Quote: You kidding? That's an awesome name and it's not even made up.
Agreed.
Norse names might be a bit hard to pronounce, but Norse myth is so many different shades of awesome I still find it mind boggling we haven't had anything close to it in HoMM so far. (no the dwarves from HoMMV don't count)
I'd love to see proper Norse giants, big burly humanoids with large beards in ornate viking armor, sometimes clad in frost or flame.
The children of Thrym or Surtur respectively.
Norse myth has monstrous serpents, wolves, squid, dragons, horses, eagles and many many more, more then enough to fill two factions with.
Don't forget that Elves were originally from Norse myth, including Dark Elves (though they called them "Black Elves" (literal translation).
Dwarves from Norse myth made the most wondrous things, such as a flowing wig made out of thousands of minute golden chains to replace the hairs of the goddess Sif, they made a giant hunting boar for the god Freyr, they made Thor's legendary hammer, and much much more awesome stuff.
So much cool stuff....
The Dwarves in HV were such a horrible, horrible missed opportunity, they could have made it the best faction, BY FAR, but they fell short, and horribly so.
Edit: Same goes for the Rakshasa and Hindu mythology (and it's relations).
We don't have to stick to the beaten path, and if this includes stuff that's a bit hard to pronounce, SO BE IT!

Now why don't we all start listing the mythologies that we like and those we hate and humbly claim that some of them just can't be used as an inspiration for a fantasy game... Oh wait, the word "fantasy" makes this a bit complicated... Hm... No matter! Some mythologies just suck and some creatures simply double-suck and some names are absolute archsuckers!
I have spoken.

I think a norse-based faction would be great, since all other factions have their unique styles that reminds of different past civilizations, Necro = Egyptish kinda , academy = oriental and so on. so if they where to implement a "snow" faction it fit so well if it had a norse/viking style. Presumably the snow faction would be the dwarfs, and then they could have norse-mythology creature such as trolls and giants.
But the best thing would be if skipped the dwarf faction and made a troll faction instead

I do hope they keep away from norse mythology.
Yet you list two Norse creatures
Kraken
Doppelgangers (vardøger in Norse myth)
That aside, out of curiosity, what do you have against Norse myth?
As a DnD fan, surely you should be able to appreciate it, there's a large number of classic DnD monsters that are Norse in origin.
Like say:
Trolls
Fire Giants
Frost Giants
Elves and Dark Elves and Dwarves (all norse myth)
And many many many more DnD monsters and creatures.
But I lost track of my question again, I'm curious what you have against Norse Myth, just pure curiosity.

Actually this is one of the best things about heroes, the awesome mix of creatures. At least in heroes 3 they had ALL kind of creatures around from different mythologies, some of which they had made themselves and some more modern.
Which is to say a little nice mix of everything, and then adding them to the right faction in order of their theme. In that way they made each faction distinct and unique.

Egyptian myth has a Serpent that tries to eats gods,
has a hippo/crocodile/lion hybrid monster that devours the souls of the sinners,
has a giant invisible scarab beetle roll the sun along the sky.
Greek myth has a man-bull that devours 10 Athenian youths every year,
a giant made out of bronze chucking stones at ships,
a titan that holds up the sky,
a giant three headed dog that guards the underworld,
three evil hags that share a single eye and cut the threads of a mortal's life.
Heck you don't like overblown?
Greek myth has a dragon with a thousand heads and a thousand wings who sent all the gods fleeing before him in terror, except Zeus who managed to THROW A MOUNTAIN on top of him to trap him.
His eyes shot fire and his legs were made out of hundreds of serpentine coils.
He's Typhon and he's snowing badass but he's also the most ridiculous mythological monster ever.
Or how about Echidna who is the mother of monsters, she is described as a serpentine female creature but she and Typhon gave birth to amongst others:
Chimera
Cerberus
Orthus
Hydra
And many many more.
I drew a picture of how I decided to interpret Typhon:
http://urazel.deviantart.com/art/Typhon-the-lord-of-Monsters-166429350
The point I'm trying to make here is this:
We have never incorporated myth accurately, it always has to adapt to a game's setting.
I mean how could one complain about incorporating the Fenrir wolf but turn a blind eye to Cerberus?
Or turn a blind eye to how they handle the Lammasu (awesome though he is) but think that adding the Lindormm is a bad idea?
Also on the note of Einherjar, they are not like normal undead, they are the world's most elite warrior spirits.
Ancestral warriors who fight for the glory of their gods, nothing like some strange ghost or zombie, they are fully sentient brawling vikings that come down from their version of heaven to beat the stuffing out of everything that gets in their way.
Valkyries EXIST to create Einherjar it's their purpose, the entire point of the Valkyrie is to select which warriors that die on the field of battle DESERVE to become Einherjar.
I love greek myth, I love egyptian myth, I love Aztec myth, I love babylonian myth, I love hindu myth, I love Chinese myth, I love Japanese myth and I also love Norse myth, for all the same reasons.
But none of them are any less ridiculous then any of the others.
You want to see a game that handled Norse myth in an entertaining way? try Age of Mythology, it's a really good RTS and the Norse faction is awesome!

In the end of the day it's HoMM (Heroes of Might and Magic), NOT HoAM(Heroes of "accurate" Mythologies).. Some Creatures are BASED on Mythologies , But it doesn't mean 100% accuracy..
Most of the creatures in a fantasy games are taken from different mythologies , but they are not the same , varies from game to game..
So my point is that Norse Mythology fits PERFECTLY as a base for New units for HoMM.. And for example if Fortress was based more on Norse rather then 6 dwarfs, i would have LOVED that faction!!!
YES YES and YES for Scandinavian Myths!!!!

There's a poll about the 4th faction at the official forum and Sir Charles is also a Stronghold theory supporter:
"Well, first off...Ubisoft has already confirmed that one of the final 2 factions will be a completely new one. So all we really have to consider is that last faction. I voted for Stronghold. Not because I prefer them, but rather because it makes the most sence in terms of game balance.
I fully expect the new town to be a mostly magic based town and a theoretically "good" faction. Stronghold will be a might based town. I'm sure some will call them "evil" but I think they lean more towards "neutral" IMO.
I guess we'll see in a few weeks. )"
I wonder what kinda meltdown it's going to cause among the fans if they indeed ditched Sylvan/Dungeon/Academy for Stronghold.

Agreed with Sir Charles.Stronghold is the most possibly one IMO,and I had mention the reason before.
No matter what, barbarian appeared in the Heroes I and had a long history in the series.

It just feels strange that they would ignore Sylvan that has stuff happening to them around this time and those events could perfectly lead up to a Dungeon expansion town (but hopefully without too many Dark elves).
It would feel weird to have a Heroes game without elves. :S

Agreed.
Stronghold was one the most unique factions in the franchise, the only faction that truly valued Might over Magic.
As for a HoMM without Elves, one can only hope.

I hope there will be no elves, at least not first. It would be better if they were added later in an expansion. If this will be the case I'm going to miss the Dungeon since it is my favorite. The classic Dungeon was a lot cooler, but the dark elf Dungeon is still so much better then most other factions...
But Stronghold and then maybe a Naga faction would be great
