Quote: About magmas, the best way to kill them is to ignore them, and when time is right, teleport the marksmen near them and kill them all in one blow. Paladins charging aren't the best solution, they will kill themselves at magma shield. It's hard to get the hero next to marksmen at ATB bar, though, so you may try waiting, or such..
Shieldguards with ingvar, battle frenzy, necklece and runes of berserk/battlerage are actually quite powerful, and immune to jousting (shield wall.), but battle dive owns them completely.
Teleporting marksman is not that easy because precise shot immune shieldguards will break through troops around marksman easily. Then they will hit marksman and problem is solved.
Paladins charging can be the best solution because fireshield can be resisted - luck dependant.
Teleporting marksman can solve magmas problem with good ATB but it's even more luck dependant.
Battle dive have to hit something to be effective so it's luck dependant too. And even if they are hit and just a few survives then stupid rune of resurrection is used.. So basically, haven troops eventually dies and fortress' just doesn't unless it's possible for haven to score sky high damage, which is simply not at some point because haven's troops dies "for good", and so does the possible damage they can deal..

Easy to say that, but try a game with fortress on an XL map, against a good Haven player...

Maps differ from each other..
XL rich -> haven owns
XL not that rich -> fortress owns
With not enough gold haven will lose vs sylvan or fortress late game.
Haven is not played because it's not that easy to be played. Guardian angel creeping is IMO easly the hardest thing to do properly in homm5.. And people just get frustrated by the mana and a poor elightenment chance. There is not much to be done about it and mass cleansing unfortunately requires a lot of mana.. so knight is, more often than not, a bad hero class.

The only map haven stands a chance is one single town with 7-8k income and above, where fortress has no where to spend their money
So far, only random xl offered such a map.
I'm just interested to know which haven hero would u use, skills and magic to learn ? Don't forget haven heroes has the worst creeping in this game, its near impossible to fight without losses with them in week1
Actually we can come into this chatroom to discuss more on heroes?

That only comes to show that Doomforge's right, and that no one has good skill with the faction...
And why discuss it in a chatroom? We're on forum...

That is the most disgusting thing about haven. Stupid knight can't really be used week 1(except Vittorio if he is not banned), unless someone feels comfortable with suiciding all archers/marksmen to be brought back by a guardian angel..
So, luck in tavern is the most decisive factor. A wizard with dark and light will own the map in no time. Once there are more troops, a knight can start fighting and he will eventually become a good main if enlightenment is offered.

What you're talking about here is theory, play more online games to understand more, and play more with fortress in particular.
I've had alot of games fortress versus haven vice versa, even with pendant of mastery, fighting ingvar or ebba usually, its absolutely hopeless in maps 2 towns and above, where both sides get to spend their money wisely.
I just feel fortress has not been exploited more since hof came out.
Instead of less skilled haven players, i think there's lesser skilled fortress players around
Even game i tried out fortress, they just get better and better!
That's it. I'm not commenting more.
I'm outta this theory orientated discussion

hey come back sq79 we have too much theorycrafting here anyway
what I meant was, pre-patch dougal was so easy and annoying that nobody wanted to play against him, and since he was a one trick pony (like deleb), ppl got bored of him quickly. And they moved to different things.
after the patch dougie become less potent, and the horrible haven creeping become a nuisance, especially after the game turning into rusher heaven (with all the warlocks and wizards running around).
And with the 1st exp, the dwarves appeared as better turtlers and better endgame wackos (runes), plus they were new, ppl didn't know how to counter them effectively, and did the mistake of letting the dwarven player activate too many runes easily.
Therafore, fortress replaced haven in XL maps as the new endgame king, although haven is still technically stroner.
Just my thoughts
I haven't played for a long time so I kinda dunno what are the new trends now, but from what I hear from you guys, haven can't really stop dungeon (early and mid), academy (early and mid), inferno (mid) and fortress (late), making it a fairly difficult castle to play.
Quintiple palas are fun, but myself, I have found even endgame haven weak to implo run rehire tactic, where I could annihilite a large number of paladins to play a more fair battle with my main.

Yes, and now comes TotE, which will probably (hopefully) push the balance a bit back to lie more appropriately in the middle between Might and Magic Heroes, so that Magic Heroes cannot be abused as much as they currently can.

My thoughts:
1. Rune of resurrection is plain overpowered.
2. Haven vs fortess is a lame match up because of 2 things:
-bears can go before paladins, which is an obvious disaster
-paladins can attack magmas and resist a fireshield

They're not overpowered. They just have runes which you need certain skills for and it uses up resources. Also it has preety low initiative in late game.

Yeah, right , try not to bump onto shackless in xl map , gl with that.
At the moment im 42/31 total win/loss ratio and i can easily say that 10 of my loses were when i was dungeon and my opp had shackless.

Why everyone keep saying that Fort. has low initiative, I think it's pretty decent: 9-11.
I have played a late game against fort. almost with every castle, currently I'm playing with the Inferno.
So far the results are:
Haven - Victory, surprise?
Sylvan - Close defeat.
Necropolis - A clear defeat.
Academy - A crushing defeat.
Dungeon - A miserably defeat, the battle lasted only few rounds.
Inferno - Yet to be seen.
I don't like mirror matches because I find them boring.
And I don't have TotE so I don't know how the Orcs stand against dwarves.
But yes, I think Fortress is owerpowered and the runes should be nerfed but not by adjusting the resource costs, that's lazy.

actually i think that all factions are balanced
there is no such a think called overpowered or stink in heroes...
every faction is good, and it's all about the one who plays it..

The thing is, different from other games the balancing of this game is all about timing. I mean, each race has its moment to shine, be it for Dungeon early game or Sylvan end-game, etc...
Or it is map dependant: on maps with lots of gold haven is king, lots of resources academy and dwarves are better...
So you cannot say that races are balanced neither can you say they are imbalanced... it all depends on the situation.
