I like the atmosphere of HOMM2 and I have spent days on it. HOMM4 wasn't what I expected, but the huge amount of texts in the campaigns made it an exceptional game. However, HOMM3 was the perfect game of the series: Great atmosphere, great gameplay, great music, and gives you a sense of completeness unlike HOMM4 does. HOMM3 is the ideal/perfect game in my opinion; not among just HOMM series, but in general. If only the following titles could maintain its legacy...

By Gods, it still has to be Heroes III.
Heroes V is great but still riddled with far too many mistakes and hack jobs. Shoddy campaigns and translation diminish the atmosphere, and the creature lineups are pretty out of whack.
Heroes V has a far better battle system, skill system and map editor, though.

I have all 5 installed but HOMM2 still has the magic after all these years. When you consider how old it is, and that it never had any mods like WOG or Equalibrius, it is amazing how this game still holds interest.
This is the only game where I leave the music on. The other great things IMO are the continual growth of recruiting locations and the generally fun-looking creatures and animations.

While it's true that of all HoMM games I must have played 3 the longest, I don't think it's best. The Add-Ons are lackluster, the additional conflux town is not to my liking (an improvised town lacking originality), and in general the game is very unbalanced.
With the last expansion, from a pure gaming point of view 5 is - for me - the better game in all respects, except the graphic one: 3d may be fine and all, but I'd have wished for simpler graphics on the map at least.
That's where my vote went, but it's a tough decision between 5 and 2. I'm all with those who voted 2. 2 has the most atmosphere and is the blueprint for what made the game so addictive. 2 was the one that hooked me to the series, so when comparing 2 and 3 I tend to downplay the flaws of 2 and overstate the good things and vice versa with 3.

I can't speak for games 4 and 5, but I seriously consider game 3 to be the best that I've played. In the old days, I probably preferred 2 over 3 due to the nostalgia factor and because it was easier for me to beat a game in HOMM2 than in the much more complex HOMM3. Recently, I've been getting better at HOMM3 and I realized it was much more enjoyable than I first made it out to be. The last time I played HOMM2, it was fun, yet it pained me not to have the many newer features that graced its sequel.

I've played all of them, and h3 was at first my favorite. Even after H5 first launched I was not really impressed. It grew on me though. Once ToTE launched with Stronghold, I was hooked. It is now my favorite, folled by 3. Then 2,1, then 4 . That is including fan made content/addons/etc.

I'd say Heroes 2.
Heroes 1 had graphics made to look colourful and in the style of the previous 3 Might and Magic games. (I mean, they even copied Crag Hack, Yog and Sandro from them.)
Heroes 2 refined the game significantly and the style was changed to a slightly less cartoony, more heraldic look. Both games were responsible for launching the Genre.
Heroes 3 and 5 are tied for me. The Pre-rendered graphics of 3 and 4 were quickly outdated, Heroes 5 is showing its age now too (but still looks pretty good for now).
Gameplay wise, I'd say it's a tie between 2, 3 and 5. They play very similarly, but have progressively changed and improved the combat system and map editor.
I honestly like Heroes 4, but it's hands down the worst of the best. I hated putting all of my hard work into a hero only to have them killed by Black Dragons before they even got a chance to do anything, making their bonus stats and spellcasting comepletely useless and pointless to level. Heroes 4 to me looked like a failed attempt at cashing in on the popularity of the new kid on the block (Age of Wonders, which had killable heroes you could band together in the same group, an isometric perspective and monsters that could wander without a hero accompanying them).
I only play these games for hotseat though, and graphics have never been an issue for me. So Heroes 2, 3 and 5 bring me back the most (not in any order), then 1 for a laugh now and then. I barely touch 4 to be honest... it's a good game but it sent me running back to 2 and 3.

Heroes 2 was like a whole new experience in gaming but then came along HOMM3 and I experienced nirvana and game addiction, hours & hours of hot seat and pizza .HOMM4 was like waiting for the pizza delivery guy to arrive but when I open the door there comes out of nowhere some ninja midget who starts kicking my balls until there is nothing left but emptiness & regrets for opening the damn door. Then, you hide under the bed waiting for the midget to disappear, hoping that HOMMV will erase this moment but now you are a ken-doll and nothing will ever be the same.

They are all great games. The pity thing is that they require very deep knowledge and long training each one, so there is no one that can say he mastered them all, thus having to choose one, maximum two. Those who say H3 is the best never were good at H5 and those who excel at H4 or H5 suck at H3. It is us who are limited, not one of the versions being better or worse.

What a citation! Gonna sculpt it on a wall over my bed.
Personally I find Heroes 4 the most playable part, but it died soon after the release because of no mod support. Bad's hex editing is good for nothing

I was amazed when I saw the quality of Veldrynius H4 maps. I felt that THIS will be the game for me and my upcoming silly maps. But I got tired when I had to start the game from scratch and eventually gave up too soon. A shame, but real life is sucking us from REAL accomplishments, as HoMM
