Aron said: You should certainly try Age of Wonders II and Elemental: Fallen Enchantress.
Probably AoW III as well but I haven't tried it so I don't know (still waiting for good news about AI and multiplayer).
There's alot more tactics in both games while still being very hero-dependent in map-exploration.
AOW I'm sure you know already a bit but here's FE:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBwZvhR5v5Y
I actually haven't played it since I payed for Elemental: War of Magic or what ever it was called. We who bought it after a certain date got scammed. They stoped patching it, it was bugged as hell and people who bought it earlier got a free FE. So I sorta boycotted Stardock for this series at least.
The old game was ALOT more complex...extremely interesting economics.
Thanks for sharing!! I strive to those kinds of recommendations, and in fact I've got some games bloodsucker recommended before, and I didn't go wrong with them.
That made me buy Age of Wonders 2 and Age of Wonders Shadow Magic at GoG.com , my favourite site for the PC:
http://www.gog.com/game/age_of_wonders_2_the_wizards_throne
http://www.gog.com/game/age_of_wonders_shadow_magic
I also got Elemental: Fallen Enchantress at GamersGate, thinking that I could get it without Steam. But when you get the game, it gives you a Steam activation code.
After watching the video, I liked the game a lot, and any game that reminds me of the game I love the most, Heroes of Might and Magic, is okay in my books.
The qualities of those games are indicative of Heroes of Might and Magic influence and hence they may be worth looking into...
Thanks for the suggestion, Aron. Gotta install Steam again. I am not the most supportive crowd of Steam, I gotta admit.
I have 12 games there, 13 including Elemental: Fallen Enchantress. That's why I thought that by purchasing it on GamersGate I'd get the installation files without Steam interfering, but no...
I had Steam uninstalled. When it comes to GoG I have almost 70 games, that's the difference.
I added the [url][ /url] to the video you shared, it's a pretty good video of Elemental: Fallen Enchantress. I subscribed to the guy after watching the video.

I dislike Steam too. It is an apple-store in disguise that while providing indie developers with oppurtunity also profits on them ruthlessly and dictates content while creating some of the worst contracts in the world from a consumer rights perspective such as that undersigned gives away the right to file a collective suite against Valve and that all proceedings should be done under a special corporate court that costs tons of money for any individual to go through.
Indeed this has been judged illegal by courts in Europe. So it doesn't apply to most of us But Americans as always are f00ked up the ass.
Still, it's a good service as these services come.

Didn't know about that, but it's good that the EU is there to regulate some anti-consumer measures.
I have found a workaround in order to have the game installation files in the HD and backup them. It's not like GoG -'cos you still need Steam- but it is just okay.
While on the main interface of Steam, right-clicking on one of your games brings up a list of options, and one of them says "Backup Game Files". By using this option you can choose where and how to compress your installation files.
It doesn't provide you with an EXE file, like when you use GoG, but a list of random name files, which means that you need the Steam client.
But while not as easy and straightforward as with GoG, it is better than nothing and it works.
I was about to write a post in regards to Age of Wonders and other games influenced by Heroes of Might and Magic, but it has some technical stuff in it, it might take time.
Talking of technicalities, starting today, Microsoft has dropped the support for Windows XP.
This photo used as a desktop photo for Windows XP is reckoned to be the most viewed picture of all time. And it is a photo of a real hill. Not from a part of Ireland or the portuguese Alentejo though.

Well, I've given some Heroes of Might and Magic like games, the ones Aron recommended --I tried others like Etherlords 1 and 2, Disciples 1 and 2, and King's Bounty -which I had already before discovering Heroes of Might and Magic <3 <3 <3 ,- . You can't go wrong with any of those and I play them from time to time, in between my Heroes of Might and Magic games.
There are definitely thousands people who have a better grasp than me at what those games are. But for any Heroes of Might and Magic game and the fellow forumers in our community, those games are plenty fun and take the best of the unique HoMM formula while trying original propositions.
The games Aron recommended are very good. Elemental: Fallen Enchantress and Age of Wonders series.
After some quick tests to get the mechanics of the game I gotta say I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Age of Wonders series.
Think of probably the best HoMM game of all time, which is Heroes of Might and Magic 3, imho (I actually love Heroes 5 as much as like H3 'cos it's like H3 but with 3D and extra possibilities and love Heroes 2, but I must admit none of them is so stable, game defining and solid as Heroes 3)
Since my own knowledge of how things were back at the time is woefully inadequate at best, I say this from an up to date perspective, but Heroes 3 seemed to always be a very solid game and design.
I read the original manual and you can see it was amazing from the get go, and how solidly designed it was.
Anyways, to get to the point. I purchased the entire Age of Wonders series at GoG -yes, even the freshly baked, straight from the oven Age of Wonders 3, released March 31st this year 2014-.
And I tested them out. I haven't tried AoW3 much, just wanted to get the graphics settings right. But I am not so very interested in it right now, and in fact I rather prefer to give the classic Age of Wonders games a try, and not AoW3 to be honest.
If someone knows similar games not listed here, I like recommendations I will listen to them, but I am not planning more Xbox One or PC games in quite a while, I have what I want for now and gotta spend money on other priorities. Just sayin'...
To get to the point, for Heroes of Might and Magic lovers, I think that Age of Wonders 2 and Age of Wonders Shadow Magic are just perfect games. (they cost about 6€ or so, at GoG)
Having played both the most, especially Age of Wonders 2, I think most HoMM fans would love it.
It has pseudo-3D graphics, like Heroes 3, and it accepts Direct3D acceleration by default. Plus, you can also play it in windowed mode, and this mode is built-in in the engine.
It's not very demanding on your PC, and it looks really beautiful in HD resolutions, with very detailed 3D terrains and effects.
In fact, it has the best windowed mode I've seen in a game, imho. That means that you can play in a small window and you can also maximize the window -highly advisable-, which is shown just like any other application running on your OS, like your internet browser.
Truly excellent stuff!
The main window is meant to be running at 800x600 minimised. Internally though, it seems to upscale according to your PC settings.
I found something very interesting in the registry entries of the game, which maybe helps to run the game internally at a much higher resolution.
For instance, my laptop's display accepts a maximum resolution of 1366x768, but the graphics card can run at max resolution of 2560x1600 -while relatively modern it's a rather average Intel graphics GPU, so nothing spectacular or fancy compared to nVidia or AMD-.
I set the game to 1366x768 in the registry, but maybe it would be interesting to change that and make it run internally at 2560x1600. I still have to try that.
Tou just have to go this Windows registry entry (remember that to run the registry editor you have to run a Windows executable and type regedit then press Enter)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Triumph Studios
When there, you just have to go to the subfolder Age of Wonders II and then Video ( Age of Wonders Shadow Magic / Video in the case of the Age of Wonder Shadow Magic game, both games use the same graphics engine!)
There are a few entries within the Video subfolder. One of them says "Display Width" and there is other which says "Display Height".
Display Width is usually set at 800. And Display Height is usually set at 600. This means that the game is set at 800x600 in windowed mode.
Double clicking on Display Width and Display Height lets you choose your own resolution (note that if you use the configuration utility the values return to 800x600, so set your preferences once and edit the registry afterwards).
To switch to 1920x1080, for instance, you have to set the Display Width to 1920 and the Display Height to 1080.
Important: To change the values of the Display Width and Display Height subfolders to any other value of your liking you have to tick the option which says Decimal (the hexadecimal values are quite different).
Once you switched to decimal, change 800 (default Display Width value) to whatever horizontal resolution you prefer -1366, 1280, 2560, 1600, 1920, etc-.
Same for the Display Height. 600 is the default value for the vertical resolution. Using the "decimal" option you can switch that value to your favourite vertical resolution, like 720, 1080, 900, etc etc.
This works for Age of Wonders 2 and Age of Wonders Shadow Magic.
Finally, regarding Age of Wonders Shadow Magic, there is a semi-official patch (version 1.4 as of currently, they ar working on the 1.5 version) created by former developers of the game and programmers who are modders which is amazing.
You can find the Age of Wonder Shadow Magic 1.4 patch here.

bloodsucker, Maurice, etc, have you ever tried or played Age of Wonders, especially Age of Wonder 2 and Age of Wonders Shadow Magic?
I genuinely think you would LOVE both games. I played the tutorial map of Age of Wonders 2...
...and the influence of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is so pronounced that when you see the woman with certain creatures waiting for you by the other side of the bridge at the very beginning you will feel familiar emotions!

I had a previous bought of AoW3 in Gog but I didn't really started yet. Just read some pages of the tome.
AoW2 I played just once, I got myself beaten because I didn't paid attention to the upkeeps. My extraordinary air force revolted and destroyed my tower. I got so made I never tryied it again until recently and this time I played for less then one hour.
I also have King's Bounty but what I tried recently was Disciples III Renaissance. Found the battle mode too similar between the three of them, didn't appreciate none of them too much.
I agree that everything else sucks but I still prefer to play Etherlords and have a decent fight then what I experienced from those games until this moment.
Maybe I have to start to play immediatly above easy but that seems strange to me, on the other hand I don't know nothing about the game but I'm winning every fight without losses!

I still have a copy of Age of Wonders laying around somewhere ... though if I would replay it, I'd probably just buy it on GOG and be sure that it's still playable on current day hardware . From what I recall, I wasn't overly impressed with the game at the time, so I skipped over Age of Wonders 2 as well. I admit that I have taken a look at Age of Wonders 3, but I have too little time to invest in it right now. As it is, I still have "Total War: Rome II" sitting on my PC unplayed, and that game was released november last year.

Definitely, you could fancy AoW2 despite your little experience with it, I think.
There are some neat touches in it, like the fact that ranged units can miss a hit sometimes depending not only on the opponent's defence but also the distance to the unit they are confronting.
It is also kinda cool that they show a dartboard's, bull's-eye like icon when you are shooting an arrow, or the trajectory of a boulder your Giants toss at a distant castle, town door or unit.
Besides that, the magic spells casted at a distance show a Stop (the typical traffic signal) like icon, with a number, probably a percentage showing what's your chance to hit the target.
The large battlefields are nice to play on.
Tactically wise I am not sure it's better than Heroes of Might and Magic though. It depends, but it's not as straightforward in that sense.
Units can block your path in the battlefield.
And I liked very much that, for instance, I had a Giant between two large rocks blocking the path in between and when I tried to move another Giant directly to the unit I wanted to confront, my giant had to go around the cliff.
BUT when I tried to move a Centaur in the exact same direction to confront an opponent's unit it had enough space to pass between the two rocks and my Giant, unlike the other Giant.
That was a very nice touch.
Overall though, Heroes of Might and Magic combat system is more direct and maybe tactical, but a mix between both styles would be great.
At which game are you winning every fight without losses?
Since you have Age of Wonder 3, here it is a nice user review I found, whose title mentions Heroes of Might and Magic:

Yes, it is. I have the full game -and the entire AoW series for that matter- and it is fully compatible with modern PCs.
The engine works pretty much like AoW2 and AoW Shadow Magic. That's to say, you can play the game at High Definition in windowed mode, and it has a borderless window. Plus the game adapts to any high resolution your GPU accepts.
The window works also like any other Windows program, which means that when you are using another program or appp the game is working in the background, and you can even hear the music sounding all the time. Nice music btw, especially Age of Wonders 2, very beautiful tunes.
The Glacier spell is fun as hell to use. It certainly brought me a smile when I used it.
I just completed the tutorial in Age of Wonders and Age of Wonders 2. I shall try the tutorial in Age of Wonders Shadow Magic next.
In regards to the spare time you have to play...I spend more time in the forums as of late than playing, so my playtime has been reduced quite drastically.
For instance, I purchased 15 Xbox One games ever since the console was launched, but just touched 2 in the end. I left 13 of them almost unplayed or barely played.
Basically, I focused on HoMM3 and Armaggedon's Blade campaign as of late and the tutorials of the Age of Wonders games.
Haven't touched the console since a couple of days ago, despite being a console gamer at heart -love the PC too, anyways-.
I also have like 70 GoG games now. Most eating dust, for now...
And any Heroes of Might and Magic like game I find ends up in my collection, and is played. I can't help but feel that you never go wrong with those, and I never disliked any of them.
The idea is to play them over time, calmly. First HoMM and then the others. I've become a lifelong fan of the genre.
There is another game I purchased 'cos of it's influence from HoMM, and that did appeal to me.
I mean, Eador: Genesis (2010) and Eador: Masters of the Broken World (2013). They can both be bought at a discount.
http://www.gog.com/game/eador_genesis
http://www.gog.com/game/eador_masters_of_the_broken_world
Eador series are good games overall. The little I tried them they were okay with me (not as good as Age of Wonders, but very fine). I have had a hard time running Eador: Genesis windowed though.
Even so, there is this amazing utility to run games in Windowed mode using borderless Windows.

The link to the files is broken in the original post of that thread, but they were re-uploaded here.

Given your style and what I can sense from your tastes in gaming, I think that Age of Wonders series would never fail to please you.

Aron said: Hehe 70 GoG games + others?
And I read somewhere you were young. Now I know prices are down from when I was young but damn ^.-
In the end I decided to count the games and I have 81 games I bought at GoG, a few Steam games, 15 Xbox One games, and I have close to 100 games on the Xbox 360, 3 Origin games, 10 ImpulseDriven (Gamestop online store) games but during the lifetime of the X360 I purchased like 200 games.
So I have enough games –some of them masterpieces- to play until I am 40, 50 and 60, 70 and 80. When I marry I could play the games with the wife, and so on.
I am not rich, Aron, far from it, in fact. Wouldn’t mind to live in the lap of luxury, I’d buy a Ferrari or a Porsche, but that’s not the case.
Many of the GoG games are cheaper ‘cos in Europe you pay in euros and they are priced in dollars. Then I got some games via promotions.
Even games like Fallout (which I didn’t play yet), was free for a time (got removed from GoG a few months ago), or Baldur’s Gate 2, The Temple of Elemental Evil, etc etc.
In addition, GoG has a big list of free games (those which are permanently free and others which are temporarily free –too bad I missed Master of Magic free promotion back in the day- : ( - games, and I’ve got all of them. You can get Master of Magic for 2,39$ (1.something euros these days)
They say Master of Magic was an inspiration for Age of Wonders and I read that the original creators of Master of Magic were successful with a Kickstarter and maybe this indicates that there will be a Master of Magic 2.
Anyways, this is the list of permanently free and temporarily free games at GoG.
http://www.gog.com/mix/free_games_temporarily_free_games
Finally, I recently got Bioshock Infinite –love Elisabeth- for the X360 because of an Xbox Live sales promotion, and that’s how I build my collection of games.

No worries, Maurice. Having Age of Wonders already –dunno about compatibility with current PCs though- you can play it in a second and give the goblins another whack. But I understand what you mean.
Right now I am playing very little but building up my collection of games. I am a person of phases –my siblings joke sometimes about the fact that I became a vegetarian for a week, didn’t like it, and moved on-, but then from those phases I pick up what I truly fancy and goes with my personality, with who I am, become very passionate about it (true fan style) and settle with it forever. –i.e. Heroes of Might and Magic-
That seldom happens, but when it happens it feels overwhelming and one obsesses over it.
Additionally, I’ve completed Age of Wonders Shadow Magic tutorial. It has the best tutorial of any classic Age of Wonders game to date (haven’t tried Age of Wonder 3 tutorial yet, if there is one). Age of Wonders 3.. I shall play it later more in detail.
The tutorial helps a lot because in the very beginning when it takes some time for you to learn and go from being a newbie to actually playing decently, with a good tutorial you begin to be a bit more strategic about what you do and use, and understand important things that might go unnoticed.
In fact with Age of Wonders Shadow Magic tutorial I think I’ve gotten the most important aspects of the entire series and its gameplay mechanics.
At this point I think I’d be ready to take on the main campaign of any Age of Wonders game and succeed.
Talking of strategy, there are things that I like about Heroes of Might and Magic that Age of Wonders doesn’t have and others where Age of Wonders adds a nice strategic touch.
For instance:
- I liked how you need to move units around in Age of Wonders.
- Instead of attacking in a straight line all the time so your ranged units can have a clear path towards the opponent’s units.
- If you don’t do that you risk damaging your own units with friendly fire by using your ranged troops because they are in the path. I lost a battle because of that, among other reasons.
- Also loved how you can reunite creatures and units and move them around the map, and place them surrounding the enemies’ village/city in the map. Then when you decide to attack the surrounding stacks of units will participate in the battle. hit friendly units in the path. Give them another whack.
- Clear influence from Age of Wonders in Heroes of Might and Magic IV.
- Age of Wonders is also heavily influenced from Heroes of Might and Magic 2 in the way the campaign let you choose your path (i.e. I decided to help the Dwarves and not let them face extinction). My favourite scenario of the campaign.
- Also a heavy influence from Heroes of Might and Magic in the way there is your typical map and underground levels. What makes AoW stands out is that you can interact with the underground levels using the Drill.
- Units gain experience.
- You can hide behind a rock.
- Using tactical can be fun. I stayed behind the walls and the enemy retired slowly when they realised they couldn’t breach the walls and there I was with my Halfling.
- A clear influence from HoMM in everything. AND HoMM people decided to copy them too in Heroes of Might and Magic IV. –the halflings throwing stones, etc-.
- It was better implemented in Age of Wonders.
- We will never know why they removed the halflings. To me one of the coolest creatures in Heroes of Might and Magic 2.
- In Age of Wonders I lived one of the funniest moments ever in a videogame (a noobie moment, too) , the CPU attacked a walled city of mine, with ONLY an archer inside, because it was confident as it had 2 bomber goblins... But the goblins didn't manage to break the wall, AND...
I began to shoot the enemies from behind the walls, safely. Then the CPU, without actual siege units decided to beat a hasty retreat. Lulz.
It was amazing seeing every single unit from the CPU (there were 2 stacks of units) take the way out of the battlefield.
Now that I know better, I'd leave the city well defended, but it was a noob moment that paid off.
- Units gain experience and get better if they survive and kill some foes. That’s a nice touch. Can you imagine something like that in HoMM?
- Nice touch too that the closer the enemies are the more times they hit –started in AoW 2- the opponent's units. A very smart touch if you ask me.
- In AoW3 the defensive stance works pretty much like Heroes of Might and Magic games. It just shows the big influence HoMM has had in the series. Always nice touches.
- There is a song in Age of Wonders 1 whose harmony is very similar to the famous “Somebody that I used to know” by gotye. Thing is… AoW 1 is from 1999, Somebody that I used to know is from recent times.
- Liked how some forests are in perfect condition and how others are on fire in Age of Wonders. Small, but neat touch.
- Units don’t get stuck in AoW when they are in the way, usually. Sometimes that's something that can break a set of moves and stuff like that, and one of my least favourites features of HoMM.
But nothing better than this thread to show how both Age of Wonders and Heroes of Might and Magic do compare.

Finally I saved a true jewel for last --this message is mostly a copy/paste from an email I sent to someone else.
The HoMM like gem of the 21st century is Eador: Genesis, in my opinion.
You can purchase it for 4,46€ (5,99$) at GoG, and in Steam too (4,99€). –-the price is better at GoG ‘cos they implement the true currency exchange rate in their prices and their prices are based on the American price.
This game has a sequel from last year, called Eador: Masters of the Broken World. Which is like Eador: Genesis but with 3D support and plays as greatly as its predecessor, but Eador: Genesis was the first. I have both games and I am content with them.
Taking the HoMM formula to its peak, it is the pinnacle of a Chess game in a turn based strategy game, in my opinion. A classic, only that it is a game from 2010.
Thing is that like most turn based strategy games, the terrain plays a very big factor. But it does so in an unexplored, unique way, which makes this game completely original and one of a kind.
Here things like the elevation in the battlefield grid, or the different kinds of terrain make the game feel like when you move your pieces in chess, and some places are much better strategically than others.
For instance… Large hills and elevations are excellent as they improve your attack and defence ratings, plus your counterstrike.
Additionally, if you have Slingers (why did they remove them from other versions of Heroes of Might and Magic after HoMM 2 remains a mystery to me, they were one of my favourite units in HoMM 2) or Archers those elevations are amongst the better places for them to attack.
Not only elevations improve their attack rating but also their range!
As you can see in this photo of the battlefield --to the right, the archers and slingers are placed on hills. That gives them a better ranged shot.
BUT there is more to it. Forested areas with a LOT of trees help your defence against ranged attacks –(see where the mage with the blue robe is..., in the previous image )
There are too kinds of defence, against hand to hand attacks and against ranged attacks).
Defence doesn’t only represent the chance to decrease the damage that your units do receive but a higher defence decrease your chance of being hit.
Furthermore, the terrain plays a big role in how much units can move during a turn. So you can place your units behind a swamped area or behind an elevation (a hill=, because the hand to hand units of your opponent will take more time to get to you and waste more movement points when overcoming those obstacles.
This can give you some essential extra time to breathe and use you ranged units before they get to them and they are toast.
In that sense I can safely say that Eador: Genesis is the 21st century classic to me, and another discovery. –I found it by sheer chance using Bing and searching for games based on Heroes of Might and Magic and thought it would be crap at first-
For Heroes of Might and Magic fans, Eador: Genesis is like a dreamy version of Heroes of Might and Magic and some extra things HoMM series didn’t become yet. Plus, soooooooo fun, bigtime.

Dude O_o you really like that girl eh?
Anyway, thanks for that tip, it looks excellent. ¨
Btw! Free games on Gog, yes I've heard fo this!
How do I find out when they release quality titles for free?
I haven't tried Baldurus Gate yet (yes, yes...) and I'd like to over the summer for example. There's always piracy but meh, when it comes to things like this I'd rather pay. Although I'm not sure it's even going to the developers or even Interplay anymore... Which kinda does suck.
Still if they have some sort of deal with GoG i'd take that too.

If you have a GoG account they send you emails featuring deals and sales.
It's curious but with this week's deal you can buy Heroes of Might and Magic games (from 1 to 3 at 2,49$, which is like 1 euro and something)
http://www.gog.com/gamerumble
The sales can be found in gaming sites too, or in news searches.
As for Baldur's Gate 2, you can kind of reflect what kind of person are you in that game. For me a first result can be chaotic evil/chaotic good, etc. The second time you can get a chaotic neutral. I remember creating a character where the latter result was so me.
Never completed the game though, I lost the save file too. But I will play it fully some day, I think.

Did anyone mention Disciples 2 Gold already? Gog sells it for 10 Dollars, which is one hell of a deal, considering what you get for the money.

Well, reading your post and after bloodsucker recommendations I am kinda curious about it to give it a more in depth play, I played it less than an hour and purchased the game a month ago.
I wanted to edit my 2 previous posts. One of them is incomplete and mixed things up with what I wanted to tell to Maurice. *whacking goblins* I edited them in Microsoft Word Student 2013 and copy/pasted them here, but some things are randomly placed 'cos I didn't feel like giving more time to those thoughts.
In addition, I would like to tone down my hype surrounding Eador: Genesis, but again, I can't edit the post. It is an awesome game /probably the best Heroes like game of the 21st century, taking into account that Age of Wonders series began in 1999/ but anyways, Age of Wonders is just better overall //well, ?I didn't say otherwise before, just clearing things up.
On a final note, I wanted to edit those posts because I wanted to write them as fast as possible. If not, it can take me forever and ever to make a post on forums because first I type things out, then sometimes I re-read what I wrote a couple of times, changing everything around. I end up adding and removing whole paragraphs, and after a few minutes of editing, I get frustrated and leave things how they are. This results in me sounding like a total clod. I do mean well, and have a lot to say, it-s just that I don't want to be a total perfectionist and modify words, put my thoughts on a computer screen is complicated if I get into detail.
Not my style in forums, nowadays at least, it hasn't been always like that.
Hence the quicker I write and less re/reading the better to me, despite the fact that this also can lead to poorly written posts. Well, I hope you understand the mess, fellow forumers.

What do you think about Luna? Would you choose her for your main?
I mean, her speciallity can really be helpfull early game (specially if you have a well near your base town) but will be mostly of no use in the main fight.
Do you fill that the advantage of early levelling is enough to make her a top or is just an hero to forget after a while?
