The game I was most familiar with is H3 by far obviously, I got to know the game inside out strategically and mathematically. But some other installments had some really good and/or interesting things: H4 music which is simply unmatched, H4 2 creatures per level, H5 Skill Wheel etc.). A few people sadly understand what it takes to create the next Heroes game for the ages - meaning in the game industry, and it is quite simple:
1. Make map objects distinct on the map. Realism is nice, but serves no purpose in the game of Heroes which is strategy in a fantasy environment, not vice versa. The graphics need to be streamlined.
Furthermore, make the units in combat larger then in H6 (H2 could do) and again, make them stand out from the background. When I look at those tiny units in H6 my head hurts. The town walls do not need to be realistic in size. I should not be forced to zoom or rotate to grasp what is going on. In fact, I would rather have it not possible at all.
2. Include a functional map editor on the release
3. Include a functional RMG on the release
4. Don't do crazy things (like, leaving out town screens)
5. Don't make a bugfest of a game
6. Sim turns would be welcome
7. Include LAN and Hotseat
And that's it. Everything else (skill, town, spell and hero system) are nuances that can be polished.

I noticed the huge walls in HMM6. Pretty ridicules, yes. It just goes to show that the focus is on wrong things in many new games.
Like, is camera zoom-in-effects more important (a cinematic effect that gets old really fast) than that the combat is fast and functional? HMM3 is a good example of it done in the right direction. And, yes, don't release a game that can less than a previous game in the series. That defeats the purpose.

I agree on what you said, but I'd emphasize on the first point. having such a detailed models like the ones used in H6, making all units so small lose the magic and feels a total waste.
Making units models on the battlefield bigger would help to get "inside" the game.
Worse of all, on M&M: Heroes Online they followed the same pattern, making creature models even smaller

Could be interesting! What do you search for in app store?
Just search for Heroes of might and magic, the game is called Free Heroes 2. It is a bit puzzling at first, but it works quite well! (you can choose yourself which buttons you like to use for the mousecursors). I got an android system, im not sure if it is in the Iphone store though. Good luck

Thanks a lot marksmasters!
But I couldn't find it. Heroes 2 doesn't seem to exist for the Apple phones.
But I think I remember seeing something that looked exactly like Heroes 2 a year ago but I didn't download because strangely it was called something different that I don't remember, which is why I asked.

Because they don't understand. They are just flowing with the river, while Heroes were never part of the river. It's not just Heroes - developers do not understand 3D at all. There is a reason why for instance StarCraft Brood War videos in 360p look 4x better then StarCraft 2 in 720p; there is a reason why Diablo 2 graphics have more appeal then the chaotic Diablo 3, etc. Developers are continuosely sacrificing simplicity for flashiness, and they are making the same mistake over and over again.

I agree so much. Developers should spend some time playing older videogames and learning what made them so great.

No I'm pretty certain it was H2 but I've checked up Palm Heroes and it looks very promising, thanks a lot for the hint.

My favourite is definitely, by a wide margin, Heroes II.
It's really the only game in the series that I can play for months on end every day and not get bored with it. The replay value is quite honestly unlimited. It was my first Heroes game (I was only 6 when it came out) and I watched my brother play the demo from the PCGamer disc. After we got it for Christmas one year (I think it was the big box... it had The Price of Loyalty and included Heroes I and King's Bounty), in probably 1998 or so, I've been hooked ever since.
Second is a tie between Heroes I + III. I have a lot of fond memories of Heroes I.

My favourite was alway's Crag Hack for over 10 yrs now. I don't care if stronghold sucks it just the coolest.
Oh you were talking about games.
Then my favourite was heroes 3. Heroes 6 comes 2nd. I think it has potential and feel's new but also lacking in features.

It's really a battle between H3 and H5:
HoMM 3 has everything one and 2 had and more, and HoMM 5 has even more and better graphics.
However HoMM 3 has the better atmosphere, feel and soundtrack. It's a more polished game and gets my vote.

At the moment my ranking is the following.
1. Heroes 5 (improves in more ways on Heroes 3 than it disimproves)
2. Heroes 2 (my first Heroes)
3. Heroes 1 (the closest I can get to my first Heroes and I like the spell learning system because it makes magic guilds more important)
4. Heroes 3 (too smooth and 'perfect' for my taste, factions too generalised)
5. Heroes 6 (not that bad, I played it for many weeks after its release but didn't feel an urge to play it again since then)
6. Heroes 4 (not that bad either but too different)

My personal ranking:
1. Heroes 3
2. Heroes 5
3. Heroes 2
4. Heroes 1
5. Heroes 6
19619751345. Heroes 4
Well, I understand that Heroes 4 has some very well-written stories, but I only played it once, many years ago. I do plan to go through it once more sometime soon, just for the stories.

Well, this is my list:
1. Heroes 5
2. Heroes 3
3. Heroes 2
4. Heroes 4
5. Heroes 1
6. Heroes 6
Note that I ranked Heroes 1 low not because game is bad, but because I have played it very little.

My ranking is:
Number 1 - Heroes 3 with all expansions and WoG
2 - Heroes 1
3 - Heroes 2
4, 5, 6 - Heroes 4, Heroes 5, Heroes 6 (all on the last place)
I always wished a new Heroes 3 game with modern 3D graphic and exactly same design, structure, monsters and items. This can be amazing !!!

I am not sure 3D is compatible with random generator, more complex the graphics are, less flexible become the editors.
I also like H4 graphics but frankly, H3 simple graphics are the most suitable for quick and intuitive visual analysis. The 3D battles from H5-6 give me head ache, impossible to follow. Not speaking about adventure map, is simply unreadable, drowned under thousand of animated eye candies.

I do agree on this list but Heroes 4. No matter how you hate it, H6 just deserves the lowest place in the rank
