H5
H4
H6
H3
H2
H3WOG
Listed in order from best to worst. Everyone modding their own junk into a game does not make the original game better. H6 is halfway on the list but i reserve the right to change my oppinion about that seeing as once ubi pulls their stuff together it will become an immensely better game.

4 is the best
I know a lot of people dislike 4 for the changes, but I really quite enjoy the changes. Just a couple of examples:
1) A powerful hero in late game who can solo kill entire armies - why is that a bad thing? I actually find it pretty cool and adds to different ways of developing a hero (for example, a solo warrior versus a military commander.)
2) Compulsory selection of creature type at levels 2, 3, and 4 - this adds a different dimension to strategic planning. I understand unit upgrades also involve strategic planning, but it seems that being required to choose one type of unit over another actually makes the strategizing deeper.
Perhaps I’m missing something because I don’t play multiplayer. Is the game broken on multiplayer mode or something?
I do agree that in some respects the game feels rushed. Some of the art designs look terrible. Some say that the computer’s AI is broken, but I guess since I’m not that good at gaming I can’t say I can easily handle the computer AI anyway.

This is wrong on many levels. First, having a modding language and tools is a luxury the majority of games don't have. Secondly, it is not about making the game objectively better, but subjectively better, for that player game experience, that's it. Thirdly, a modding language preserves the original game and only adds the possibility of personalize some aspects, up to the user whims. Fourthly, it clearly extends one game life, by allowing endless variants.

HOMM 3
Then Homm 5 but it is to complicated, to many effects / abilities ect and I like the graphical style of homm3 better, homm5 is kinda undefined and less realistic looking and I hate that most maps are kinda dark and depressive looking, but def a good game still
Then Homm 6
Skipped Homm 4 seeing it online, never played 1-2 to old for me

my deal with it is that Homm3 has better graphics when it should be the other way around and the creature line up is not so good

While I somewhat liked Heroes 2-4 (though I felt forced to play 4, at a time I didn't really like it), I must go with 3.
HoMM 2 was fun for an 10 year old, but the entire game consisted of cheating Black Dragons into your army.
HoMM 3 wasn't very fun to begin with, but the map making aspect was more enjoyable than the HoMM 2 game, and the game grew on me.
HoMM 4 is a game I didn't like at first. After rediscovering it, I think it's ok, more of a HoMM 2 continuation, than a HoMM 3 one.

HoM&M 3 all the way.
H2 was fun and very charming, but H3 surpassed it in many areas.
H4 is just too different game, almost like a new subgenre.
H5 had some brilliant improvements, but has a poorly performance and too much randomness.

1. HMM3 is the very best, no doubt in my mind. That's SoD with HD + fast animation. WoG is too random for me.
2. HMM4 is enjoyable enough. Nice graphics and very good music.
2. (yes, same). HMM2 has nostalgic graphics, but combat animation is too slow to enjoy for me. It also has nice music. Close to HMM3 in many other ways.
3. HMM5 was not enjoyable the little time I spend on it. Annoying zoom-in effects in combat was just too much for me to take. There's too much focus on no-good cinematic effects in games nowadays. I also didn't like the teen-ish graphics much. I am mostly into 2D. Maybe I'll give it a another try one day, though.
?HMM6 Looks bad. I haven't even wanted to give it a try just by looking at it.

You should try to have some duels with other people if you can. They were damn fun

I think you wouldn't like it, and considering the amount of bugs still left after the expansion...

These conversations are still happening, eh?
Well, for what it's worth, I'll give my two cents.
I would rank them:
Heroes 3
Heroes 5
Heroes 2
Heroes 1
Heroes 6
I haven't had the opportunity to play 4 yet. I'm waiting for GOG to do another sale on it.
Heroes 3, to me, is the most in-depth and compelling of all the games. The balance is a little iffy, but the atmosphere, strategy, and replayability is simply unmatched.
Heroes 5 is a close second. It was initially a pretty awful game, but with patches and expansions it's become a worthy addition to the series. I enjoy certain elements more than H3 (namely the Skill Wheel and alternate upgrades) but I don't find it quite as enjoyable. I'll admit that this is often to do with atmosphere as much as gameplay - the cutscenes and storyline of the campaigns are laughably bad, many of the town designs are dull, especially compared to their slightly more vibrant predecessors (Fortress especially springs to mind), and the game world itself is possibly the most bland creation I've ever seen in a fantasy game. The entire package feels like an uninspired rip-off of Warcraft 3 - until you actually play the game, that is, at which point it becomes an incredible amount of fun.
Heroes 2 is a great game that suffers from being inferior to Heroes 3 in almost every way. Still, the atmosphere is fantastic, it boasts arguably the best soundtrack in the series, and the addictive gameplay is still there in spades.
It will no doubt be a bit controversial that I ranked Heroes 1 above Heroes 6, but while Heroes 1 is simple, streamlined and fairly basic (not to mention heavily unbalanced in favour of Warlock), the core gameplay is sound, functional, and in spite of all that it's missing, an incredible amount of fun. Heroes 6 has got a lot more bells and whistles, but at its core is a fundamentally flawed game that just isn't enjoyable.

Ranked 1st on my list is H2, H3 and H5. That's because I enjoy them all for different reasons and cannot pick one over the others.
H2...my first taste of HoMM Magic and it's a very good game.
H3...<imo> the most complete for the dedicated fan. (No pun intended)
H5...unmatched immersion for me.
1,4 and 6 I've never played.
I doubt I'll ever give 1 or 6 a go but 4 sounds like it's well worth the visit.

As you're much wiser than me, I'm sure you have better understanding of what you'll enjoy, and what you won't, while I can easily dream myself into a world where something that later turns out to be boring, is very exciting.
That said, and to use too strong words, I believe Heroes 4 for those who try it for the first time is either love/hate. The game is very different in aspects, and if you'll enjoy this difference is something only you can find out for yourself ... so I guess I'm stating the obvious, but I've just seen a lot of people getting excited about Heroes 4 and then very disappointed afterwards.

One other unforgivable thing that HMM5 did which I cannot get over. They renamed our lovely 'castle' to 'haven'. That's so mainstream and cliche that it hurts my soul. Long live castle!
Also, you only have to watch this trailer of HMM6 to see what's wrong with the gaming industry today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzmhb4RqKF0
Easy to digest and forget. Dumbed down. Overly romanticized for teens. Zero depth and cliche. Childish and unbelievable. Focus on pointless cinematics. Short lasting.

Well, to be honest it was my son's reaction, that was exactly as you've described, that was the reason behind my never even trying the game.
However, I'm a stick in the mud these days and other than TW I'm not interested in anything other than HoMM. So, I'm sorta thinking now, I'm going to take what I get and enjoy it, one way or another. Sort-of..."I will like it , yes indeed, I will like it, I'm sure I will".<L> Can't hurt.

So true.
I enjoyed the game when it came out - for more than a year actually. But since then I haven't been able to play it again, I get bored with a few turns
A shame, because I remember the campaigns where great...

played 3, 4, 5 (and recently downloaded 2 for my mobile phone )
I was at a young age when i started to play 3, and i loved it. When 4 came out i was amazed by the graphics so i hooked on with 4. I was pretty skilled but it bored me after a while when i found 3 somewhere in a box some day. I still regret the day i left that game for 4, 3 is the best. I played 5 as well and it was fantastic. However the scarce amount of maps quickly dropped me out.

1st. Heroes 3 is the best. Still play it today from time to time.
Just a ton of content.
2nd I would say its a tie with H2 and H5. H2 is still very charming and was awsome back in the day. Today however i tend to skip it because it lacks content compared to H3.
H5 is a nice and a pretty underrated game. They introduced alot of cool hero/creature abilites. Nice looking townscreens and with the expansions you had alot of content. Overall a good sequal that could almost be a rival to H3.
Sadly bad AI and preformance issues ruined things.
3rd
H4 and H6.
Sadly both where bad games, they tried to bring something new to the franchise. Sadly it didn't work. Both games also feels like slimmed down versions of its predessesors. Which is why i think both felt unnecessary to play.
