The long-forgotten race: INFERNO!

Since the release of Tote, there were several discussions about rushing with dungeon, academy pwnage (considered to be the best faction in homm 5), barbarian tactics, overpowered sylvan army, tactits with necros and haven, powerful endgame with fortress, but almost nobody spoke about inferno(not taking into consideration some alternatives comparison, and deleb nerfing).

The reason for that is probably that inferno remained the weakest race in tote(despite some powerful alternatives and good changes), and I thought it would be good if someone posted a  longer thread with tips/tricks and advanced tactits with inferno.

Recently, I played some games with inferno, and I tried several different tactics, it would be good to discuss it with each other.

So let's start/revive a thread about inferno!

Anyone here who also wasted some precious time on inferno and want to prove that it can still pick up a fight vs. another races? I hope so

To be honest, if a game is released in both English and a Dutch version, I prefer getting the English one (being Dutch myself). It's my experience that stuff *always* gets lost in translation. And that's pretty general, it doesn't just count for games, but for TV series and movies as well. In the cases that I really need a translation, I'd prefer subtitles.

Unfortunately I dislike inferno's earlygame but it can be VERY fun later on. It is very strategical and the whole army works in unison to survive and do as much damage to the opponent

Especially in tote it is stronger but can't say I have much experience with it. My only complaint is that early you need to get warmachines or upgrade hellhounds. At first I thought that horned grunts were a nice compensation to building cerberi but guess what: Apart from the 2 sulfur cerberi cost just a little wood more and are far more effective. Nival did nothing about the extreme wood cost, I'd upgrade demons only if they were 5 wood.

If you get no warmachines(10% is good but unreliable) and have wood shortage you are seriously hurt with creeping or so I see it.

Yeah creeping is the main problem (since you have to manage skills/creatures/resources carefully), and that can be annoying(which can end up in that you quit the game and try other factions). Also, breaking stronger guards (in hourglass for instance) is quite hard with might-oriented factions (like inferno), but with gating they can gain an edge over other might factions like sylvan and orcs.

Maybe I'll post a thread tomorrow about inferno if you're interested.

Sure. Or you could continue the Inferno Insight. That said it's an old thread about HoF and some things have changed though the general principles and strategies are pretty similar.

The only thing that bothers me is when I played ToteGlass and tried to defeat the guards, I suffered heavy losses. I lost almost all of my 250 familiars, 50 grunts and firehounds, about 15-20 hell stallions, and 7 out of 17 arch devils. However, the pit spawns an seducers are survived (lost only 1 pit spawn. The main problem was fire shield and phoenixes, the elementals and DKs killed only familiars. I had the same problem with sylvan and haven too (paladin strikes to fire shield, shield kills 10 palas).Can anyone give me some advice or point out what I'm doing wrong? I need this info for the thread. Thanks!

I'm afraid I can't help much with hourglass as I have never played it and I dislike such maps. Where defeating good neutral stacks are concerned I'm limited to battle for honor where you can get 2nd town at week 2 and have to defeat lots/horde of archdevils by week 4.

Have not yet tried for tote but the key back then was dark/warmachines/attack(excruciating strike) but most of the job was with frenzy/mass slow and puppet. A few small demon stacks covered cerberi and succubi in the corner. Also you had to cover the demons with demon gates  while leaving room for hit&runs with cerberi.
I guess succubi seducers and firehounds should make things easier now but the chance to get puppet is 1/3 than half the time. At least there's vampirism that can help if you lose some firehounds.

I think this strategy, improved with Tote, since excruciating strike is easier to get and along with battle frenzy, it leads to flaming arrows, which is nice. On hourglass, I used the same tactic, I had deleb with:
exp gating,hellfire,mark
exp attack,tactics,sadly no other perks
exp defense,vitality
exp dark,no perks
exp war machines,triple ballista

The only problem was that elementals are immune to mind control, therefore dark is useless, so it seems to me now you can't avoid the losses. I tried BfH as well, and it is far easier to break on that map than in HG. Sadly there's no heritage of deleb for Tote yet, so I'll try some smaller, rushing maps, and see how it will perform. Anyways, thanks for the info!

No problem. One thing, heritage of Deleb DOES play in tote as all other maps - Though it's better to enable the new spells from the editor

Yeah, I knew that, and played on the map, but because of the lack of new spells I wouldn't draw conlusions. About the editor... well map making in h3 was quite fun, but I can't stand this editor(also it is a bit slow, since I'm playing on a low-end computer), so I didn't spend too much time with it(about 5 minutes). Well, if you could explain how to enable the spells (even in the faq topic) I would be grateful. I think I would find it, but I'm too lazy...

You go to view->map properties->spells and press check all. Btw this map had disabled phoenix

another bug - perhaps most of you know it by now - haven alternative upgrades cannot be trained up the tier - that is, for example, zealots cannot be turned into cavaliers. (i've 3.0)

Vampirism is a dark magic skill, but it should belong to the light magic skill because it emproves your units, like Light magic should do. Dark Magic skills weaken enemy`s units.

We don't know anything about that and there are some things that need to be addressed. The last few patches have been pretty satisfying in solving the majority of bugs and improving performance, I don't see why 3.1 will not continue the trend.

What are the single scenarios? and with what faction and heroes arw you playing with? I knew tthree and it's the one with Tieru, one with Agreal and one with Konyak. But what is the rest?

Ex: temptation(it's impossible to find out whith only the name that it is a academy scenario with Zehir):Academy with Zehir.
