That Necro image doesn't really lend itself to city development. The view is from ground level, and the terrain is very flat. Building anything in the foreground will block things behind it, and make everything very cluttered. Maybe if all the developments just add features to the main Necro building it could work, but even that would be kinda lame and cluttered.

In previous Heroes games, aside from 5, the view was from a slightly elevated position, and there was often a lot of varied elevation in the terrain; This meant you could build things in the foreground and background without a lot of overlap.

edit: Not saying I think that's the final image. It may be unlikely that it is for the reasons above.

   A petition for Town Screens is a welcomed initiative, a lot of people already pointed out the importance of at list an 2D Town Screen, and I must say even if for me is more related to the aesthetics of it it's an element that helps the immersion in the created fantasy world.

   I'm more than sure a town window is just not going to bring the same sentiment I had in H2 and upward till H5, when you entered your town, might be a psychologically induced reflex to the change from adventure map to a castle layout but I must say the thought of not having it is hard to get used to, guess I have to blame the previous 5 installments for getting me used to it, no better yet addicted to a Town Screen.

   Hope some changes will be taken in that regard or, don't want to sound out of line or a jinx, but H6 might turn out to be one of the best looking game in the franchise with the sorry ass town windows or the game almost as good if not better that H3 but with the town windows that ruined it's claim for the number 1 spot. (I might be exaggerating and just base this on feeling instead of facts, will have to wait to actually play the game)

At least the poll results show that this is an issue widely agreed upon by the fan base, and not just a little group of people who made this their most important cause.

The best thing would be if we had an option to switch between a full screen and the window-option. For those who want speed in multiplayer they can have that, and those who want atmosphere in single player can have that.

The speed in the multi-player games has never been an issue in Heroes, people who like fast games ignore the genre altogether and the rest don't give a damn about the few extra seconds needed to enter and exit the town screens. The entire "speed" explanation is some patched-up trash that I find pretty insulting to the intelligence of the fans.

What if I want speed in single player? Imo i didn't like homm5 town screens, I wouldn't mind 2d town screens Ala homm 3...
But homm 5 town screens killed the atmosphere of the game for me.

The short quarter second delay killed the atmosphere of the game for me.

One second i could be exploring Ashan and having fun and getting immersed in the game world, but those little quarter second delays would always shake that immersion off of me. It was the difference between being engaged in the game and merely playing it.

I never cared about atmosphere but the general non-responsiveness of homm 5 was something i didn't like. those intensive town screens didn't help either, and were part of the problem.

it's less about speed for me and more about smoothness.

Quarter second delay killed the atmosphere? Huh... So anything that pops out in less then 1/5th of a second is atmosphere killer? I'm pretty sure that town window will not satisfy your thirst for cosmic speed you are looking for.
For me much greater atmosphere killer then 0.25 second delay is small, non interactive pop-up window.
When you switch from adventure screen to battle same delay occurs - what do you propose? Battles in pop-up window to "smooth" gameplay even more?
And another thing, if you don't even care about atmosphere why you bring it up?

I was talking about inside the town screens during the second part, I'm sorry if i didn't make it clear i had edited that part of my post heavily and i must've missed that. This may not be true for everybody but then again, i don't expect everyone to agree with me.

I never cared too much for what atmosphere town screens added to the game because i always liked the adventure map more. Granted, the screens are a nice touch and I'd rather have some sort of graphical representation of the town rather than a text based menu. But i never really cared about them as much as other aspects of the game.

And a quarter second can kill immersion. It's a very subjective thing but for example, lets say you are watching a very serious movie, it has a rich dialogue and engaging plot and it is a very serious movie, but during the movie, periodically a cartoon clown popped up on the screen whenever a new scene started. Only for a quarter of a second though.

Some people can live withe the clown, and some people may even appreciate the clown, but I'm just saying i don't like his little cameo. i think it detracts from the overall experience more than the added detail in a town screen. I'm not against the screens but against the delay they provide. I've already asserted that i don't really care for the screens and i don't really care how detailed they are but rather how much of a delay they give. especially if the delay feels out of place like the clown. (even a fade to black then display the town screen would make it less disruptive. at least I'd know the game is doing something.)

(the clown specifically being the part of the game where it stops while loading the town screen. very pronounced in homm 5, the game locked up, animations stopped working and the whir of the computer as it got the town screen online and then without warning you were on the town screen.)

I'm sorry if I'm not verbalizing my position well enough, i have a hard time explaining things to others.

Edit: but then again, I'm not even sure if my concerns are relevant seeing that they (the town screens) are 2d.

I agree with you about the town screens in H5, I didn't really like them. Actually, the town windows sound better if they only were in full screen. But being a pop-up window makes it even worse than the H5 IMO.

Regarding speed, I would think that a full 2D screen is less demanding than having it op top of the adventure map, seeing how detailed they are making it (the adventure map that is).

This would only be true for entering the screen, exiting the screen would be very demanding on the other hand, switching to the town screen wouldn't be a problem, it's switching to the adventure map that would, for reasons you've already indicated.

Best of both worlds would be a full-screen pop-up window that overlays the adventure map entirely except for certain UI elements like the mini-map.
That's one advantage of the town-window thing, still being able to see the mini-map, this might not seem like much, but, especially if you hang around in your town a lot, it can be a useful visual reminder.

Something I only just considered, the UI implications this has.... that's actually a pretty strong benefit....
Still want it full-screen though.

Yes, but exiting was never a problem in H5, it was entering. It's mainly because the terrain is GPU intensive, so as long as your graphics card is up to the task, going to the world map will never be a problem. When you enter the town the game needs to get information off the HDD (hard drive) and that's what causes the pause. A 2D screen requires much less access time, and therefore you won't have the same pause.
Having an SSD (solid state disk) would remove the problem entirely in both cases!

Edit: Having a mini-map in the town wouldn't be such a bad idea. I've built things in the wrong town when you have many of the same kind and navigate from one to the other. But there shouldn't be any problem fitting it in full screen.

SSDs are kinda expensive though

Been thinking it might be a nice idea to have a slightly smaller SSD that you only install Windows on though... would make the computer boot up pretty damn quickly...

Offtopic though.

Yeah with 2D screens the whole "it takes time to enter" argument is really fricking weak. Town screens are such an important part of the atmosphere of the series for me that I'm actually beginning to doubt the awesomeness of this game.

"Atmosphere", "immersion", "experience", these are all highly subjective. There are no "arguments" here. I for one don't care about the town screens. I do however respect the fact that some people do. An option to view them full-screen is by far the best solution in my view.

In the end it's all very subjective, but now at least we've ruled out the computer-stress factor, I've got faith in that Bruk knows enough to make a valid argument.

Then there are the UI benefits but as I said (and Bruk then also said in the following post) The fullscreen town screen could easily have the space to incorporate some of the adventure map UI elements like the mini-map.

In the end I still can't reason exactly why they wouldn't roll with fullscreen, I just want a valid reason, that's all.
Might make it a little easier to accept if I see the benefits.

My bet is that right now it's as bad as some of us expect it to be, so instead of dealing with the backlash for another 2 months, they are "hiding" it for the time being. I wouldn't be surprised to see that the first time we ever see it is during the Beta.
