I checked this thread when I first started with ToE and found a lot of discussion about graphics cards. Here is some other information that I found by experimenting that might be more important than the graphics card:
1) Switch the mouse cursor to use a hardware cursor - software cursor was on by default when I installed and it was very slow.
2) Don't use underground on random maps - a map with more squares, but no underground often runs better than a smaller map with an underground. Maps that are only above ground often use monoliths/teleport so don't worry about getting only simple topologies.
3) The computer AI gets really slow when it starts to fight battles, so large games against many AI opponents are not practical on most hardware.
4) The game uses a lot of memory, so adding memory to the computer will reduce paging.
Its cheaper to see if any or all of the above address performance issues before getting a new graphics card, which may not turn out to be the problem.

Just got the game, and i'm having problems playing it. I can run the game just fine, choose town/hero/bonus fine also, but when the map is being created my HOMM5 stops working.
For custom maps it is stops working specifically at the end of the loading bar, for campaign it stops working at 50% of the loading bar.
I'm using vista.
I tried scouring the boards for problems with vista but there weren't any threads for troubleshooting except this.
Also, i noticed there wasn't a maps folder in the program files unlike HOMM3. Is something wrong?

There is a maps folder but you need to open the map editor first and load a standard map! Then the map Maps appears! Im using vista 2! Worked with me! But don't know how it's possible that ur game closes?
I encounter a blurry image that's like soo annooying!
And best off all I am doin a LAN one of these days and heroes is a must!

Hey, I have the same problem as Nekron on page 26.
I'm playing Hammer of Fate, when I create randomly generated map (1on1), after a while, one or two enemy heroes start lagging extremely badly, this happens mainly later in the game when they accumulate large amount of armies. When I kill him everything goes back to normal, but it's frustrating as sometimes it takes time to find that hero and turns can take 5-10 minutes(!!!).
Is there any solution to this? I don't think it's my PC, it's 4ghz core i7, 12gb ddr3 and GTX295.

haaalp!
I love designing custom maps. I recently made a huge, beautiful one. It took me damn near a month or two. Then, the map editor froze. Task Manager wouldn't work, so I turned the computer off and on again.
Now the map editor won't open the file.
It says: File may be corrupt, from an incompatible version, or loading from the wrong file. Since the last two aren't true... the freeze corrupted my file.
The file content wasn't erased though... it's still a hefty file. It just won't load.
I called Ubisoft, and they wouldn't do anything about it. Could someone out there help me out? If anyone knows anything about code... e-mail me at TitlesPending@gmail.com and I'll e-mail you the file. Maybe someone can tinker with it and fix what's wrong?
I'll name a town after you once I finish the beast!

Well I guess not but I hope you folks can help me out somehow, donno why its like that.
I got a
GeForce 9500M GS with 512 MB Ram with an
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4 G, and
4 GB Ram

d3dx9_25.dll
I think that maybe a growing number of Heroes V players using Windows 7 will have trouble starting the game because they are missing the d3dx9_25.dll file. I made a detailed post on this issue on Ubisoft's tech forum for Heroes V, and I am duplicating it here. If the moderator of this forum thinks this is inappropriate, please delete it.
1. Do a Web search for d3dx9_25.dll
2. You should get at least a couple of hits that direct you to a site where you can download the d3dx9_25.dll file.
2. To access d3dx9_25.dll from the downloaded file, you will probably need to unzip the file. Windows 7 does that automatically by simply double-clicking on the download. (I don't remember for sure, but I think that Windows XP and Windows Vista may also automatically unzip it.) Otherwise you'll need an application like WinZip to unzip it.
3. After opening up the downloaded file (that is, after unzipping it), highlight and copy the d3dx9_25.dll file. Then go to your Heroes of Might and Magic V folder. If you did the default installation, this file will be in your Ubisoft folder. If you have the Tribes of the East expansion installed, in addition to the Heroes of Might and Magic V folder your Ubisoft folder will also have a Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East folder.
4. In your Heroes of Might and Magic V folder(s), you will have at least one bin file. If you have the Hammers of Fate expansion installed, your Heroes of Might and Magic V folder will have a bin file and a bina1 file. Open up each of those bin files and paste the d3dx9_25.dll file that you have downloaded and copied. If you have Tribes of the East installed, your Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East folder will have a bin and a binDM file. Again, open each of those bin files and paste the d3dx9_25.dll file.
That's it. Your game should now start up.
Note: I have seen other forum posts regarding d3dx9_25.dll. I don't remember if I saw those posts here or in the forums at Celestial Heavens and Heroes Community. I do remember that those posts suggested that you simply install DirectX during the game's installation process. That will install the d3dx9_25.dll file in your Heroes of Might and Magic V bin folder(s). I did not want to do that, however, because I think I should have the most recent version of DirectX, which is DirectX 11, not DirectX 9.0c (installed by the game). You may run into trouble with other applications if you don't have the most recent version of DirectX. Also, I don't trust another poster's suggestion that it's okay to have two versions of DirectX installed.
You should install the most recent patches. As of this post, they are version 1.6 for Heroes of Might and Magic V, version 2.1 for Heroes of Might and Magic V - Hammers of Fate, and version 3.1 for Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East. I think you can get all those patches from the Ubisoft site. If not, check forums at Celestial Heavens and Heroes Community. Your version of the game can be seen by opening the game and proceeding to the main-menu screen. Check the corner. Warning!!! -- Be sure to install the correct regional version of the patch. As did I, you might think you need the US version when you actually need the EU (European) version. (See my other post, titled "Patches are not recognizing my installation of Heroes V."

Doing all of this search is, for nothing. As when it comes to Win7RC or Full retail.
Link up to the Microsoft website(Microsoft.com) then, the DirectX Link to its Download Page that indicates all dated, possible downloads available.
Download and Install the SDK version of the latest DirectX's downloadable package. Use Run to let the Microsoft Installer do the work for you.
From there, only install the Stand-Alone version 3.0 of HoMM5:T.o.t.E(The only true Vista-6 and Win7's full compatibility signed one). Use the included Upgrader feature program to use as an automated seek and identify the proper patch to be downloaded and auto-install as a final result(Cable or Wireless broadband connection is highly recommended). I should know, that's what I did for the past two(2) years or, more.
Furthermore, install a recent Mod called "Tales of Karador" is, quite recommended by myself. It brought way more changes to the game as, it renews the game up-to Summer-Fall of 2008(you will see those changes as you play by using the RMG a often as every day of the week for at least a month or so).
Please note, though: A video card supporting DX9.x and DX10.x is quite obligatory(way passed the recommended levels). Higher than 512Mb type of PCI-E 16x card will result in incompatibily flashes, crashes and, quite possibly, the blue of black screen of death.
So, as you can see, Win7 is quite a demanding O.S.. Graphics processing is a RAM and PSU drinker. When upgrading, ask yourself this: Does my PC case have, a 350watt and up PSU or, not? If yes, good for ya. If not, Win7 might not be for this smaller machine after all.
Hope that answers a lot of your everyday computing needs.
Here's the link for T.o.K. : Tales of Karador The Modification for experienced players That will lead you to the page where the Mediafire's link is currently located. The link for the older and official topic thread of Tales of Karador is, also, included.

Hey there, I've got a really stupid question which I can't seem to figure out on my own.
I haven't played HOMM since 3, and recently purchased V, but my issue is playing hotseat. Is there no possible way to actually select your race anymore past changing allies or positions? Or am I missing something entirely? Because I've always liked playing hotseat with my younger brother, being able to choose our races and be allied, but all of the maps seem to force either FFA, or 2v2v2(ect.), and you're fixed as to what race you are.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Then you have checked the wrong maps, a lot of possible maps in multiplayer and a lot more custom maps out there. I have some suggestions in the masterpost of questions FAQ sticky.

How would I go about randomly generating a map that would allow me to select races and still be something like 2v2v2v2.
Does that have something to do with the codes that can be put in for custom... can't remember what ti is, but there's an option for custom codes.
