I don't think I've actually ever seen a "black" darkelf anywhere.
Never heard of Drizzt Do'Urden?
Iirc. all Forgotten Realms dark elves are actually dark. When that's said, it actually makes sense for a race that lives under earth in caves to have white skin - but I guess a name like Cave Elves or Deep Elves would be more appropriate to describe them than Dark Elves.

I don't want to seem racist, but why are they called dark if they are paler than the common elves?

Yeah, D&D Drow(Dark) Elves are dark.

Because they live in darkness and it is only natural for someone who has never seen the sun to be rather pale.

Drows are actually unique clan of Wood/Sun/whatever Elves - they were already black before they betrey their kin and went underground. Or something like that, I don't remember details right now.

D'oh! I forgot about elderscroll darkelves as well. But they are not the cave dwelling kind either.
Is there any kind of pointless Ubi trivia concerning why they have pale skin or is it, as usual a warhammer ripoff thing?

Yes - pale skin is a result of Tuidhana's pact with Malassa.

Yes - pale skin is a result of Tuidhana's pact with Malassa.
Is that the case?
I've always gotten the implication it's just due to lack of sunlight, from living underground all the time.

so does anyone know the behind the scenes on why the legacy of the Dungeon was basically ignored to toss in random Dark Elves?
did Nival improvise that in their lust for strippers lol, or was it just another mandate of Erwin and Richard Dansky like those Sea Elves?

I couldn't tell you. I think only Marzhin might be able to.
Why the Legacy was ignored is simple. Because nearly all was, since they wanted to start something of their own.
Why Dark Elves? That could be Nival, in their "Warhammer-inspiration". It could be Erwan & Dansky. It could also be the marketing departement.

Many things were very much "inspired" by Warhammer in H5. They didn't get a warning from Games Workshop for nothing.

I gotcha, but I would actually say the Dungeon is the only faction in the original H5 where the main race simply ignores the series legacy
you would have a hard time disagreeing that the Haven, Necro, Academy, Sylvan and Inferno have the "right" races in spirit, (well if you're feeling really pedantic you can argue that the Kreegans are replaced by Demons I guess lol), but the Dark Elves are just way out of left field for that faction, IMO

I agree.
But Fortress and Sanctuary were created from scratch.
And Stronghold went from an Ogre focus to an Orc focus.
But I agree insofar as the 5 others.

Race question for H5 Dungeon could have been effortlessly and consistently answered with Minotaurs.
I guess Nival was somewhat infatuated with WH, since they really copied the WH Dark Elves.

A Minotaur faction would have been awesome! I suppose once we move past the events of Dark Messiah it may be possible to make new factions, but a lot of the Minotaur history has similar themes to the Orc history so I don't see it happening.
