"Well... you know how we don't really see eye to eye on the subject of... prisoner treatment? Now, I understand that ours is a messy business and mercy can get us into trouble and anyway you're the captain so I'll always follow your orders, but... Well, Dragomir, it's the militia men. Why are they in the dungeons? They are just peasants and workers conscripted in a time of need. I can understand that you would not want them around you, but where is the harm in simply disbanding them? I'm sure they just want to get back to their lives. There is no reason for those people to pay for the foolishness of their lord."

To my knowledge, they're kept in the top levels of the dungeons, where there is no moisture and a bit of light as well. The militia men will be released shortly after we depart. Such are the laws in this duchy. Many of the serf uprisings that happened here were quelled this way. Ringleader killed, and his underlings are sent for a little cool down in the dungeons. After a little diet of bread and water, they're allowed to return to the community. To serve in another lordling's militia perhaps, or to tend the vast orchards and vineyards that you see around the city.- Dragomir paused to inhale the tobacco smoke.
- North Shandra is... well more forgiving than the rest of the duchies. The militia men have a time to think and make amends, where in in other places of this world they'd be put to gallows. or forced to wrestle a half starved bear. There is nothing to worry about. And they're disbanded from the service of this House as well. They'll be free to do whatever they want. Even though there's only a small number of guardsmen and the entire army of this place is about two hundred knights, there is less crime than in any other place I know. Even more now, as I think Magnus's finds at the secret chamber within the librarium will put an end to one of the biggest smuggling rings in this part of the realm. Would there be anything else?

John's nervousness slowly changed into embarrassment as he listened to Drago's reply.
"No... I... thank you for putting my mind at ease."
The half-giant stood up, nodded slightly but slowly and turned to leave when suddenly he stopped.
"On yes, I nearly forgot. I kept looking through the books in the library after you left. There is a lot of information about ancient artifacts. Some books are obviously fairy tales, but others might be correct. It looks as if he tried to research the origins of your sword. My guess is that this is how he knew the location of all those Elvish artifacts mentioned in the ledgers."

- Really? That's very interesting. The blade is not of elven origin itself, it was forged by a human. The enchantments on the other hand... Those are the mystery. Elven blades were light, nimble and most often forged with sorcery, wherein this sword was forged by normal means, and enchanted later. But thank you for informing me. I had my suspicion that my uncle went into the North. Rumors have it there are still unlooted elven ruins. I'll be sure to review these tomes thoroughly.

For what maybe was the first time in his life Francis insisted on sleeping in his tent, something that he usually loathed.
As was now the norm Guinevre shared the tent with him as she always preferred to stay as far as she could from the lower men in the company, "Just as a precaution..." she used to say to Francis when he complained about the obvious violation of the aristocratic values. And "As a precaution..." as he used to say, he always made her sleep in another bed, even if after he returned home he commissioned a double bed that could be easily transported and could accomodate her there.
For him it was always an important ritual to set up his tent in aneat fashion and asked some of the men to help him prepare the tent.
Unbeknownst to everybody he actually brought in a bottle of wine, he poured some of it in a cup and in the most dramatic fashion he could he went to the exit of his tent and said: -Alas! The burden of my birth hath been placed again on my back! Indeed it will be another occasion to prove my worth.- Guinevre was in the meantime seated on the bed and said: -It's not the time to be dramatic, I'd like to get myself ready for the night!- Francis replied: -Of course my fair lady, or course...- he chuckled, then said:- Actually I wanted to ask you, since Lord Dragomir has asked me to find propr replacements for the serfs of this manor, could you help me? We could do a better job together.- She replied: -Of course, was there need to ask? Now go and close the tent!- -Immediately milady...- he said as hengot out and closed the curtains.

Dragomir sat behind the desk as John walked out. He was a good man, and Drago thought he should find a tailor to make John some new clothes. It seemed a good idea, because in front of the Brotherhood lied the vast undiscovered North.
He poured some cognac from the decanter which was sitting on the desk along with many unsealed letters, addressed to the noble houses of North Shandra. Dragomir picked up one. It requested the other houses to unite and strike against the Brotherhood, and reclaim the sword stolen from House Sapell. It requested troops and monetary support to hie more sellswords.
Dragomir reviewed the pile. All of the Houses were here, which means no letters were sent.
Without much thought, Dragomir showed the pile of parchment into the fireplace.
He took a sip from the silver goblet, and puffed his pipe.
Meanwhile almost everyone in the company were present at the main dining hall. there were enough space for at least twice the numbers in it. Magnus and Allikha were engaged in a friendly arm wrestling contest, with many spectators cheering for either the dwarf or the orc. After a bit of a struggle, Magnus was able to defeat the arms-master.
- I'll get you next time- Allikha said.
- Aye. Now had me my thirty talars lad.- The dwarf responded.
The orc smiled, and counted off thirty gold coins.
People around were eating and drinking, someone decided to break out a mandolin and played some songs reminiscent of the Company's glorious past and victories.
Despite the commodity of the manor, many more of the Company decided to remain in their tents. The guards posted received a mug of heated vine to help them stand the chills of North Shandran nights.
Dragomir joined briefly the feasting company, and after he finished his meal, he returned to the librarium, to review some of the books mentioned by John before retiring for the night.

- Drago will pay out the wages tommorow, I think, wait a bit more. A bet is a bet- He said as he raised his tankard to his lips. Few of the men remained, while the rest went to rest for the night.
Meanwhile, Dragomir was at the librarium, reading one of the tomes that John has mentioned. This particualr book was a tractate about ancient blades, both from the Golden and The Age of Heroes. The author of this manuscript pondered and theorised the very nature of these venerable enchanted weapons.
A decanter from the manor's study was present by Drago's side.

Isabella had left the feast when it became too "crowded", which for her was when more than a few people entered the dining hall, and went tot the librarium. She was in her own little heaven there, surrounded by books, and had not moved for hours. She had barely noticed Dragomir enter and would have probably have payed him no mind had she not noticed his decanter.
Feeling tad bit thirsty and looking at her empty cup in dismay she walked to Dragomir and tapped him on the back,"May I have some?", she said referencing the decanter.

- Sure- Drago said without lifting eyes from the book- Help yourself.- He said as he turned the page. The manuscript now described the many weapon enchantments known to the Amat Clan of Vendigr.
Dragomir browsed through the list, which went on for several pages.
There was nothing useful there however, just theories, and more theories.
Dragomir picked up another book, which was a collection of legends dating back to the Age of Heroes.

- Indeed. So far nothing of value had come up. The list of weapon enchantments known to the Amat Clan has nothing close to what my sword hides. But then again the amber embedded in it only glowed when danger was nearby. No such enchantment is listed in the Amat mages' catalogue.- Drago paused a bit to relight his pipe. As the cloud of tobacco smoke filled the librarium with it's mild scent of cherry, Drago continued.
- These legends are very cryptic, and it would take someone else to decipher it. They speak of spellweavers and magic smiths, as well as few of the Relics, even mentions the Malus of Alberich amongst them. But there is no way to know whether they're true or just myths. No mention of the sword's magic nature is found in the old tale of My ancestor, Slibneir The Red either. I guess, I'll just have to keep looking for something worthwhile. If nothings here, perhaps the march to the north will unravel the mystery of this blade.

- I have some business to take care of, mainly with the estate and the legitimacy of my own noble house. Then there is a friend of Elena who whishes to join us... So I'd say for about a week.- Drago said- I'll pay out the wages tomorrow, so none of you be bored while I conduct business. It'll also be wise to fill our supply wagons to the brim. The markets are plenty here. So in this week we'll all have something to do.

At the next morning a line formed, as the mercenaries had waited to get payed out. To each, Dragomir gave 150 talars to spend as they please. That should keep them occupied enough when not in practice. He also gave out some assignments to the members of the company. Mikolaj was responsible for filling up the food stocks, Isabella had to make sure that the medical supplies were full and buy extras amongst other things.
Magnus was responsible for renewing the metalware, and making sure there are enough spare parts in case a wagon needs repairing.
with that taken care of, Dragomir went out to the palace to fill in the required papers to legitimize his new noble house.
Once there Dragomir filled the required paperwork and chose the sigil of his House. the Sigil of House Dragonheart was a black dragon in a field of brass.
With that covered, Dragomir returned to the estate. after going through the wardrobes, and the stockpile he found many good quality fur cloaks and bolts of cloth amongst other things. They should come in handy. Taking some notes and some money out of the Manor's treasury Dragomir went into town to find a tailor.

As the day dawned there was some movement in Francis' tent, he started shuffling in his things to find some finer clothes.
-Are you sure you don't want to pass by the city to buy some new garments?- Guinevre said, noticing Francis' evident confusion, he answered: -I don't need to buy newer ones... Or so I think... I should still have the ones I was gifted at Navgrod... There they are!-
He didn't forget the suit he was given by his friends at Navgrod, the time he played the part as a wandering knight who fled for love, it was a black suit adorned with white floral trims and with white fur.
-You look like a lord!- Said Guinevre almost surprised to see him wearing that kind of clothes again.
-Am I not a knight milady? And now I can say that without knowing on the back of my head that I'm lying!- He said joyfully, he then continued: -It would probably be good if I actually made a new suit for me, one that bears my coat of arms instead of being a generic dress... But for now let's focus on our task, do you have any fancier clothes than your usual ones?- She answered: -I brought one from my castle! And indeed if you could please go out of the tent...- -Of course milady...-
After she was dressed she also got out of the tent wearing a long Persian indigo dress, adorned in white silk trims and flowers made of golden and silver threads, she also wore a silver pendant with a red gem.
-Well, my knight? Shall we go?- Said Guinevre -Yes, let's get our horses.- Answered Francis.
The two went first for a brief survey of the manor and then of the surrounding villages, then proceeded to search for the most eligible subjects for working at Dragomir's manor, as the lord demanded to completely "renew" the staff of the manor.
They first looked for the most humble jobs, so they looked for some clerks and some strong men to care for the stockpiles, as well as gardeners, farmers and maids, some stable workers and some blacksmiths, a small number of volunteers for the guard and other minor jobs.
When they felt they had filled an adequate number of jobs that didn't require particular training they went to the city to get some of the more educated men that were needed, so they went to look for some chefs, a librarian, some expert accountants as well as some scribes, and other jobs.
-So... I think we've covered everything that was needed...- Said Francis, Guinevre then said: -We didn't appoint an arms master though...- Francis answered: -Aye, but we need a trusted man for that job, my father always told me that you need to keep an eye on the servants and a closer look at the custodians. I say that for today we will return to Lord Dragomir's manor, and we will ask him an opinion regarding his choice of what should be the most trusted positions in one's estates. And anyway, for today finding an arms master isn't an urgent matter.-

Dragomir returned to the estate several hours later. He was a bit tired. But not dissapointed. He went to the study, but before that, called for Francis to meet him there.
Magnus completed the purchases. Spare wheels, various other metalwork and spare parts. The merchant's assistants were now hauling all the merchandise back to the estate. With that covered Magnus went to a tavern to wet his whistle.
