Well, since I am a newbie (I only play against the AI and ONLY after modifying a random generated map to landlock the AI where he can't bother me, etc.) t

There is little difference between a online game and a game vs the AI, it is basically the same. The map clearing is done the same way in Multiplayer as when you play alone. The end battles can be practised via map editor. Give yourself 2x heroes from say Tower and Inferno, give them similar numbers of units and the magic you would pick. Then face off vs yourself and see how you would react.

To do sparring matches vs yourself can teach you a lot.

The only real difference tends to be experience. For example bad players rush Capitol or don't realise the power of their units and needs to have 6x angels to kill a pack of thunderbirds.

LOL. Well I don't need 6 Angels to kill a pack of birds but something along those lines anyway ....As for rushing the Capitol, I don't see why that's a bad thing when you play the game like me (stress-free that is). I like building ALL of my buildings in the order I want. That's one of the reasons I land-lock the AI anyway, so I can freely do as I please ^_^

??? Wouldn't make much more sense to defend with dwarfs or zombies instead of harpies? Also, what's so great about the gargoyles? I never liked those fellows. They die instantly, unlike in Heroes 4 for example where they're tough to kill in early game. Oh yeah, Power Lich also?? I mean, PLs are nice-looking at the only shooter (if I;m not wrong) that has AOE damage, but their damage/attack stats are not spectacular. Oh well, to each their own I guess

You're never too young to learn my feisty friend.

"??? Wouldn't make much more sense to defend with dwarfs or zombies instead of harpies?" It would and yet not, minding the harpies can attack while defending where as the dwarves or zombies are stuck, just waiting.

"Wouldn't make much more sense to defend with dwarfs or zombies instead of harpies?"

Harpy hags suffer no retaliation penalty after they strike.  Dwarves and zombies do.  Also, harpy hags return to their starting point inside the walls after each attack, making it great fun to harass non-flying enemy attackers.

"Also, what's so great about the gargoyles? I never liked those fellows. They die instantly, unlike in Heroes 4 for example where they're tough to kill in early game."

They're great for creeping early in the game because they're relatively high speed for level 2 creatures and provide excellent fodder when protecting my shooters.  Also, IIRC, enemy vampire lords can't recoup health points while attacking gargoyles.  I hate any vampire lord that isn't mine.

"Oh yeah, Power Lich also?? I mean, PLs are nice-looking at the only shooter (if I;m not wrong) that has AOE damage, but their damage/attack stats are not spectacular."

Power liches can target multiple enemies, are immune to low morale, cannot help enemies VLs recoup health (see above), and can be resurrected at low magic cost by level 3 animate dead spell (other shooters can only be revived using the costlier Resurrection spell, which is either level 4 or 5 (I forget which).

And yeah, they're really nice looking.

Classic dendroid mind.Slow but solid.
You should know, the game is like a Spirite, fast rush, weak army but tons of trick for win.You should learn some of them.

So many HOMM3 creatures were so designed so well but my favorite has to be the Behemoths. I remember when I first started the game and encountered a stack of them as a neutral creature. How hard can they be?
So I attacked them.
They slaughtered my entire army.

Funny!

I remember doing the same in 1999 when I first played H3SOD and I was playing Inferno and found a nice glowing shield (it might have been lion's shield of courage but I'm not sure) guarded by many unicorns. War unicorns actually. And they were "pack" if I'm not wrong. And all I had was about 100 imps and 10 or so gogs. Numbers might differ a little here coz it's a long time since I did this and I don't remember the exact numbers... but anyway, the point is: I looked at my numbers (100+ units), I saw that nice, shiny shield and a "pack" of... horses. And I was like "hmm, horses, let's kill'em!". Went in, got butchered, and went out like "hmm, bad horses, very bad"

There is no sense to speak about tactical favourite ( i love to play in different ways). Visual favourites are:
1. Gorgones. I love Fortress at all but these bulls are the most original and impressive unit.
2. Behemoths. Terrifying, powerful and with that claws
3. Faerie Dragons. Cute and annoying like real insects) OR dragonflies.

No they don't. For a real battle, split the units into 2 stacks of 1 and X-1 to deal with the retal (in case of haste), for testing/vs. neutrals, just use wait.

You could have written the 5 replies and joined them afterwards into one post.

firebirds [...] it's weaker than most other level 7 units. Probably that's why I rushed to dismiss it.

The power of the phoenix lies in their speed and their growth. They're the best level 7 ingame.

monere said:
Also, ancients (and titans, too) are too strong, which is why I left them out of the rankings. I don't like too strong units. They take away from the fun and tactical aspect of the game.

Too strong in what way? I find the level 7's are pretty balanced except for the Chaos Hydra, which is too slow.

Btw. my favorite unit is the Scorpicore. I like the concept.
