Check out "Curios cheating guide" in the Modder's Workshop. I'm too lazy and tired to link it, but you're a smart guy, I'm sure you'll find it. There's also a very extensive section on AOH that explains it. I got it to work, so I'm positive that you'll get to it.

do i understand correctly..
do you need to fill out 4 sections of the skill tree to get Arcane Omniscience?
you need to get:
Section - Skill - # of skills to reach
Summoning - Wall of Fog - 4
Sorcery - Erratica Mana - 4
Attacks - Cold Steel - 4
Enlightenment - Graduate - 4
so even if all the skills generate perfect, the earliest you can achieve Arcane Omniscience is level 17??

No, that would be 29. From each skill you require 3 for expert plus 3 more to get the last ability(for instance archery->flaming arrows->cold steel) so 24 for your skills. Add 4 for expert artificer+mark of the wizard+magic mirror plus 1 more for arcane omniscience itself.
My advice is that it's best to try that at a campaign, not a multiplayer map. If you fail to get it it is a waste and until you get it you are left with a mediocre skill combination. Attack is offered at 2% of the lvl ups and you may be unlucky to be offered 2 unwanted abilities at the higer lvls.

i was under the impression that you didn't need magic mirror or wizard mark to get Arcane omniscience.
the skill wheel arrows also don't show needing MM or WM

It has come to my attention that this file has things you can change to:
My Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic V\Profiles\Profilename\user.cfg

Does anyone know if sorcery effects rain of arrows. A spell is being cast, but not really (its an ability). Anyone?

Nope, unfortunately Sorcery doesn't work with Rain of Arrows... the same goes for Deadeye Shot.
edit:
I've got a short question myself:
I haven't played the dwarfs very often... I was just wondering if the Shieldguards from the Guardpost can use runes like every other creature?
It would be logical, but if I think about Rune of Resurrection which can be refreshed...

They can and do use the runes like all the other dwarven creatures.

this is a really n00b question. but do you have the previous campains when you install hammers of fate or do you get all new ones?
EDIT: also, could someone please direct me to the downloads for pathes 1.4 and 1.41?

Sorry mistake! You didn't mention what version you have. If you are us then obviously the second but you won't be able to install the wrong version in any case.

No, I mean that depending from where you are from you may with to use the eu, us, rus, asian etc patch. For instance I got my game in Greece so I apply the eu version. Someone had mentioned a way to find your game version if you are not sure but I forget...
In any case as you said go for 1.4, then 1.41 and finally 1.5. The original 1.0 game is badly balanced and riddled with bugs, it just begs to be patched
