It made the local newspaper today, under the headline:
Se cuaja una pandemia
(This is Spanish, in case you're wondering.)
That doesn't really translate literally, but essentially it means "The Start of a Pandemic".
So, the BBC news thingie was flawed and exaggerated?
Figures.
My tip (about boosting your immune system) still applies though.
In any case, it's a good practice in general. A healthy immune system is good for you.
@Wolfsburg: They haven't released any projections on the Swine Flu yet, have they?

Well technically Azagal, viruses mutate, not evolve (viruses are not living organisms).
What's going to happen with this virus is something I want to know myself. It could just as likely mutate into a less virulent (for humans at least) form, as it could mutate into a more dangerous form. Only time will tell.
I bet you all can't tell that I'm studying Microbiology?

Right now Pandemic is just a buzz word that sells newspapers and gets people to watch 'news at 11'. At least in this case. Just like 'killer bees' and 'avian flu' it may or may not ever be a problem. The media tends to blow things out of proportion.

No Mytical... I said that the WHO (World Health Organisation) said that they lost controle of it. It's not a media buzz or all of that other "the state what to scare you into submission"-stuff. This is real. It's not like the killerbees that never came or the big computerfail at the year 2000. This is very real.
Oh and I actually ment the "situation" instead of the viruses. Since biology is my major I do know they mutate.

That was debatable ten years ago
Lack of metabolism would classify viruses as not live
Constant "self-perfecting" would classify them as alive
I don't have newer books so if they finally agreed on something, let me know.

One thing doesnt necessarily excludes the other, Azagal. WHO has made wrong predictions before and thats exactly my point. Bird-flu was also appointed by WHO as "the next pandemic".
As Winterfate has pointed out, viruses mutate, and not rarely back to a less virulent subtype. At this early stage WHO can simply not point it out as uncontainable pandemic. This is speculation, not science. They do not have the evidence necessary to back up that argument. Period. It is not maths. One cannot simply make an estimative about its progression and believe its going to be like that. Its just a shame to see them playing the magic oracle.

Not that I know of, no. But Im perhaps not the best source on the moment. With the current mass hysteria I just canīt take regular media seriously.

Some kid at a chicago public school has been 'possibly afflicted' with swine flu and is currently being evaluated by the CDC. With the amount of hysterical attention paid to the case by the media, you'd think the kid had been diagnosed with Ebola.

What do you mean "speculation, not science"? They said they can't contain it, so they predicted that it's going to be the next pandemic. Until we see the data (i.e wait), we cannot classify it in any way.

I live in mexico... the problem is not that big... I mean all the people are scared... and those people that have died are because they missing the information... they think they suffer from a common flu... so they decide to take the medecines they think will work... the medicines obviusly dont work... then they lose defenses... and then they get neumonia... at this point is when they decide to go the doctor... that's why so many people have died... but everyone who recieve the medicine beat the dissease in few hours/days...

What do you mean "speculation, not science"?
What Im saying is: viruses are too unpredictable for us to go making projections about their spreading in such a short time. Corribus brought for instance the name of a real nasty virus to the discussion.
Ebola: together with Marburg those are among the most virulent viruses know to mankind, Marburg with recent mortality rates varying from 80-90 percent, and Ebola not much less (57 - 88%). So when the first outbreaks started terrorizing Zaire and Congo, their obscene mortality rate caused them to reach notoriety in no time. Many scientist have made terrifying projections for the future of Africa and mankind. Those two have even got themselves a couple of movies...
But, after a short while they were gone, just as fast as they arose. Years have gone by, while they were being slowly forgotten. And again, in 2000 and 2005 we have seen some "unpredicted" outbreaks. Again, with no cataclism in the dark-continent. No widespread misery.
Dont get me wrong here. I do have great appreciation for epidemiologists, sanitarists and the like. I think their work is of unpeakable value. And I do acknowledge we can make quite concrete estimatives on Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Meningitis, Oncoceriasis and the like. But I be dammed if you can predict viral behavior after a couple weeks of experience.
Quote: They said they can't contain it, so they predicted that it's going to be the next pandemic. Until we see the data (i.e wait), we cannot classify it in any way.
Exactly because we cannot "classify it" I think its speculation to point it out as the next-pandemic.

While the hysteria does seem to be way out of control, it's not really a laughing matter; people ARE dying.
I guess the whole thing with the WHO raising the warning level can be justified by the fact that while you may be fine if you get treated the disease can still be spread fairly easily regardless of its mortality rate?

well its better for people to know. although on second thought people panic.
