The Russians will never admit it, but the real reason they attacked Georgia is because Georgia was getting too close to NATO and the US and wanted to buy western Anti-Aircraft and Anti-Missile systems.
Another reason is that a major oil pipe runs through these areas.
But there was always tension between Russia and Georgia about South-Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The funny thing is that Russia attacked Chechnya at that time because they wanted to be separated from Russia, and now Russia supports South-Ossetia and Abkhazia that want to be separated from Georgia. What a two-faced Russian policy.
The Olympics is their perfect timing they also attacked Afghanistan when the Olympics started at that time.
Russia wants to be a superpower again, so they show force wherever and whenever they can, especially when it contradicts US and NATO interests (like opposing NATO plans to post Anti-Missile defensive systems in Poland, like selling advanced SA missiles to Syria and Iran, and so on
).
They know that the US and NATO wouldn't dare to attack them so the Russians act freely and embarrass the US.
What the Russians fail to understand is that the western world isn't their enemy anymore, and while trying to be a superpower all over again Russia simply sets many regions on fire and might cause another cold war.=======

I really don't follow you.
The gist of it sounds like you're pretty upset.
We are trying to keep posting in the Otherside civil. We encourage open debate, without angry words, or false statements. If you're making a statement that is opinion, it is just best that it be written as such.
People will understand you better, and respect you more if you take the time to post in a manner that shows them some respect in return.
If you have an opinion about the way the forum is moderated, or an issue with me personally - please take it to the Otherside Feedback thread where we can try to resolve it.
Making angry posts at me will likely not have the result you're hoping for.

Wrong.Russia attacked Chechenya because Chechenya wanted to be sovereign, while on the other hand Russia attacked Georgia, because Georgia attacked russian citizens in South Ossetia and Achatia.

Step to faults,Russia took its actions to protect Russians and now ossetia and abkhazia are trying to become russian territory.That is waht you call,act of liberty?And BTW,Georgia attacked(as they said) seperatists or rebels.That is the exact thing russia did to chechenya.Nice irony huh?

Please try to contain your tempers, and discuss rationally - quotes within quotes, and all this YOU said this and blablabla - really not at all productive.
The simple fact is that no one except for the decision makers can tell anyone exactly why they acted as they did. Of course from reading the news and following the situation, people can have a lot of ideas - some probably are right - but anything anyone comes up with will always be debatable.
Naturally people from different sides of an issue will obviously see things differently. For myself, looking at the situation from Canada , I naturally see things differently than someone closer - who is personally affected. That's just the natural way of things.
Seraphim, if you think things are a certain way - try to explain how and why you see them as they do. Please do try to be more clear, often it is very difficult to understand you - especially when you're upset. It might be best for you to stop and take 5 minutes to think about what you want to say before you post.
People are going to respond to you in the manner that you post, if you are angry and confrontational you will get that in return.
To those of you who disagree with his way of thinking should also try to explain to him why it is that you disagree - and offer him your reasons why. Maybe you can help him to see some things in a different light.
I swear I feel like a babysitter sometimes...Talking about important matters with people of an opposite viewpoint can be a really helpful way to gain some insights - but what is going on here is just a mess.

Its probably best only to use them when you're certain that they're universally understood.
