The best of the best 1vs1 is Nightmare(Horse)
Who has not struggled against them does not know what those creatures.
No creature can not resist the Death Stare attack (only undead perhaps because it is already dead)
And second place is Might Gorgon ...same killer for me as Nightmare.

Alright, my first post here, been playing the game since it was released 
For me, my fave creatures are Phoenixes. I love the versatility and 'geddon, resurrect or clone are always fun to cast on them.
Second would be Archangels or Black Dragons.
Next up would be Sprites. Because Luna

If we don't count the BAMF unit known as the Azure Dragon, I love Archangels for their Resurrection ability as a close second, followed closely by the Vampire Lords at third place because they'll just heal up whatever damage they take.

dwarves, reptillion, zealots are my favourites... also no top are black dragon, phoenixes, energy elementals, pixies, elves, gold dragons, centaurs, champions, titans, gremlins, wyverns, basilisks and hydras

Liches raised by the Cloak of the Undead King on a necro specialist hero, 1:1 conversion rate. Not in 1vs1 of course, but they are legion...
We are the Liches. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. 
In The Lord Of War, I once raised some 100k by the end...

black dragons... red dragons... archdevils... they look cool
usefulness... archangels... azuredragons are a sort of "the best" creature ... so in a way, they're cool too
but let's not forget that the peasants are the best ones. They're the weakest in the game... but in the end... all of us humans were peasants once, and look at us now

Also, you don't have to say exactly 3 creatures (you could say your top 10, or just your favorite one), but that's the standard. Here is the list by me:
1: Vampire Lord (I like them because of their ability)
2: Crystal Dragon (I get used to them with the map Brave New World, there's a Crystal Cavern in the beginning on it... and I like their looks)
3: Mighty Gorgon (when I was a kid, they were my favorite unit - because of their ability; I still have sympathy for them)
Here is mine:
1.Thunderbird (allowing you to trick)
2.Rogue/Sharpshooter (they look mysteryous)
3.Mighty Gorgon (Awsome,i liked them when i was a kid too  )
