Assuming You are talking about H5, he means that You can set up the opponent Hero as usual, then switch Autocombat on for that hero as soon as combat starts in order to duel against the AI.

This is really confusing, do I have the right version?
Here's a printscreen: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/196/3v1u.jpg/
All I want to do is to play a duel against the computer, I can se that its available in multiplayer but not singelplayer.

It's not available in SP mode but he told you how to do it in MP.
When you play a regular-game you can choose "auto-combat" and the A.I. fights the fight for you..correct?
So, just pick both heroes for the Duel and play one and set the other to auto-combat in the pre-battle-phase. It is still playing against the A.I. no matter how you got there.
Btw, don't expect the Heroes to be balanced; <imo> UBI/Nival did a poor job. However, you can create your own; read the instructions in the manual about creating duel-heroes.

somehow I cant post a screenshot atm so here's a step by step guide
- Choose Multiplayer in Main Menue
- Choose Hot Seat
- Choose Duel (or 3v3 Duel)
- Choose a Hero for you (red in this case)
- Choose a Hero for opponent (that one which the AI should control) (blue)
- Start Game
- Now, if its red Heros (or creatures) turn act as usual i.e. attack, wait, cast spell, etc
- If its blue Heros (or creatures) turn (which is still under your control!) press 'Autocombat' button and the AI will take control of that Hero and its creatures until you press 'Autocombat' again!
As easy as this
If you cant find the Autocombat button:
There are 6 buttons at the bottom right of your screen:
bottom left button = Surrender
top left = Spellbook
top middle = Wait
top right = Autocombat (this is the one I'm talking about)
bottom right = Game Options
middle = Defend
I hope you understand it now even without pics

At least thats what the Patch notes say: Ubisoft Patch Notes
Just update the game and retry

A few question :
a.) how do you make patches work if you are using daemon tools and a free version of Heroes V?.
b.) how do you add new maps to such a version?.

Patches? Simple. Download the official patch from Ubisoft, but do it in order: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05 then 1.06
It's tedious, I know, but that's the way I remember doing it ~half a decade ago
You can find the site here BTW
http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=1628
EDIT: Remember to make sure to install HoMM V properly first. If you have any problems with that, ask.
Can't help you with maps though; try celestial heavens or something

Under your main TotE folder there is a Editor Doc folder with one on Pre-set editing.
if you have additional question I "might" be able to help.

Here's one: A thread on the front page of this forum (CUSTOM DUELS), everyone's talking about a 'patch' they're downloading: what's that?
Also, the duel editor in the map editor limited me to ~11 paladins, but the previously mentioned thread had this screen shot:
don't know if that img worked, first time trying it

As Fauch said, 7 stacks of 10 paladins
Combine them then split them in 4 stacks like in the picture

Stayed tuned and I'll take a look at what I can do. If there was talk about a patch I would assume it would have been about game updates. I am using TotE 3.1 so that's the end of the road anyway. iirc, the Editor needed some of the fixes in 3.1.
