I'm trying to get the feel for some more "traditional" brazilian music. Even though I don't like most of it, for it all sounds the same to me. And some stuff is just plain unbearable.

Listening to When A Man Loves A Woman right now.
A lot of my friends ask why do I listen to love songs all the time. My answer is that love is inherently a good, happy feeling. Of course, there's heartbreak and so on but love, in its purest form, is one of the strongest things this universe has to offer. Why wouldn't I want to listen to something that can bring feelings of happiness? This is only one song out of hundreds that I listen to that have to do with love but this song just hits me in a certain spot. It's hard to explain but it's surreal. A perfect song with describing love how it is, at least to me anyway.
Lately I've been listening to a lot of The Beach Boys. I like their songs about the California vibe back then and the surfing and girls and cars but it's not until Pet Sounds and the mental state of Brian Wilson to come that I get really intrigued and taken aback by everything he started doing after that.
For anyone familiar with Brian Wilson and what he went through in his head, it's a sad story. Constantly being rejected by your own father then turning to drugs and locking yourself away for a year or two and pretty much being a nothing...only to come back stronger than ever. It's a good story and I'm glad he's still around doing his thing every so often. The man, to me, is a genius.
There was a specific session that took place between Brian and his brother Dennis called 'The Cocaine Sessions' where Dennis had to coax Brian with Cocaine to get him to record and get him out of the state that he was in. I had just read most of what there was to know by Brian and the hardships he went through and there was a specific song called 'Oh Lord'...my god, that is the first time I have ever actually cried from a track before. It hit me in so many ways and then inspired me to try different things with my own music.
To be touched by a specific song is a most wonderful thing. It happens to me a bit but not in the profound way that that song hit me. It was unbelievable. I remember having a cigarette outside and hearing the track on my phone at about 3 am and it just hit me, especially when Dennis starts singing quite loudly and with the most passion I've heard from a singer in my life. It was so heartfelt and sincere with a hell of a lot of emotion behind it. It was definitely an eye opening to say the very least.
Through those bad times, that's then where I turn to love songs. It might not be accepted in a society such as ours, with many of my friends always commenting, but a feeling of love is a happy thing, a happy place to be. This world needs more love. More positivity.
For anyone remotely interested, I honestly recommend listening to soul music or even a lot of the classic rock from the 70s. The messages of love are almost blinding in some of those tracks and it always brings a smile to my face, even in the darkest of the days that I have.

My favorite Rock bands are also from the 1963-1973 era, after that, they usually start to lose touch with the roots I love so much, and when it comes to Soul, same thing, I dislike 90's style Soul music, I love 60's and early 70's Soul though.
Just a few weeks ago, I was watching the finale of Fargo's second season and heard a Soul version of California Dreamin', instantly loved and shazamed it. (The Beach Boys version is also good). Sounds like you may like it.

I can't stand anything from the 90s really bar a few songs here and there. 60s and 70s soul music is where it's at for me. There's nothing more pleasing than listening to a song and instantly getting touched by it because you can identify with it. With a lot of those tracks, I feel I can definitely hear what they are saying but that's because the theme is often love and who hasn't experienced that?

Sorry Galaad, but it is you who are confusing.
I post this here willingly. That thread is about listening to whatever music "at the moment", and will get deleted at some time. This one is a proper music thread that I use also to remember the artists.

Hey I have no problem with your views man, is just that I believe this thread was created for music discussion, and all you do here is post a one-liner with some songs links, what about telling us more about Syd Barret and Elvis?

I already made a post in this thread on 50's music, last page. and nobody replied.
I'm not going to waste time writing info on Elvis when no one else is interested.
But I can say a bit about Syd: he was the founding member of Pink Floyd, and the first lead singer and writer. His songs had a definite 60's psychedelic feel, and even after he left the band and they changed their "sound", which they did often, fans still remembered his style, and apparently so did the members. "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" were written with Syd in mind, and he even dropped by during a recording session, unexpected.
Syd also had a few solo albums, but he never went beyond the 60's psychedelic style that some say he made his own.

I don't disagree with you, and while I did like his style, it's obvious the band would not have changed much from their original psychedelic style if they continued under him. Gilmour and Waters along with Wright and Mason after him and their works are what made PF stand out. And you're right about the session.
I enjoy every Pink Floyd album, well, some obviously more than others, but I can't say there's somthing I really dislike. I am even fond of the post-Waters era. I appreciate the man, but he was too depressing most of the time.

In my opinion there is some point where Pink Floyd lost it. To me albums like Meddle or Music from the film More are much more like what reaches me in their music. With The Wall & Co, it's just so different, much more for the show. I always identified them more on the psychedelic journey rather than the more structured and "in your face" songs.

Meddle is still Roger Waters' Pink Floyd, not Syd Barret. Barret is a romantic figure of self-destruction, he has an appealing "creativity derived from madness" story but musically, Barret style Pink Floyd is not much different than any other psychedelic band of late 60's. Roger Waters is the main reason why the band is still remembered as something unique.
Although, I agree that The Wall is more like a solo, even biographical album with rest of the group functioning as studio musicians in the back.

I love Meddle, and artu is correct. And the Wall. Dark Side of the Moon is famous as well, almost like their logo, but it's never been really my favorite.
And I love me some Gilmour-Floyd too. Barrett-Floyd is good once in a while. Waters-Floyd is probably the most innovative, although I could do without some of his angst.
And tough to be pick a single favorite song...Echoes, Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, On The Turning Away come to mind.
And did I mention they're my number one band ?

Just a few weeks ago, I downloaded their first recordings.
I loved Lucy Leave, sounds a little like the Yardbirds, that British white boy blues has its own charm.

Ookay, does anyone want to discuss classical music? I'm only an apprentice, but the Strong side of music is much better than the tempting Light. Once I listened to Classical, I can not go back the same way.
