Can't see either team going far in the tournament. I'm unimpressed.

In the Netherlands, it's called "voetbal", with "voet" being "foot" in English and "bal" obviously being "ball".
Never understood the origin of "soccer" .

It's FOOTBALL. There is also AMERICAN FOOTBALL.
We;;...no. It's known as the WORLD game for a reason and not just a game played in one specific country. I'm not getting into specifics though, the game is called Football in pretty much all English speaking countries barring the US and Australia (unless you're a football fan and call it its proper name). This discussion is for another thread though or you can pm about it if you really need because right now is the Euros and Austria....what the hell is even happening haha.

That's what I say, william. The game is called FOOTBALL everywhere in the worls, except in the US, where they call something ELSE football, that's why the rest of the worls had to change the name to soccer.
However, since it's about a European chmpionship and the Amricans are having THEIR continent competion now as well, we have the Copa America SOCCER championship, but the European FOOTBALL championship - so change the darn thread title already.
And, @ Maurice, no offense, but Netherlands? Who? I mean, we have ALBANIA taking part here, ICELAND, for frag's sake, even two teams from IRELAND - but Netherlands? Okay, you won your group in this years WC in Spain, coming up in front of host Spain, Belgium and Serbia, but that was in icehockey.

In Germany they still make a joke each day about Netherlands having an early vacation this year. Things like THE COMPLETE NETHERLANDS EM SCHEDULE - and then they show an empty page, albeit an orange one. Or a riddle - What country do we mean? And you see the following 5 pictograms: a tulip, a camper, a piece of cheese, a cheese-colored head with a sad expression and a football that's crossed out.
You know, this kind of simple bollocks.
Anyway, Portugal looks good so far.

Lol. It reminds me of a commercial that was on the Dutch TV two years ago with the World Championship in Brasil. There was a chance that the Netherlands would meet Germany in the finals.
The commercial showed a piece of meat (one word for meat in the Netherlands is "worst") to symbolize Germany and a piece of cheese (in the Netherlands called "kaas", which, with some imagination, sounds like "case") to symbolize the Netherlands. Combined it said that the Netherlands meeting Germany in the finals would be a "worst - case scenario" . Obviously, it was aimed at selling food for eating during the match.
In the end, we decided to spare Germany the humiliation though and left the title to them. So generous of us, don't you think?

You jinxed them
A lot of criticism could go to their forwards for not finishing clear chances, but the crux of the matter is Portugal looked completely lost after Iceland tied the score. Their players were too selfish and created less chances than in the first half.
The goal came from bad defending, again. Having a good coordination in the back line is proving to be a crutial element to succeed in this type of tournaments...fear Italy.
Portugal looked average today, can't see them going far playing like that.

Right, Frosty.
No, I think the reason for Portugal's decline in HT 2 is CR7. He played well, in HT 1, created that great chance for Nani - and that's it. He didn't play football with his mates HT 2, but was a dead end for the ball when he had it.
If he would put his abilities to more good use for his mates, Portugal would be much better.
Poly is obviously Hungarian.
I suppose, Iceland will be the problem in that group - I can easily imagine a Hungarian loss against Iceland. Also, I can imagine an Austrian win against Iceland...

Yeah, the Hungary-Iceland game can make or break everything, given Hungary's gguaranteed loss against Portugal... but guys, you don't get it. After this game they could forfeit the rest and nobody would care, because on top of miraculously qualifying - for the first international tourney of any kind in 30 years and for the first Euro in freaking 44 - they proceeded to work their @sses off and WIN. The pressure is off now, and they will be welcomed back as heroes NO MATTER WHAT. Nobody expected they would score a single point, never mind having 2 shots at going through to the round of 16. It's honestly WEIRD and AWESOME that they pulled even this much off

Austria-Hungary
Basically Hungarians were tactically better. You can’t imagine the sorrow of my colleagues (Austrians) after the final whistle… it lasted like 5 minutes.
Hungarians look motivated and I think they can reach at least 1/8 final.
Portugal – Iceland
Once again Portugal showed that weakness against so-called small teams. Ronaldo is not enough to solve all issues. Tactically they failed so they conceded goal almost from nowhere.
Quite a discussion about football vs. soccer. Everyone in Europe knows what means Euro 2016 that’s why I put in brackets “soccer” for our fellow members from N. America (to avoid it… just kidding). So no, I’m not gonna ask the mods to change the title.
@JJ please stop polluting my thread with the pedantic stuff!

Wouldn't exactly say that it is a foregone conclusion as to who will win that match. After all, Hungary beat Austria who have some really good players in their side and Iceland did keep Portugal to a draw. I'd say that Iceland are probably a little better than Hungary but nothing is guaranteed now. I could now see the exact same happening with Hungary trying to get on the counter, get a goal and defend for their lives.

No serious red-blooded European football enthusiast would call the game deliberately "soccer", mate. That's an eye-sore. It's like calling the toilet a "restroom", like you'd want to sleep it off in there, instead of just taking a quick leak.

Lol, there's discussion about a potential disqualification of the Russian team ... and that the Dutch team would be called upon to take their place .
I would consider that latter part very unlikely since the tournament is already underway, but still, I am curious what it would entail for the poule itself if Russia is expelled from the tournament.
