powerful creature" comparisons?
BTW, nothing is better than having a Fortress army with 27 MGs and getting 28 more to join you. Not only do you not have to risk losing several Hydras to the ever-annoying Stare of Doom, you get to use them to inflict an extra 2 or 3 kills at once with your Gorgons' death stare.

2nd Thunder Bird great defense & offense fast fliers
3rd Power Liches their death cloud is powerful & hits all living things
4th Master Genie They come in handy for their random spells
5th Dendroid Soldier can get a bunch of them & bind even the most powerfullest creature
6th Minataur great power & hit points with no morale penalty
7th Pit Lords great power with a great ability
8th Zealots are descent shooters
9th Magma Elementals Uhhh their cool lol
