"I will do my best, I promise. I was going to ask some of you to spar with me, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I better get back to camp anyway."
John began to walk away, when one of the guardsmen called him to stop. He wasn't particularly big, but he still stood out amongst his fellow guards. It must have been the way he carried himself - with the confidence of one who survived more than a few battles and caution of one who knows just how lucky he is that he did. He carried the standard sword and shield of the guardsmen.
"We're not some fresh militia recruits, you know." The man said without malice, "we're proud soldiers of Lord Raddwil, defenders of Navgrod. We're not as frail as ye think."
"I meant no offense, sir. But I do not yet have full control of the modifications on my weapon. You saw what happened to that dummy."
"Yea, well I ain't no dummy. And I'll give ye a sparring, giant man, want it or not."
John looked around at the guards' faces. There was pride in their eyes. Leaving now would hurt them more than the blows he might deliver. He sighed in resignation.
"Alright. I just hope none of us regrets this."
"You might." The guard smiled and threw his shield on the ground, "that thing would do me no good against a club of that size."
The guard circling John cautiously, while the half-giant held his club in a defensive position in front of himself. The guard made an experimental lunge, was easily parried and quickly returned to his position.
"You're not used to fighting someone of my size, aren't you?" John asked as the man kept circling him, "You're keeping your distance as you should, but you forget that I have a longer reach!"
John swung his club in front of the guard. He meant for it to swing in front of his face to merely frighten the man, but to his surprise it wouldn't have connected even if he was trying to hit him. The guard ducked, quick as lightning, below the club and lunged at John stomach from below. John was still in mid swing and barely managed to step aside and push the man away from him.
"I 'aven't forgot your reach, giant, but I wasn't trying to avoid it," said the man coming back into his position, "I was keeping you in mine."
"So I see. I was indeed a fool to underestimate you. I will be more careful from now on."
The two traded a few experimental blows looking for a new opening until finally the guard decided to gamble and struck low. John block strike with the metal part of his club and swung it aside right away. The spikes caught the sword between them and while they could not throw it from the guard's hand, a they were never designed for this sort of thing, the force made the man lose balance and move his arms to the side in order to keep hold of his weapon. This left his front unguarded and John used the moment reach his enormous hand and engulf the man's head in it. He held it for a second then let go.
"I don't think there's a need to continue."
"Yes, a'ight, I'm not dumb. Your hand is big enough to take my head clean off if ye wanted."
"Still, it was a good fight. I got more than I bargained for, for certain. It was an honor sparring with you."
"Yea, I had fun myself."
John shook the man's hand, waved to the rest of them who already circled their champion and bombarded him with question and went back to camp. He saw Dragomir talking to Francis as he came back. Not wanting to interrupt, he stood not too far away and leaned on his club, waiting.

- Isabella will prepare some sort of halucinogen for us, and Elena will fabricate some projectiles for our hwacha. You seem to be pretty agile in your armor, I think it wouldn't be wise to ditch them on the engagement. even bronze weapons can make a nasty wounds.- Dragomir said to Francis.- We're won't be jumping naked in the nettles, that's for sure. Don't worry about your family, from what I heard from The Wolf, your Lord father would be most displeased upon seeing you. heh, and here I thought you were spurned by some lovely maiden.
Drago paused.
- Oh yea, Halfman said he wanted to give that amethyst pendant to you. you should see him before retiring for the night.
Dragomir noticed John waiting around.
- Did you need something John?- He asked.

John raised his weapon proudly displaying the new set of spikes.

- Sorry, my friend, I haven't seen Magnus since you two left for the smithy. He's probably still there, but I wouldn't advise on disturbing him while he's working. You know how he is.- Drago said.

Meanwhile, Magnus made last adjustments to the greaves for John. By now, he was sure that they will fit the leg's of the Half-Giant like a second skin. He moved on to the helmet. He forge welded the face and nose guards onto the scullcap, and beaten the red hot metal until he got the desired shape. The dwarf moved on to heat treat the helmet.
Magnus took a sip from his wineskin. The dwarf was sweating for all the work he did, on such short notice.

Francis was comforted by the notion that he could stay in his armor, and seemed to get more relaxed and confident, he would finally get a chance to fight armoured again.
"Thank you my lord, do not worry, I have no intention of abandoning you, my allegiance is with you now, as for the pendant I'll see Halfman, as you told me..."

- There is a band of ogres nearby. They are supposedly enthralled by a rogue wizard.- Dragomir said to John- We intend to take them down, after all the necessary preparations are made. I can't tell you more, because there isn't much to tell, until Zet returns with his findings. Now, if you're excuse me, I'm going to retire. I suggest you all do the same.
((I'm just gonna fast forward to tomorrow now, I hope no one minds))
The next morning, Dragomir went off to meet lord Raddwil. He found the old Duke of Trakonia breaking his fast.
- Ah, Lord Dragonheart, please, join me- The old lord gestured to sit near him. Dragomir did that.
- This is not about Mikolaj I presume?- He said after a cup was offered to Dragomir.
- No, nothing of that sort. Your son is fitting in nicely. we need all the men we can get now. there is something else.
- oh... I think I can guess it. it's those bloody band of Ogres, isn't it?
- Precisely, my lord- Drago took a sip from the cup.
- From the scouts that returned, we made that there isn't a big number of them. three dozen at the most. the brutes had settled in our plains, razed the grainfields and burned the few villages there were to the ground.
- Tell me you didn't engaged them in the open.- Drago said. The lord lowered his eyes.
- You did.- Drago sighed.
- We ain't used to fight them here- Lord Raddwil replied- It's usually the steelwall's dwarves' problem to deal with those buggers. If you fellas can get rid of them, I would be grateful. I'll give you as much talars, as your Half-giant weighs.
Dragomir whisteled.
- That's a generous reward indeed. my men are making the necessary preparations as we speak. I will send a runner to you, once the task is done.- Drago finished his drink.
- This mead is excellent- He said. Drago bowed his head slightly to the lord.
- Until then.- Drago left the hall of the palace.

as morning broke, MAgnus had finished all the necessary work for John's armor. he borrowed a mule pulled cart from the blacksmith, to haul the finished pieces back to camp. he covered them with a large piece of burlap, to hide the surprise helmet for John.
Once at camp, he found John.
- There it is big guy. your new armor pieces. guarantee to protect you from any vicious bugger that tries to get ye. Pull off the burlap, and see for yerself- He said with pride in his voice, and took a huge gulp from his wineskin.

Waking up Elena did her standard hour-long workout finishing as the sun started to filter into town. She went out to find Mikolaj whom she lightly kicked in his side. "Wake up, we're getting breakfast." He stammered something Elena didn't quite pick up so she didn't say anything, content with standing next to him as he got up.
Walking, bread in hand, Elena explained what needed to be don. "we have plenty of arrows so what we need is black powder and containers for them, preferably bamboo. Do you know where we might find any of these?" Mikolaj hadn't fully woken up yet, barely slugging along with Elena. "wha- uh i think i know where we can find some black powder. Over that way..." He pointed in a direction and Elena hurried him along.
Eventually finding the shop he was talking about after numerous wrong turns, Mikolaj was well awake and they got a hold of a sack of good quality powder for a reasonable price he was ordered to carry for "wasting time".
They brought it back to camp before venturing off and finding the rest half an hour later. Getting back to camp with a box filled with good casings, Elena went ahead and started teaching Nicolaj how to make these things after getting Blackbirds help making sure the smoke created would be thick and have shifting colours.
"...and you tie it to an arrow like this." Elena finished with a complete missile. "Ideally the arrow will get stuck in an ogre and this bit here-" she gestured at the end of the casing "- will detonate." They managed to produce about 30 of the things before Blackbird decided it was time for lunch.

"I hardly had time to thank you properly for my improved club, it is a tool of pure destruction by the way, and you're already bringing me more presents. You have my utmost gratitude, Magnus, I am honored to count you among my few friends." John took a deep bow (making sure he stands far enough from the dwarf so as not to tower over him as he does that), "now let's see those greaves you made me."
John took off the burlap in one dramatic motion.
"They are magnificent! The pattern is marvelous... but what is this? Magnus I think you put a horned helmet here by mistake as well..." John took the helmet out of the cart as he spoke and then realization dawned, "it's huge... it's made for my head, isn't it Magnus? You used the ingots to improve my club, make me a pair of greaves and this helmet... Magnus, it's... I..."
The half-giant closed his eyes, clasping the helmet firmly between his hands. After a few moments he opened his eyes again and with great deliberation put the horned helmet on his head. Then, silently, he took out the greaves from the cart and strapped them to his legs. Finally, he lifted his spiked club and rested it on his shoulder. The effect was uncanny. He changed from an almost savage looking behemoth into a towering warrior able to strike fear into the hearts of bravest of warriors.
In the spur of the moment he raised his club high in the air and shouted:
"I am called John the Giant! And I will lay waste to any man or monster who will make themselves an enemy of the Brotherhood of the Tattered Banner!"
His battlecry was followed by a loud cheer from all over the camp, as people watched in amazement their usually quiet comrade. Then John lowered his club and spoke to Magnus in a calmer and kinder voice:
"I have not been this grateful to any man since the old Wolf took me in as part of the Brotherhood and treated me as equal and not like a battering ram or some other tool of war. My only hope is that someday I will get the chance to return you a favor."

- Tis be nothin- Magnus said.- It was me pleasure to make 'em. Been a while since me hammer shaped something new, instead of repairing.
Magnus was happy for the Giant.
- and don't worry about them ingots, there's still plenty of them to go around. My clan makes the best dwarven steel. The helmet I made for ye used up only four ingots, and thirty talars. the smith didn't go any lower with the price of them antlers. Wear 'em proudly, that's the only thanks I need. ž The dwarf said.

Isabella had gotten up early to work on the brew for the potion. Enough of the potion would be done in a few hours to incapacitate around twenty ogres; though, not having real figures she would brew extra anyway. As she carried out the brewing procedures she batted around ideas of how to get the stuff in the ogres it would be most effective if given before the ogres are engaged.
"If we could get it on food of some kind it isn't like ogres cook much so it should not evaporate or better yet a stagnant water hole. Ugh, I need the lay of the land", she thought.
After she finished a few batches she went and found Dragomir."Dragomir do you know where Zet scampered off to?"

The day before Francis went to seek out Halfman, he was curious about the possibility of having actually identified something magical, that and the desire to have something to help him out...
He talked with the mage for a while, the mage had found an enchantment that could have been pretty useful in battle, the power to summon a shield that would protect the wearer from any damage, but at the price of unpredictability, the wearer wouldn't know when the shield would appear, as such he could only hope it appeared before a killing blow
At the dawn of the new day Francis decided to give his swords a good old hone, he wanted his attacks to be as deadly as possible, after a while he went to take some gunpowder for his pistol, so as to fight the monsters from a distance before charging, he could try to outrun an ogre, all he needed was something to distract them, maybe he could even aim for the head for a decapitating blow, if only he could reach them...
"I've got an idea! Let's see if Allikha can help me with this..."
He went to look for the arms-master to see if he could give him some advice on how to fight ogres.

- Why yes.- Dragomir said. He had just returned to camp from the palace, as well as made a little detour through the baker's shop, where he purchased a nice loaf of honey bread.
- I sent Zet on a scouting mission. He'll be away for a while. Is this about the ogre numbers? If so, I spoke with Lord Raddwil earlier today. according to his scouts there are at least three dozen of them . But I rather wait for Zet's report.- He said to Isabella.- Is there anything else you need of me?

"I'll wear them with pride." John answered as he took off the helmet and the greaves and placed them carefully near his chainmail. "And from what I hear I'll have a chance to try them out soon enough. On ogres no less. Haven't fought that many of them up until now. I suppose it will be something of a novelty to fight someone my size. Do you have any experience with the brutes?"

- Asking dwarf that is like asking if an orc has an expirience with fourhorns- Magnus said laughing joyfully- Of course I do. although not as much as an expirienced Ironbreaker would- Ironbreakers were the elite of dwarven army, usually the ones to defend the dwarven clan halls from the ogre menace- but I had a fair share of combat against them in my youth, back at the Clan.
Magnus paused to take a sip from his wineskin.
- but there ain't much advice I can give ye, that be usefull for a fella of yer size. We dwarves usually went for their legs. ye know, crow's beak in the knee and such. quite dangerous thing to do too, ye need to be quick on yer feet. at the best scenario, we shoot 'em, and finish off the ones that still breathe. Although I think with yer new weapon, you could just swipe one's head off in one swing.

- I would gladly train you in how to properly throw a javelin, if we had any. Magnus reforged the tips of the last few we had into fishing harpoons, which means they're useless as a weapon.- Allikha said. His direwolf was gnawing on a large bone.
- Instead I can teach you how to use a francisca properly. they're more compact than a stack of spears as well.
