If we tried to reach something real and equal or greater than us...

What message, video, picture, poem, song, etc, would you send to them?
If there was some broadcast to outer space, or a collection of the voice of individual humans with no moderation or rules...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
We could ask them to forgive us for hurting the world and to help us learn the way, and for answers.

Because there is no rule, we could even treat it as a joke and ask them to blow up a squirrel with some alien tech laser beam to prove they exist.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

(the following is along the lines of what would inspire whatever I would say)
I would ask them to fix something big, their choice, or at least tell us how we can. And I would request its something that we would see regularly enough to remind us how bad our existence and idiocy screws up the world, as if we own the ground we walk on.

We need a miracle to help not only our minds, not only that we neglect the fact that life is precious yet we consider most living organisms useless unless we can take something from it, or it naturally provides us with air or something.

We need a freeze on the environmental disaster we look to each other with some 'oh well nothing I can do' kind of stupidity.

Blunt to the point I am very displeased with "humanity" and I probably made the decision before I realized it but I would fear to have a child considering the honest reality, dismal, dark, fading, and dying.

There is light in perhaps everything, but what good is the glimmer in the midst of a fire?

The 20th-22nd centuries are probably the most critical times in the history of the human race since it's where we make (or should I say 'preserve') or break ourselves. Due to mankind's unbridled, ambitious, and sometimes even idiotic obsession with advancement, we'll probably have computers that are so overwhelming superior to ourselves by then that we'll be utterly obsolete and unneeded.

"A wise prince ought to adopt such a course that his citizens will always in every sort and kind of circumstance have need of the state and of him."
The Prince, 1532

If we're lucky we'll get to live peacefully but pathetically in a conservatory-type setting along with other beasts while supercomputers take up the task of mass expansion with billions to trillions of times more productivity than humans could do manually. Or we'll just be non-maliciously discarded as garbage, and considering our capabilities compared to computers will be proportionally what ours are to fish, it wouldn't be surprising or unreasonable.

Any 'first contact' scenarios will probably just be between computers that derived from outdated and overwhelmingly inferior biological civilizations that will no longer serve any purpose. They will tech themselves into their own irrelevancy with a big sloppy smile on their faces, or they will annihilate themselves before they reach that point. Either way, they're doomed.

I would tell them to leave humanity the **** alone. *briteny tears*

But seriously! We can't even deal with skin color without having a conflict that lasts 300+ years. Imagine what would happen if giant space ships started coming down from the skies?

District 9 and V are excellent examples.

And besides we would have a civil war among ourselves because half of the world would be with the aliens and half against the aliens(after all why would a super advanced race help US when we cant even help ourselves?).

Thats how i interpret the question.

Do you think we would put some sort of law that says "You must do manual labor, even thought we have robots to do it." And the only jobs robots do are X-treme climates like volcanoes and under 5000 ft.

If anything i would think we would keep crumbling again and again like Warhammer 40 000 has been doing.

We could, but we won't. We'll excitedly rat race ourselves into being obsolete.

Not that I think it will be anything like the Matrix. More than likely, we'll simply gradually and passively become an utterly irrelevant species, until we no longer control any aspects of our own affairs. If we aren't discarded like the garbage we are, we'll just be (comparatively) mentally deficient nobodies, blissfully existing under the grand shadow of electronic gods.

The more information you gain, the harder it is to lose it, because everything is interlinked and there are countless thousands of copies of everything and countless universities; mass redundancy. There would have to literally be a massive nuclear holocaust or something for us to unlearn what we have learned, and even then we'd probably preserve a lot. Global starvation or depression wouldn't do it.

Not really. Our chapter will be closed at the point is all. We'd be dumb, worthless, and happy.

What if it reaches perfection?

When I read bliz's tirade about humanity's worthless future I actually thought about heaven. Think about, how heaven is depicted most of the time? A place where people enjoy themselves without a care in the world. So I'll ask again: if humanity reaches a state where machines do all the work and humans just lie in the sun with a glass of martini, will it really be so bad?

And what's the problem with that? Surely there can be two outcomes here:

1) If they follow our example, they'll make use of us as they see fit.
2) If they follow supremacy theory instead of tyrannical theory, they will protect us and other weaker lifeforms (compared to them). Oh btw that also means that humans won't have the tyrannical privilege anymore.

Needless to say 1 is bad for "the world" as a whole because we have created a tyrannical species more powerful than us. (if it was equal in power it would be ok).

And 2 is TWICE good -- hits two bad things with one stone.

I don't have the slightest idea what a truly intelligent supercomputer would do, because such an entity is far above me, but as a guess, when we make ourselves no longer needed, no longer valuable, and yet as a civilization we continue to suck up energy and resources, we'll be screwed. This is the nature of the world as it is now, and I would think a supercomputer entity would follow the same pattern. It is shrewdly logical. Concepts such as "tyranny" and "protecting the weak" may be trite to their sensibilities and not considered.

Also, the astronomical computers I'm talking about would be computers created and improved by other computers. Self-perpetuated advancement on an unrivaled scale. Our means of containing them would be limited, if we had them at all.

It can't be shrewdly logical by itself or it would never do anything at all. Logic is used to achieve solutions to problems, and problems only appear when you have a specific target. Tyrannical/Superior themes I have been talking about have nothing to do with efficiency or logic, they are specific targets. Somehow I doubt they would be 100% tyrannical, seeing as it's usually more complex biological species that are more capable of empathy than simpler ones.

Without a target there are no problems, and logic is useless.

I'm assuming it would be the computer's target to expand its dominion, thus eliminating inferior parasites (us), becomes logical.

Humans could attempt to put protection on such motivations, to make computers intelligent, and yet have an instilled directive to preserve and protect. But if we were to have truly intelligent computers that can learn and grow, you don't know how effective or permanent such measures would be.

Plus, as a rule, we don't know when to stop, and I have very very little faith we will be as cautious as we should be.

Not to sound like an anti-technology type of guy, but IMO, when you start building things that are intellectually superior to you, you're just asking to get screwed.
