My son and I are going to give this a shot tonight. Looks like it'll be a lot of fun.
How well does the AI play? I've noticed that in basic WOG, it doesn't necessarily do the upgrades very well -- going from centaurs that shoot to centaur captains that charge when he really, really needed shooters, for instance. Looks like there are a whole lot more tactical and even strategic questions involved with this mod. So I'm just curious how well he weighs the new creature's skills and powers.

Ain't that nice!
As I stated, the interchangeable creatures enhance the strategy of this game greatly and that will be shown best on Multiplayer games. That's because the AI doesn't get to choose strategically... It will always buy the creature it "thinks" is stronger. In original WOG, Centaur Captains have stronger stats than regular Centaurs and so the AI player will always choose to upgrade (even if the shooter ability is better than that).
However, I made the AI to choose...kinda. Actually, I chose for it.
For instance, in Dungeon, in sixth level there are the Spider Queens in the first place and when you build the upgraded building you get the Scorpicores as well. The AI player never builds it and will always buy Spider Queens. That's because I "told" the AI that Spider Queens are stronger and that it isn't necessary to build the upgrade (and obtain the Scorpicores). In Inferno, the AI player will always buy Nightmares, rather than Efreeti. Same goes with all interghangeable creatures in towns. In fact the AI will always prefer the creatures I made it "think" that are stronger.

Thanks for the reply. And thanks for the effort you put into the mod, including the extra bit to keep the AI from making quite as many strategic errors.

The 8th level creatures were used around... Some 7th level upgrade in 8th level normaly (Devils, Behemoths, Hydras) but not all of them. For instance Paladins ARE Supreme Archangels (with their image and stats changed of course).
So the 7th to 8th upgrade in the game options doesn't really work...

Couldn't get it to install. We ran the new WOG + ERA install, which did fine, then tried the self-extractor. It flashed the screen more quickly than I could make out what it said (but appeared to be a window for an installer) which immediately closed and went back to the window. Didn't make any difference if I put the HoL in WOG folder or left in Downloads or even on a memory stick.
Think I'll try the RARs. All the rest of the mods I've tried I did that way, and they were painless. Just thought I'd let someone know. Windows XP Professional on a Dell, for what its worth.

I think it is an antivirus problem. I have same problem often, with Kaspersky. First I scan the exe, then disable the antivirus, so it let me in.
The rars should work.

As I said, I thought the self-installer wasn't really necessary. The instalation process I describe in the first page isn't that hard to follow. I hope you work it out... Post again If you have any trouble.

Is there a way of installing this mod without using the updater? Maybe provide the mod already extracted?
Because it seems I have troubles using the updater. My OS is Win7 and I have changed the language/location to USA/English and the warning still comes up and the updater simply doesn't run. "Compatibility mode" or "run as administrator" does not solve the problem.

I don't know another way, the updater is the way to go. I have windows 7 too, but it works fine.
I noticed that you posted on WOG + ERA 1.8 thread, saying that you had the same problem on installing. I don't know why you can't run the updater...

Updater is no needed. Unrar and then drag every file where it must go (use MM archive to open H3sprite.lod and drag inside all the def/msk/msg).

Yep. You're right. I forgot about that...
Well, all the defs in this mod go to H3SPRITE.lod so with MMarchive it would be easy to install it too (not as easy as the updater, but still).

Thank you! Finally I will be able to add some new content to one of my favorite games!
I will continue to try finding out why I cant use the updater, I think the problem still lies within my country/language setup. Even though I do change my country/language the same error still appears. Since you also use Windows 7, may I ask you, Hero_Of_Light, what country/language you have activated while using the updater?
Thank you once again

I think my language was set to english at the time... I remember it had to be in Russian but I never changed it to that. I always have greek and english language installed in Windows.

Just tried manually installing the mod. I use the following version of MMArchive (http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=32737) is it the correct one? Because when I try to open "H3sprite.lod" (~83mb file) or "Hero_of_Light_modv3.0(ERA).wog" (which I figure has to do something with the manual installation since its located in the /update/ folder) I get access violation errors. I run MMArchive as administrator so it shouldn't have anything to do with windows permissions.
Am I even doing this the right way? I have simply:
- unrared/extracted the contents of "Hero_of_Light_modv3.0_(ERA).rar"
- placed it in the Heroes3+WoG+ERA folder
- then I tried to open both "H3sprite.lod" & "Hero_of_Light_modv3.0(ERA).wog" with MMArchive without any sucess
Any help is much appreciated!

No the process is as follows.
Once you've extracted all files from Hero_of_Light_modv3.0_(ERA).rar in your Heroes folder and replaced where necessary, you go to the update folder.
There, you will find HoL_mod_v3.0(ERA).wog, which is actualy a ziped file. Use winrar or 7zip to extract all files from it (in a new folder would be better). You will find out that the files within are def files (have the def extension).
Then, open MMarchive and load H3sprite.lod. Drag all the def files to the MMarchive window. It automatically changes the apropriate defs. If you do this right, then the creature's animations will be changed and you can close MMarchive (no saving is required).
Remember, before playing the game, go to WOG options to set them to default (as noted in the first page of this thread).
