Do they expect to have it finished by the time public beta-testing starts?
For the sake of argument that the stolen schedule was right and the public beta-test starts the 20th of april, so in about 3 weeks. May we expect to be able to work with the real deal?

I'm not expecting full screen, they've said too clearly that this won't happen. But we might have this in a patch or something, that's what I'm hoping for.

Town screens are ubiquitous with heroes. would be scandalous to remove them. at least thats how i feel.
But at least they should show us what they mean by town window so we can judge the real thing instead of speculating like we all are now.

That might be part of the final town window, the schematic building tab.
It's not as bad as I imagined it, but I'd prefer structures for icons rather then the units trained from them.
Lets see the tabs:
Town View -> Building -> Hiring -> Tavern -> Market Place.
Town view is obviously still there for the feel, might even be interactive, but similar to HV, you can preform all your actions via the menu.
I think I'm going to miss the full size model close-up on the right side of the screen, the menu will abstract it a little to much without graphical elements like that I think.
Similarly, an image of a structure you're about to build.
I know it serves no purpose other then making it look pretty, but I like graphical feedback and a little eye-candy.
Just because I'm fine with 8bit graphics on games from the stone-age doesn't mean I don't want something more then just icons to look at.
Overall though, I think I can live with it if it's the final incarnation, but I'm hoping for some improvements.

From the review that posted this picture:
Quote: Thus, maybe you’ve already realized that there were not so many options in the city interface, which, as usual, lacks too much. And not only because it is not intuitive, but also for being windowed like, contradictory in regards to the classic experience of old games. It is not a very logical thing to return to the 2D interface in order to avoid delays when entering cities, and finally make it through a window instead of full screen. In one hand, that kills a little the game immersion, and in the other it creates an unnecessary sense of embarrassment regarding the Adventure Map, which remained visible behind the interface. In spite of this, I hope and trust that these aspects, as I stated earlier, still has some work left to do. But going back to the building options, as I said, they were limited to the Core creatures dwellings, city fortifications and defenses, the typical marketplace and tavern, and finally to a series of buildings designed to support the faction racial skill. And all of this was organized in a similar way to the heroes interface, which means levels or power steps defined by rows. Unfortunately, the limitation of available buildings with the help of the awful interface do not allow a clear glimpse of what was the factor which trigger the city leveling up, so whether improving defenses or whether raising the administrative city level (Town Hall, City Hall, etc), or maybe both.

This screenshots and the article make me hate the idea (whit every bit of new news the alpha vers. screenshot of a town window seams to be a nailed down thing) of having a Town Window even more ... I thought the notion of having a town window was depressing but now .. am down right disappointed ... hope some changes and improvement will be made to this "Town Window"

i don't want to go over and over again.,
but the thing is that i am really worried about town-screens
and it's hard to overestimate it's importance for HoMM game..
i mean poorly done town screen can kill the atmosphere and the feeling of what we love in Heroes game..
hope that the recent screenshots that we saw are just placeholders and the final image of town screens will be differnt as it is vital!

Yah. If this is indeed the town screen, I am disappointed. Even if they released a simple 2d Heroes III type of town screen with modern art/graphics style, that would be fine. But simply a screen with buy sliders and a tab for marketplace, buy, build, tavern etc... That would make me sad. As a long time heroes fan posting for one of the first times:
Please add a genuinely immersive town screen black hole.

The town atmosphere in previous games was absolutely charming and immersive and I loved it, but the crux of the displeasure seems to be this and this alone: It's not 100% full screen and you can see a bit of the adventure map in the background? Seriously, is that it?
Time to throw a big ol' spergy hissy fit and passionately announce that heroes is dead and that I'll never buy this awful awful abomination from those moneygrubbing monsters! This is a totally legitimate complaint and I'm on board with trying to get it changed, IF it is what we understand it to be. Some of y'all need to get a grip though, it'll be nicer if something can be worked out, but it's a drop in the bucket of things that could be right or wrong about the game.
The problem for developing it seems to be that 3d can increase resolution and 2d is a fixed resolution. There are two things I can personally think of that I would try if it were me. First is develop full screen 2d graphics for high resolution and scale down from there depending on resolution, leaving background landscape stuff at the edges to account for aspect ratio discrepancies. I'm not sure how well scaling works in such an environment, so backup is to develop high res 2d graphics with a big ol' edge of landscape and flavour that won't be displayed in lower resolutions. I'm coming at it like a web designer though and don't know a whole lot about developing video games.
Of course this is all academic and it could already be awesome and we totally misunderstood. For example, it could zoom into the on-the-map town models with cool extra animations and rad effects and stuff and have the window interface over the top of that. Unlikely with the information we have, but that would own.

For the town window:
I think that this is the final product, as it is the same on the Igromir video posted in Sep 2010.
This is the town window and won't change or be anything else.

There will be a town screen with animations on it and it will change when you build something. I know it sure. Somebody told me.

Yes, that has already been confirmed in this thread. There will be a visual representation of what you build in the town picture. We've also got confirmation that the artwork will not be interactive, all interaction happens through the menu. And it will definitely be a WINDOW (which really is the heart of the matter). All previews (both new and old) have has the same size of the screen, so I don't see why they suddenly would make it bigger either.

Because you were clicking on the city to build buildings and buy creatures in previous HoMM ? I was clicking on interface buttons.
