6. Dragon Golem- get rid of the rider and I will be happy.
7. Medusa- bring back snake-legs, it should have no legs! Horrible horrible mistake.
8. Phoenix- some definition and form would be nice for the phoenix... not just some cheap holey mesh slapped onto a poor model. The burning effect is good though
9. Ballista- get rid of the rider and I will be happy.
10. Behemoth- get rid of the stiff-haired gorilla look, it looks horrible. The old "rancor" look was good... bottom line is make it VERY FURRY! Soft and cuddly behemoth looks less like a naked ape.

A variety of male and female monsters is certainly the best. Heroes are both men and women and so should creatures be.
Also point out that the genies in Heroes 3 are female. The master genies are on the other hand male.
The riders of the pegasi are female elves so female elves already existed in heroes 3 too. Heroes 3 has just as heroes 4 a number of monsters that are female like: harpy, medusa, and nagas so I don't think this is a way of getting "female" power.
Also consider the fact that talking about sex for creatures like dragons is often futile since the image won't show which sex it is.
On the lists:
2. Trolls -> Muscles and throwing stones.
3. Improved look of elf. (Not necesarily a male look.)
5. Zombie -> Not a good move to make it female.
6 & 9. No riders for DG and Ballista.
7. Tend to agree with the medusa. The one in heroes 2&3 was overall better.
The others I don't really agree with. Behemoths look like big gorillas but that is not necessarily bad IMO.

Make
Mechanic snow dragon into Diamond dragon!
Zombie into a Ghoul
Make Behemoth into a Valkyrie
Make Wolf into Will O Wisp.
Elf into Sharpshooter
Rogue into SOMETHING DIFFERENT! LOL a Black dragon and a human in one town? The same town? LOL! I think the 3do people didn't learned their Mythology/fantasy lessons..

Some one may say, I think that the Angel or Devil should be included, but I think when it comes to those creatures they can pass. So let's keep OK and perfect designs out of this list. Is there anything that should be added?
Blaaaah!.... Angels look like a beggar with plastic wings and sword for God's sake!!! and...Devils...let's just say tat he looks like a stupid robot with a small version of Neptune's fork in his hand (these creatures look stupid and MUST be changed!)
Some of you could say ".. yes... but you don't know how they would look like when they move">the animation< ... but still the pics are horible! I don't care how the animation will be! 3DO showed lack of imagination in many creatures design!!!

Not just lack of imagination, but also a certain lack of detail that was present in Homm3.. I really want to know what happened between 3 and 4 that made the realistic rendering DROP.
The textures in 4 are very poorly done, with the skin and cloth having very little definition in comparison to Homm3 (compare the genies.. the 4 one is very simplified. Same goes with the centaur and so on) The new creatures look cartoonish because their proportions are a bit skewed, but there is just a lack of detail (check out the folds and rippling in the vampire lord's robe and then check out the very simplified tuxedo shirt on the vampire in 4)

Just because the current screenshots have creatures looking plastic and low-quality doesn't always mean they'll look that way in the final product. I've heard that sometimes a computer game company will put a faster-loading "skin" on the models of the creatures or just use low-quality versions of the creatures while they're testing and getting the bugs out of the game itself because the game will load faster with fewer polygons or whatever so they can do more with it in less time. That's why it's known as the BETA version and isn't the proper version. After the program WORKS, then they can tweak the creatures the game uses and make them look better, or even scrap the whole design of a creature and start afresh.
Personally I think the unicorns are among those that most desperately need revamping since they look like giant shetland ponies that got their manes and tails caught in a tie-dyer (aka My Little Pony, which I admittedly used to collect as a child). It's not RIGHT, they should look much more graceful, more like deer than horses, IMO, and should be surrounded by a blue-white glow like moonlight.
But that's just what I think a unicorn should look like. *shrugs*

huh.. testing quality textures? this is not a 3d-game, i don't see any reason for simpler textures than that they can be made faster.
hmm.. as far as i have heard in another thread about maranthea and venom spawn.. venom spawn must also be female..
ok, here's my top list (if you cannot see some monster here, i must have forgotten it):
1) dragon golem (the rider and the spings and pipes, etc, that make it look like mech instead of art, are out of place imho. also, gold golem is lower level but looks a lot better and more magical).
2) venom spawn (why have a slime creature at all, like the designer was bored or what. or at least it's anatomy should make some sense. green slime is imaginative, or what?).
3) phoenix (non-mythological looking shape and texture imho).
4) thunderbird (same as about phoenix texture, and in a barbarian town it's bright colors don't look barbarian-like at all).
5) bone dragon (forelegs in the middle of ribs.. who was the designer?).
6) troll (if the starved goblin that we have seen is a troll).
7) the vampire (looks great, but dressed in a modern way that would most probably be ridiculous in the homm world).
8) devil (well.. whatever.. but the trident is way too polished and shiny).
9) zombie (why the bright green color, doesn't it spoil the gray, well, now also red, atmosphere?).
10) pirate (also looks too modern).
11) centaur (does not fit in with the other barbarians with his quality spears, and i am duobtful about his haircut).
12) minotaur (the shape of his head could be a lot better, and don't tell me it's just on the large pictures, because it isn't)
13) crusader (well, it's minor problem, but the blade should not get broader towards the tip.. the other way round rather).
14) titan (looks good otherways, but i am doubtful about his helm, he is a shooter after all. and his heavy helm makes me think he is immune to the hobbit's giant-slayer ability that will probably be interpreted as david and goliath)
15) elves (should have pointy ears more clearly visible. that's one of the symbols of elves after all. could be dressed a bit better, also).
16) white tiger and mantis (too realistic).
17) wolf (would be better if it's proportions were distorted in a bit different way).
18) kraken, dragon turtle, leviathan (why are they invisible?)
========
well, actually there are many monsters that i really like
btw what would you ppl think if the monster graphics slightly resembled this kind of style (well, hor homm, probably not that extreme, but just slightly in that direction):
demon, manticore, kraken.
imho e.g. the hydra, and the satyr are good examples of the style i am trying to talk about.
at least imho it would be much better if e.g. the monk looked sth like the monk on this picture of a monk
instead of what it looks like in homm.

Why vampires?
The other day i was talking with my friend The Wolfmaster and we wonder why do you hate the vampires clothes and looks so much? Aren't vampires lookink almost like that. They live in Mansions don't they and if they have big mansions why not have better clothes?! They must be well dressed and well behaved to saduse beautiful ladies and then drink their blood!!!

Tikky, no offense, but have you read a word of this thread before posting? Please go back and read it, this subject is discussed on many pages and your question has it's answer there. But, in short, this is one more time: you live in the present, but don't expect the game to do the same; each age has it's set of clothes. No more.
Now, I'll pick on another creature: the centaur.
First, the haircut, like Gerdash also remarked suggests a gay, not a warrior haircut.
Second, the hind legs of the horse-part are VERY disproportionate, just like all horse-like creatures have.
Third, they exchanged the bow for spears; and we all know (or at least we should....) from mithology that centaurs were skilled in archery, so spears are not welcome. Well, I can also see the other side of it, so some of us won't call me short-sided: since other creatures already use the bow, for a change they will throw spears, and that's good for diversity. But remember: bad things always start small, just to grow later if allowed.

The first disagreemnt between me and Vlad
I don't know, but the Centaurs are one of my favoruite looking creature designs.
Their haircut suits their now-barbaric look (please note that also the sorceror has similar haircut). As for their archery skills, I think that the Centaurs are able to fight well with Javelins also (not spears). Back in ancient times spears were over 10 meter long(Alexanders' Phalanz used sch spears). So Centaurs weren't skillful with such spears. But in those times they had second type of spears, and nowadays we recognize those spears by the name of Javelins. Those are throwing spears. Greek heroes used this spears as arrows (well sort of). And Centaurs were able to put those Javelins into good use. HOMM4 Centaur carry also such Javelins. And he can throw them on his enemies. That's why he's holding several Javelins in his hand. And as you said that's good for diversity

I think in some sort of beta version of Homm3 the centaurs were meant to originally be ranged creatures... but I guess that changed very early on. The hairstyle does not bother me so much as the fact that it's facial features are ugly, and it's horse features are not sharp elegant and graceful... rather it looks like a plastic my little pony with little attention and definition to detail.

Yes, well...sorry I didn't make the difference between spears and javelins....of course I didn't imagine a phalanx made of centaurs...
But are we talking about centaurs or greek heroes? The mythical heroes were skilled both in javelin-throwing and archery, just as in greek-persian wars the greeks had a special detachament using javelins...But that is unconclusive with regard to centaurs. I know that the centaur who wass most famous (Chiron) was known for his archery skills.
As about the looks....I still don't like that hair...it looks like plastics, but I assume when small it would be ok.
Not the same for the horse posterior. It's terrible.

Ok, but when it comes to the weapon of choice this must be the original one, the bow (just my opinion).Or else, they just may design several centaurs with different weapons, and you would pick what you like...but that's not a good idea.

yeah, on pictures of greek pottery, i have also seen centaurs with stones and sticks, or bare hands only.
btw what was bothering me with centaurs in the barbarian town, was that the style of their graphics was very different from the style of graphics of othre barbarian creatures. maybe the fur of the horse has to be so deep brown an so shiny, but their spears are surely too high quality for a barbarian.

I was thinking about the Crusader in HOMM4 and the way he looke in HOMM1&2. I think that the new art, although not great as the HOMM1&2, is good, but it only lacks one thing. A cape. Purple cape (purple is the colour of the Haven army, right) with that yellow Lion thing on it would be really cool.
**********************************
I know that we cleared up the Vampire question, but one thing got on my mind, and I must express my thoughts.
When we analysed the Vampire we agreed upon some thing, and one of those things was that Vampires must look Noble.
Well after some thinking I disagree with this.
Why do Vampires must look Noble? We said that Dracula tended to look noble, because he must infiltrate the humans, so they can recognize him as one of them.
But we missed to analyze the core of the problem. And what is the core of the Vampire question?
Well, what in the first place is Vampire? Undead who drinks blood and live from that. Why does he need to act noble? Because he is alien in this world. There are no known vampires, and everybody fear from them. So they must decieve the humans that they are one of them, so they can attract them in their lair and suck their blood. What do we know more of this "known" vampires? They can't live in sunlight.
Well, let's look now at the HoMM vampire situation. The vampres are common in the worlds of HoMM. They come also in large numbers. They do go on open to hunt their preys. SO do they need to act nobles and to mask themeselves? No. And they also live in sunlight. The sun don't harm them. So in the worlds of HoMM we can speak of Vampire that is rather different from the Dracula version that we're familiar with.
And that's something that I want. New, imaginative, fantasy vampire. That is vampire because of his blood sucking need and undead allegiance. Because that makes Vampire. Blood sucking. Not noble acting.
Therefore he doesn't need at all to look or act Noble at all.

Well, of course nobility is not exactly a must-be in THIS game.(But, also, if the crusaders look so shiny, why wouldn't the vampire do too?). If we look back at the h3, the vampires are dusty creatures and only upgrading them to vampire lords you get....well...lords. I suppose the nobility can only increase the stats, but nobility is indeed not necessary for battle readiness. Still, if you can have them look noble than poor, why not?

Well I don't have nothing against the Noble look of the Vampire.
I just wanted to point out that the look of the HoMM4 vampire, was defended by his defenders with not so strong arguments. And that there can be Vampire in the HoMM world, without nobility.
