What makes you think leprechauns don't want to fight? If every week some hero came stomping into my garden and mugged me for either my gold or gems, I'd damn well be pretty interested in fighting and taking it back.

Sure, in that case even my grandmother would pick up her cane and strike the first in range, but defending property is one thing and being recruited from a dwelling inside a town as a mercenary for a hero is something quite different.
Well, actually they're more of patriots than mercenaries since they actually live in that town, but still I don't see them as the fighting breed.

Well maybe after 3 whole heroes games worth of getting mugged over and over again, week after week by heroes stealing their stuff they finaly decided they weren't going to take it anymore and set out to kick some hero butt with one of the towns.

The leprechauns remain an open subject. But now I want to refer to other creatures that bother me. The pyrate is part of the same category into which falls the vampire - too modern. Since they introduced such a creature they might just as well introduce Queen Victoria as a hero.

Well as I've said before many times, and which you seem to be ignoring, you won't be able to see their faces and make out their clothing all that well when you play the game. Don't worry about how the giant inflated picture that you will never see in the game looks. Worry about how the little figure that is actually in the game looks.

You're right, in smaller size the details will disappear, but they should have not released then the big pictures.Everytime they will fight I will remember the big ones and I will see the details that can't be seen.
And what can you hide about the vampire? He will remain a man in suit, only smaller....

Don't worry, play the game for even a little bit and you will forget how the big pictures look and will too focused on the game itself to worry about how they once looked in your mind.

And the vampire will look much more medieval in a little picture cause he won't have the details that make him look victorian. They did have suits in the middle ages too, and I don't have a problem with vampires being well dressed.

I think...

...that the fan's of fantasy style will be the most dissapointed in the new vampires looks. I am one of those players that doesn't just only play HOMM because it is "just" a very good strategy game. But because I love entering in a world of fantasy (not necesary "bloody" as mentioned above) when playing and the music of the game is so apropiate to feel like that. Is one way to relax myself almost like I love hiking on the mountains just to run away from civilisation(cars,TV,polution, etc.) for some moments...and if I am going to find some guys on the top of some mountain with a portable TV (or a noisy stereo) it will
spoil my entire day. As for vampires I do not wish to see them in some stupid suit just because 3DO wants to...they should listen to Vlad because he lives in a town (to the north of mine) from the south of Transylvania and he knows better how the vampires looks like

Actualy I don't think fans of fantasy will have much reason to be disapointed. The vampire looks very much like the classic fantasy vampire. Take alook at Strahd from Ravenloft for example, one of the more classic fantasy vampires. He wears a suit much like this vampire does.

I'm glad to see that the discussion of HOMM4 vampires seems to be moving over to the vampires thread. Please allow me to inject my own personal gripe about the appearance of a heroes 4 creature here:

The Unicorn ....what were they thinking? Although I'm sure my 9 year old niece would love to have one for her Barbie collection. :::sputters off into hysterical raving for a minute::: ok ..all better now ..nothing to see here ..mooooooooooove along.

For me...

Graphics of game aren't so big issue.
Still they add nice touch if they go along with game play.

Example I think it wouldn't be so nice that game would have blood spilling everywhere if those creatures would look like cartoon dolls.

And yes some of the units look pretty hilarious.
My little pony too...

As this discussion  about vampires advances no one can convince the other one about his opinnion beeing right. So I think we should indeed move on to another faulty creature, not before my last statement: you will never convince me about the accuracy of placing a dandy vampire in a time when it was still waiting for hundreds of years to be invented by Bran Stoker.
Now, about the unicorn... yes, an excelent choice for a doll with all that hair...it is more suitable for a circus show than a combat where it's supposed to be a high level creature (unlike leprechauns and other "colorfull" fellows).

P.S. Change the vampires!

"you will never convince me about the accuracy of placing a dandy vampire in a time when it was still waiting for hundreds of years to be invented by Bran Stoker. "

Ah well that is another mistake you make. Heroes is set in an alternate universe with no relation to our own. Bran Stoker will never be born in that world and the time period it is set in, while primitive, is not the middle ages or any other earth time period. So that argument doesn't really make any sense. And anyway as I said before the vampire is done pretty in the way (or one of the ways) of the classic fantasy vampire.

"Now, about the unicorn... yes, an excelent choice for a doll with all that hair...it is more suitable for a circus show than a combat where it's supposed to be a high level creature (unlike leprechauns and other "colorfull" fellows). "

Well I suspect the unicorn will also look better when he is smaller (not that I think he looks so bad while bigger). And no matter how much hair he has, I wouldn't want a big magical horse with an enchanted spear coming out of his head charging at me.......

If you say hmm4 universe is parallel to ours, how can you define "classic" look for a vampire? This word makes sense to all of us only in our dimension! And this game should not present the creatures "as most of us think they are", because in many cases general opinion is wrong. Indeed they must look good (it is essential especially for hmm atmosphere) but they also must be feasable, realistic to a certain point, and not mere images of our minds.
And the thrill is bigger when the charging horse is impressive rather than "magic-colored".

I was more talking classic fantasy look.

"This word makes sense to all of us only in our dimension! And this game should not present the creatures "as most of us think they are", because in many cases general opinion is wrong. So your saying that heroes 4 vampires don't look anything like real vampires? I hate to break this to you, but vampires don't exist in real life, they only exist in our imaginations and in fantasy.

"And the thrill is bigger when the charging horse is impressive rather than "magic-colored". "

Well nothing wrong with the charging horse being both impressive and magic colored. But once again I'm pretty sure his colors will be much less noticable in the actual game. You get way too obsessed with how some big pictures you will never see again look.

The image of the creatures, while important, I don't think is really distorted here. The only time Heroes creatures have ever really looked scary(which I think is somewhere along the lines of what you're going for, Vlad) is Heroes III. Now, however, Heroes IV is "a celebration of old and new", making the creatures "appear more 'real' previous games" while keeping the colorfullness of Homm I and II.

I hate when you're right about me beeing obsessed with the big pictures. But that's that, I hate the way some of them look...OK, I'll wait to see the small ones, we'll talk then, but'll be too late. When a big one looks good, the small one will too... not like in other cases....I just want to be sure of it.
I was quite sure the vampires were only a fantasy, now that you've told me I'm positive! But I wonder if an ancient man would have imagined them like you do now....I know, you'll say the game is made for us, right, but the sense of reality then is lost.

Well sense you asked

The original concept of vampires was that they were just rotting corpses much like zombies that drank blood, without any of the cool powers or the bat thing or anything. The origin of the steak through the heart was when people expected a corpse of being a vampire they would dig it up, open the coffin, and hammer an iron nail through the chest. This was not to kill it, but to nail the corpse down to the coffin so it could not get up. It's also worth noting that according to legend the nail had to be iron not wood, because iron is supposed to have anti-magic properties.

This was pretty much how the vampire was until Bram Stoker wrote his famous book. Obviously the new vampire has little relation to the old, which was little more then a zombie with a different name.

So essentialy even the H3 Vampire is inspired by Stoker's vampire not the original vampire.

I agree, but perhaps we could retain the power of the "new" breed of vampires and still give them the looks of the "old" ones. I'm still against suit & shoes in the mud of the war (a clever vampire would never dress like that for a battle, he!)

You know, someone can really get a headache watching all of you argue about weather or not the vampires should be dressed up.

JUST PLAY THE FLIPPIN GAME!

I'm pretty sure the vampires could care less about what their wearing, they're just animated drawings made to make a game interesting and fun.  You all remember pong?  A little ball and two sticks to represent the paddles.  Did people care or complain? NO, they played the game, they were focused on the game.  A game is a game because of what it is about, the story that it's based around in most cases.  Sure some...well ok alot of the creatures could use a makeover but you know, what they look like will have nothing to do with how strong they are.  Look at the fire elemental from heroes 3, God they were weak.  Heaven knows looking at them, someone would think they would be strong creatures.  So what I'm trying to say is, the game could be a bunch of stick figures on the outside but their stats, levals, and abilities is what really matters.
