Adrius dude it's a bloody flu. You get it, you get to the hospital, and you're cool in a week's time.

Don't panic.

From what I understand it's only dangerous to people whose organisms are already seriously weakened by other diseases. In other words, it's not much more dangerous than a regular flu, just much more contagious.

Lol normal flu kills A LOT MORE people...
I know a lot of people that already had it. Not dangerous. At all. -.-

Also its annoying when they for one week talked about it on every class and there were pictures "What to do if you become one of the INFECTED ONES" everywhere -.-

Problem is that some people say that the vaccine is more dangerous than the disease itself, stuff like it containing more quicksilver than normal or something.

Just to clear something up = vaccines do not contain quicksilver (elemental mercury).  Some vaccines contain thimerosol, an organomercury compound which is used as a preservative and which is metabolized in the body to form ethylmercury.  A lot of people think thimerosol is responsible for autism, but there's no reliable evidence to really suggest it and the rumors have for the most part been passed around by people with no medical or scientific background whatsoever.  There are also a lot of fears that thimerosol (or to be specific, it's metabolite, ethylmercury) is quite toxic; that perception is based on the fact that a related compound, methylmercury, is quite toxic.  However, methylmercury and ethylmercury have very different chemistry profiles, and, as it turns out, toxicology profiles, and initial estimates of the toxicity of thimerosol were probably greatly overstated - methylmercury, and not ethylmercury, were used for early risk assessments of thimerosol because data on ethylmercury were lacking.  Nevertheless, thimerosol has been removed from almost all childrens vaccines (at least in the US) and some adult vaccines.

I'm not sure if the flu vaccine contains thimerosol or not, but even if it does, you should know that there is no reliable evidence that it should be a source of concern.  Certainly I think it's foolish for parents to refuse vaccination of their children for deadly diseases out of such ignorance of the facts.  The flu vaccine is a little bit of a different matter because is has to be administered yearly and it is only partially effective, due to the variability of the flu virus.  I never get them because I'm young, healthy, am not around vulnerable people, and, more important, I've never gotten the flu; my opinion may change if I ever get it.   People who work in hospitals, elderly people, etc., should have the flu shot.  I don't see the need to subject myself to a shot and a possible side reaction for something which poses little risk to me.  Only you can make the decision, but I would base it more on whether you think you're likely to be exposed to the virus, or to expose other people who are susceptible to infection or death, rather than on any perceived safety risks.  Of course there are always risks to getting any vaccine (or any medication for that matter), but I don't see the risk associated with the flu shot to be any worse than any other vaccine; for myself, the potential benefits just aren't as great (as opposed to, say, HepA, measels, diptheria, etc.).

My two cents.

I mean ignorance.  As in, refusing to give your child a vaccine because Jenny McCarthy says vaccines cause autism; as in ignorance of basic principles of epidemiology (such as the distinction between prevalence of a disease and reported cases of a disease); as in ignorance of statistics; as in ignorance of chemistry and toxicology; as in ignorance of what the precautionary principle means; as in a willingness to believe anything one reads on the internet or sees on television and/or to see conspiracies where they probably don't exist.

Using again Jenny McCarthy as an example: JM observes that her son began exhibiting autistic symptoms around the same time he received his MMR vaccine, and leaps to the conclusion that the vaccine caused her son's austism (ignorance of statistics and epidemiology); she then appears on Oprah to talk about her book; Oprah's word is gospel to millions of ignorant women, and, through association, anyone who appears on Oprah's show is also infallable.  So now we have millions of ignorant women who also believe - without a shred of evidence, mind you - that a vaccine caused JM's son's autism, and then (ignorance of logic) conclude that vaccines are solely and generally responsible for autism.  Then she starts advocating chelation therapy as a treatment for autism, based on the supposition that the mercury in vaccines cause autism, even though the only formal training she has in anything is appearing in front of a camera with no clothes on.  Is she a doctor? No. Is she a chemist? No. Biologist? Epidemiologist? Statistician? Scientist of any kind? No. And when she appears on Larry King, or Oprah, or any of these other shows, are real scientists or medical researchers invited to provide, you know, actual facts or an opinion from an expert? Usually not, because that wouldn't sell.

The problem is that Jenny McCarthy is just another ignorant person who, because peoples' beliefs are on the whole ruled by emotions rather than logic and fact, has been able to convince millions of other ignorant people that a causal relationship exists even though there isn't a shred of evidence to prove it, and the irresponsible behavior of the omnipresent "news" shows provides the perfect conductive medium to transmit what boils down to nescient supersition with almost frightening effectiveness.  Need I mention the number of parents who now refuse to vaccinate their children for some of the most horrible diseases that have ever plagued mankind?  When I took my daughter to one of her first doctor vists, the doctor broached the subject of vaccination, and I could actually see the doctor holding her breath when she waited for our response.  Yes, it's become that much of a taboo subject.

Consider this additional amazing fact: some of these [idiots] people, deciding out of ignorance that thimerosal was responsible for their child's autism, subjected their child to dangerous chelation therapy (using a disingenous physician as a vector), which is not an FDA approved treatment for autism.  How these people managed to convince physicians to lie and say they were treating the children for lead poisoning is beyond me.  In some cases, parents have purchased unlicensed chelation therapeutics (probably over the internet) and administered them without the approval or recommendation of a physician.  So, these parents blindly claim (or blindly follow those who blindly claim) an unproven connection between autism and vaccines and then compound the lunacy by "treating" the autism using dangerous medication for which there is no evidence of efficacy.  Brilliant.

Where i live vaccins arent everywhere and are hard to get. Besides, you need a prescription from the dr to have one, at least here...due to the lack of vaccins you know. People dont care about this disease until someone they know gets it bad, i know a few cases already.

News.

My city is near the epicentrum of the epidemia. Townsmen were informed to stay at home for the next 2 hours with closed windows. The streets will be sprayed by some chemicals. I'm surprised and frightened.

Edit: When I was outside an hour ago I saw a lot of people wearing masks or wound with scarves.

Actually, if you are pregnant you should consult your doctor before taking the IA H1N1 vaccine. In Switzerland where I am current leaving at least, the right dosage and the use of stabilizers is still being heavily discussed.

And if you have severe immuno-compromising conditions or Multiple sclerosis you shouldn't do live vaccines AT ALL, unless the benefits LARGELY outweight the risks...

I think I had the flu last week. On my way home from NYC, there were a couple of guys sitting across the aisle from me who were coughing all 7 hours on the plane.

Sure enough, after we got home, I was down with fever and headache 3 days later. But now it's practically gone. Not sure how I'll find out if I really had that particular flu or just something else.
