@TheDeath: OMG, I hate Chemistry...
(Stupid molecule synthesis project)
Anyways, back on topic.
@Mvass: What Wolfsburg said, although Gram negative bacteria have less peptidoglycan than the Gram positives do.
And penicillin tends to be useless against Gram - as compared to Gram + bacteria, thanks to its mode of action.
So, on the subject of the Swine Flu, I haven't heard anything about it today.
Then again:
a) I haven't watched the news.
b) Being in the Natural Sciences department tends to imply that I would only hear about it if it became a real danger.
@Wolfsburg: Yeah, Microbiology is fascinating. I'm taking Clinical Bacteriology this semester, and it has been very insightful...although I'll concede TheDeath's point and admit that it's a hell of a lot of rote memorization.
Still, it's very interesting.

'Too late' to contain swine flu
A deadly swine flu virus first detected in Mexico can no longer be contained, a World Health Organization (WHO) official has said. WHO Assistant Director General Keiji Fukuda said countries should now focus on mitigating the effects of the virus.
The WHO has raised its alert level from three to four, two steps short of declaring a full pandemic. Level four means the virus is showing a sustained ability to pass from human to human, and is able to cause community-level outbreaks.
"What this can really be interpreted as is a significant step towards pandemic influenza. But also, it is a phase that says we are not there yet," Mr Fukuda said. "In other words, at this time we think we have taken a step in that direction, but a pandemic is not considered inevitable."
He said the virus had become too widespread to make containment a feasible option, and said countries must focus on trying to put measures in place to protect the population. He also stressed that the experts did not recommend closing borders or restricting travel. "With the virus being widespread... closing borders or restricting travel really has very little effects in stopping the movement of this virus," he said.

That is the latest from BBC, interesting to see what comes next.

C'est la vie.
I recommend you boost your immune system so you don't become a number.
And hope they discover the vaccine quickly...
(What? I'm totally serious here.)
For those of you who believe in the many conspiracy theories related to sickness...this is almost a self-fulfilling prophecy...won't tell you what's the last piece of the puzzle for it to fulfill.

Lets se:
*All infected got it around Mexico and northwards
*Its not spreading with the corn
*I live in the middle of the countryside
*Scandinaves go mostly Tyrkia, Greece, and around Spain when their not liking the cold weather
*All infected who got proper health care survived
Why should i even be scared?

Is that censorship I hear you advocating, for the benefit of the masses?
But to be honest, they are way too concerned about the spreading of the disease. They should at least inform well that it is not that deadly. Furthermore, it was just a matter of time.. dense population in Mexico, many live side by side the poultry and livestock. Add there bad hygiene and warm climate... it was just a matter of time before a new influenza virus evolves.

I will wait the end of this disease, even now it's only the start.I think most of the borders of the countries will be closed to prevent other people from diseased countries to bring this to the respective country.
Just a thing I don't understand about this disease. On the news,I've heard about this disease, and they say it's not from the pigs.So it's not a pig-disease,as most call it (it has no sense)

Well, you're right, but not completly.Let's say that someone which comes from a country which is highly diseased (like Mexico) will come to a country which isn't yet.It can happen for the respective person to disease a whole country just because he has let to enter it

That would be the Black Death.
This is the pig flue, the spread rate is heck alot weaker.

There is no justification. A very small group of infected can't possibly be a reason to close borders, such act has severe economical and cultural negative outcomes

@Seraphim - 86% of the viral H1N1 subtypes are nowadays shown to be resistant to Tamiflu in some studies. (Although it was sold like water during bird-flu "outbreak")
Speaking of which, exactly like with Bird-flu, WHO is spreading unecessary panic. I think they should YES mention there have been some cases of the disease, but also that the exact numbers are being studied and what should people do to minimize the spreading (avoiding agglomerations, take a break from work in case any flu-like symptoms appear, etc.
But no WHO person is in position of qualifying such a disease as not containable. Certainly not based on the actual case-strata. Thats the biggest pile of bullsheit ever. They use the word pandemic in every chance they get. AS IF WE HAVENT HEARD IT BEFORE (*A ringer sounds something vaguely similar to Bird-flu in the distance*).
Yeah right.
