As evening crept in, Elena decided to put her plan into motion and got a couple of mercs with her, carrying several barrels towards the designated spot for practice. With about ten of them standing around, she looked through them and noted three were filled with water and divided it up between them. Francis would not expect her plan. Just to be certain they'd be available when time came she also hid one of them by the archery targets.
content with her work she set out to find John or Isabella.

Dragomir greeted the two nobles, and offered to sit nearby the captain's wagon, and offered them food. After brief introductions, Drago listened to their brief explanation of the ongoing problems.
- Just as I feared. with his grace preocupied with the wellbeing of his last remaining offspring the lords are duking it out amongst themselves with petty pretexts. Not very good.- He took a sip from his horn.
- One think though. Both Guinerve and Francis are bound for the service of the Brotherhood. which means their responsibilities as nobles are no longer their problem. We can help you take down the usurper, which already attacked us with undead knights errant, but from that point on my lords, you'll be on your own.

John was there to listen to the conversation with the nobles, but once the initial debriefing ended, he lost interest and went to sit by himself and think over the day's happenings. It was then that Elena has found him.

"A prank? I suppose it would depend on the kind of prank. Francis has a lot on his plate at the moment. I wouldn't want to hurt him further. But I'd love to liven him up a bit, if that's what you had in mind."

"Just messing with the duel a bit. He's too smug about that so I've put some barrels with water around the training grounds. I think it would liven the match up a bit if one or two would happen to tip over while we fight. That way I can give him some cold feet."
She wasn't planning on anything substantial. All she needed was to slow or have him trip. Just enough to win and avoid any gloating which otherwise would be inevitable.

After the dinner was finished, Dragomir addressed the brothers of Francis.
- So my lords.- he began as he lit up his pipe- do you have any plan to rid this duchy of it's undead pestilence and the usurper duchess, other than lurking in a swamp? The brotherhood can provide a few means to an end, a Samann mage hunter included.

Dragomir laughed at the little verbal squabble and the mention of a bribe.
- Well, they're definetely your kin, there's no doubt about it- Drago said to Francis. He puffed out several clouds of smoke and continued speaking:
- My lords, you forget one essential thing. We are mercenaries. At the end of the day coin is what's important to us. Also we have little choice besides aiding your cause. In fact we have no other choice whatsoever. That's why we sought you out in the first place.- he paused.- So, this castle you speak of. Is it heavily manned? Out of capable siege weapons we have a cannon with no shot and a mage who studied at Sequat.

Adrian took the word again: -We don't have recent information, we sent some scouts some days ago, he should be returning tomorrow, if we're lucky... But, as we know, the castle isn't currently heavily garrisoned, and we have reason to believe that because we heard that an herald was passing through the land calling for every vassal of the lady to send a conspicuous contingent of troops for another one of her campaigns of conquest. We will have more certain information once the scouts return to us. Regarding the castle, it has two sets of walls and a central keep, our father didn't think of maintaining a moat, so that won't be a problem, there are also several secret entrances, our father would have wanted to use them to smuggle his treasures outside the walls in the case of sieges, and a good bunch of them aren't even known to the guards, as he feared that they could betray him.
The primary walls are pretty solid, they were built with cannons in mind, so they won't be able to be easily breached by that, but the second tier will be easier, as it was meant just as a separation wall, and could be easily broken by artillery shots.
Entering the central keep will be easy, as my father thought that nobody could reach that, and he was proven wrong when they captured the castle, we will only need to break the wooden doors, and we could easily overrun the interior guards.
We've also already sabotaged time and time again the supply lines of the castle, so we won't see too many well equipped soldiers, and my brother, even as an hostage in his own castle, has contributed in this effort. In fact, I have reason to believe that in the event of a siege our brother Marcus could take a group of his men and clear out part of the walls.-
Lucius then continued: -Let's not forget that Marcus is willing to collaborate, indeed, he stayed there only because he wouldn't accept defeat, and I doubt that he would go against us.-
Francis then finally took word: -Indeed, I could take with me Adrian and Lucius to Marcus and convince him to help us, I know all the passages in that castle, so it won't be a problem to reach his rooms...-

- Given of what you told me so far, the best course of action would be to divide our force. One portion would harrass the defenders on the walls, while another, well armed group would use those secret passages to capture the castle from within. Wouldn't be the first time we're employing such tactic anyway.

After they left for their tents Guinevre asked Francis: -So, where do I sleep?- -Well, you choose one of the tents and sleep there... like that one over there- -Hmmh. Where do you sleep?- -I sleep in my own personal tent, I payed that dearly in the old days of the war in the South...- -Wait, are you referring to that war in which the duke of Marioch was defending himself from the duke of Tarabelem?- -Indeed, I was promised some estates there, but alas, Tarabelem triumphed and I was cast out as I was part of the loyalists...- -I don't want to sleep with strangers...- -We could buy you a tent, but now it's obviously late for that...- -Why don't you let me sleep in your tent?- -*Ahem* That's not exactly a good idea...- -Why not?- -Sleeping in my tent has never been something appreciated... I... smell terribly of sweat when I sleep...- -Then why did you invite your brothers to sleep there?- -My brothers are my kin, we know that we all sweat terribly...- -I see... so there is nothing wrong if I go sleep in your tent if your brothers are there.- -They didn't accept, they have their own tent over yonder, so...- -I'm not going to sleep in some stranger's tent- Francis rolled his eyes: -Fine! Sleep there, I finally was able to strike a deal with a merchant for an actual travel bed, a bit difficult to set up, but still better than a bloody sleeping bag... I guess you could sleep on the bed, while I'll sleep in a sleeping bag on the ground... Again...-
-What, you didn't have that during the war?- -They attacked the camp and I had to use it as part of a barricade, that didn't work well enough, they broke my bed... Let's go...-
They reached the spot where Francis set up his tent, two quarters yellow and two red ones separated by a white stripe, he moved his possessions there and got out some sheets of wood, and started assembling them, while he was doing that he said: -I'm positive this time it will work properly, I've spent the last nights figuring this out and it should work.- Within half an hour he finished the bed, he put on some hay and said: -Well, it's good to go, you may lie on it now, take these covers.- He then placed a carpet under the bed, he placed some excess hay there and placed his own sleeping bag.
-Good night Guinevre, may you rest well.- -Good night to you too Francis...-.
"Finally some relax... wait a moment... she's in my tent... and I have catching up to do... That's what that rascal meant, CURSE YOU DRAGOMIR! wait, that's also why brothers were smirking... CURSE YOU LUCIUS! oh well, I do have a certain reputation after all... They'll be disappointed tomorrow, and for the first time in my life I don't care"

The next morning brought drizzle with it. A large tent was erected and a makeshift table was built.
Dragomir, along with a few others, Francis and his brothers included were listening to the report of the scout, who just returned from his mission.

-My lords, I bring both good and bad news: The castle is currently manned by a measly force of 500 troops, and currently the western breach has not been yet repaired, but the enemy has unleashed an host of undead soldiers against our garrisons in the northern part of your estates. Our men were forced to flee and we have lost one of our contigents. The remainder wasn't pursued but we think they may have discovered our positions near the eastern border. That is all I could discover...-

- five hundred- Drago said- less than I initially expected. Does the castle have any weapons like mangolins, balistae and the like in it's defences? Also, how big is that breach you speak of?- he asked the scout.

-The castle has some defense engines, but as we know they aren't functioning properly, since there has been a shortage of iron and wood in the region, and the lady has preferred to use them for weapons rather than for defending the castles.
The breach has been slowly repaired, so it's smaller than before, but it's still big enough to allow a small group of horsemen to enter there.-
