Euro 2016 France [Soccer]

A new big football tournament requires a new thread. The competition has started already with France vs. Romania, not the best game we’ve seen but almost all opening games are boring, charged with a lot of pressure on the players. This is the first Euro championship hosting 24 teams, format I really like, last used for WC USA 1994. Beside the first and second positioned teams in each group, the best four out of six third placed teams will advance as well to form the knock-out stage (round of 16). The drama for the third placed teams is full especially when the the points are equal and tie-breaker is the goal difference. One goal more or less may send you to R16 or home . There are cases when third placed team reaches the final (Argentina in WC’90 or Italy WC’94). More info about knock-out phase.

As I've said in the soccer thread, I don't expect much from Spain. It's a great selection of players, but I'm grown a distrust towards Del Bosque tactics and player choices.

France looked weak last night, Romania was in control of the ball for long periods of time, and if it wasn't for their awful defending on the first goal, they would had taken a draw. What a shame.

Edit: There is a surplus of idiots though.

It’s pity that the score between Albania – Switzerland was only 0-1. So many great opportunities were missed by both teams.

Looking at the Spain line-up I think you don’t have quality forwards, players who can make the difference in tough moments when you need one goal. Maybe Del Bosque made a mistake leaving Costa and Torres home instead of Nolito and Aduriz. Torres and Costa had poor season (Torres awakened at the end) but still I think they would do better job in difficult moments than the other two

Credit where is due, this list is much muuuch better than in the 2014 WC. A lot of the players who performed well this year had made it into it, I only miss Saúl in there. Actually, I disagree on Torres and Costa - the former only performed in a couple of matches thanks to el Cholo 'magic', while the latter is hasn't had a good season either, plus a lot of physical issues. Alcácer might be missed though...

I am more worried about which players will start though. Del Bosque is known for his stubbornness with fielding older players. We'll see.

I never suggested the contrary

Overall I feel Wales is playing to their strengths, but also lacking coordination at times, which has led to some serious defense slip ups. Can't fancy them holding their ground against the big teams, but they might just squeeze through to the playoffs.

Now they have screwed a couple of big counterattacks (2vs2 both times), can't be so forgiving against the big boys!

Yeah, they got lucky. Both teams made lots of mistakes but the game was good for the neutral fans. I didn't expect so open game.

Missed the Wales game. But the France v Romania game wasn't half bad. I mean they both were nervous but both of them gave a good fight. The Payet goal was a beauty though.
Not sure what to make of the Pogba hype. We'll see how he copes with the pressure.
I'm surprised that Sagna is part of the starting eleven. Good defender but can't deliver a decent cross if his life depended on it which is why I'm surprised one of his crosses has actually led to the Giroud goal.

England v Russia really seems like it's gonna end 0:0.

edit: 1:1
HA! England never fails to not disappoint. Classic.

Look kids, that's how you bottle a game. Stepping back after the goal was a critical mistake, allowing Russia to hold to an admittedly small hope.

Russia was so unispiring the whole game it almost feels unfair they snatched a point here. Almost. A lot of blame still lies on England side.

Wales at the top of the table, huh? What a time to be alive!

Croatia looked solid against Turkey but they are predictable because the constant crosses toward Mandzukic. If they don’t change this tactic I can’t see how they would beat some of the bigger teams

They won't. Spain will have a smooth ride, Croatia's "national" selection has been known to snap in high-profile matches for many years now, yet they take pride in easy victories against unimportant teams, such as the recent friendly 10-0 win against San Marino.

This team is comprised of "superstars" and members of the single team in the Croatian League (GNK Dinamo Zagreb) that intentionally monopolizes everything so much that the Croatian Football Association is their puppet (not exaggerating, scandals arise every now and then). The coach, Ante Èaèiæ, was "politically" chosen and hasn't had any real experience.
