@elvin
I agree that too few abilities is also bad, I was using our last heroes experience as parameter. Heroes 6 ended up with an unnecessary excess in some cases, imo.
I'm tending to go for the middle ground.

The archmage is a good example of a very versatile unit, I also like this. I think the problem is if we replicate this idea a lot we might end in a trap, with too many units overlapping roles, maybe doing too much of many things. But I might be wrong.
I'm not sure, in the past I used to think that, generally, the more abilities the better. :s

In a table of unit stats from beta, we had many units with a magic damage type, it have something to do with these active abilities?

If it isn't, then what's the impact of this damage type?

In the same vein, dragons should once again have their breath weapon as their default attack, not some activated ability...

it seems sylvan will have a cool synergy with leadership.

Nature's Revenge

I wonder if double shot will apply 1 or 2.

I agree with you here. Let's take for example H5 Archmagi, they had an AoE range attack, a single target direct damage spell and an AoE damage spell, on top of supportive spells. Talk about overlapping :/

That's why I think Archmagi (in H5 or future installments) should not have a range attack - with a wealthy spell book and high mana count (H4 style) there would be no need.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I'm just saying that some creatures should be spell casters instead of having an active ability that, in essence, is the same. It has nothing to do with damage types (that could be for another discussion).

Say Disciples would have a spell book (similar to H5, for example), Druids one focused on Earth and defensive spells, and so on.

Agreed.

Nah, you were very clear.
It's me and my curiosity to know if this damage type people saw in beta is just fluff or have any gameplay impact.

At least it looks decent. Unlike lamasu from H6. Among other things.

Going back to the sylvan discussion, is it known whether the druid has a default range attack, or has she only this one time only magic spell? And if she has a default range attack, what is the use of leaf daggers over this attack?

I've been thinking about what strategies will be good for the Sylvan line-up. And I have to say that I find it rather strange - we chose the "Fury" line up which was all about attack.

But from what I've seen, the best strategy with these units will be to just sit back and shoot. The Treants will protect all, the Dryad will protect the Treant and the Druid will slow down the enemies with the special ability. Even if you choose to play with the dragon, it is way too slow... And by the way, I don't see me choosing the dragon  EVER. What do you guys think? Is this line-up really a "Fury" line-up and is playing with the dragon just useless?

It matters for resistance. Cabirs were mostly useless against Fire Elementals, for instance.
