Raelag84 said: Seriously Elvin, is there anyway Ubisoft can use our suggestions without putting itself in legal trouble? We have some good ideas here.
Why would there be legal trouble? Are mythological units or Indian weapons trademarked? The dwarven berserkers in H5 wielded katar daggers and the H6 stalkers were chacram throwers.
The last time I suggested having a Garuda in the line up it didn't go so well.

(thanks to Derrick Song and Deviant art for the picture)
But if Ubisoft is really going with the Tibetan theme then it is not hard to imagine having a nest of Garuda high up in the mountains. Lore wise the Garuda would have an extremely tenuous relationship with its own Naga faction. It's risky to have a giant, predatory, eagle man in your ranks if your a group of snake people, but then that adds depth to the faction.
Besides, if the Naga are really about honor then they could have no better being their ranks then the Garuda, for the they were both fearsome and symbols of justice.
Gameplay wise the Garuda would be that one unit in the Nagan roster that has dropped subtlety for raw and swift attack power.
On that note is there anyway that I could convince Ubisoft to look further South for their inspiration? I mean as reptiles the Naga would prefer the tropics and so it might make sense to check out the ruins of Angkor Wat, or the old Hindu temples of Indonesia.

That looks awesome. That said..
Garuda is known as the eternal sworn enemy of the Nāga serpent race and known for feeding exclusively on snakes, such behavior may have referred to the actual Short-toed Eagle of India. The image of Garuda is often used as the charm or amulet to protect the bearer from snake attack and its poison, since the king of birds is an implacable enemy and "devourer of serpent".
That would be one hostile lineup ^^

I've done a little research myself actually, and it turns out there's more to these stories.
Garuda was born with a great hatred for the evil and he is supposed to roam about the universe devouring the bad, though he spares Brahmins as his parents had forbidden him to eat them
Though in some versions Garuda eats only snakes in others he eats all kinds of evil. In Ashan a Garuda could just as easily eat demons as he could snakes. Plus there's more.
Garuda is also well-known for his aversion to snakes, a dislike he had acquired from his mother, Vinata. There is a story behind this hatred of Garuda's mother. As it is quite interesting it is told hereafter.
Kashyap, Garuda's father, had two wives: Kadru, the elder, and Vinata, Garuda's mother, the younger. There was great rivalry between the two wives. They could not stand each other. Once, they had an argument over the color of the horse Uchchaisravas, produced during the Churning of the Ocean just after the time of creation. Each chose a color and laid a wager on her own choice. The one who lost would become the other's slave. Kadru proved to be right and, as part of the agreement, imprisoned Vinata in the nether regions, Patala, where she was guarded by serpents. The serpents are, according to another myth, the sons of Kadru herself.
In other words, the Garuda and Naga are sibling races. Even if they hate each other they belong together in a way that would make both races want to vomit.
There's also one other piece. It occurs to me that Naga had a civil war. Something about Dark Naga rebelling yes? I know the perfect warrior to crush that rebellion.

Indeed, when I saw the picture for the first time and didn't read the description, I thought that it is:
a) Some Demon of Tzeentch from Warhammer.
b) Some Academy creature that we heard about but never saw it.
Still, concept is quite good.

Seriously, Garuda are too dignified to be Academy's playthings. Also Garuda are not normally depicted with four arms, and don't normally look like something out of warhammer. I just picked that picture, because, it was well done.
My apologies for wasting everyone's time.

You're not wasting everyone's time. Some of us simply disagree.
I too find Garuda's to be more South-East Asian/Indian. And I also think that this somewhat clashes with the Sinno/Jappanese vibe Sanctuary's got going on nowadays.
That doesn't mean that Garudas are a bad Idea. Or that they will not fit in the future.

Nah, I was talking about Warhammer mostly because Greater Demons of Tzeentch look like huge Bird-like Demons.

It doesn't necessary look like that Demon, but association is there.

@Raelag 84: You're not wasting everyone's time...it's good to see variety of creatures for ideas...who knows maybe Ubisoft read our posts for ideas!
@RMZ: Nice creature: would be cool in an dungeon lineup! Like a troglodyte with wings.

Not to put salt in the wound, but I also think this would fit very nicely thematically with Academy, based solely on the looks of it in that artwork. It has very much the same vibe for me as the H5 Genie and the H5 Titan.

Mm, personally I'm against sticking him in any town, he's the mount of one of the leading Hindu gods, and a deity in his own right, so I think a role as a boss creature would be more appropriate, or at the very least as a champion creature.

Now you're talking! I can't believe I never thought of making him a boss creature.
Though if he did get stuck in academy he would be really useful against necromancers. ^

Of course the problem with Hindu myth (for what we're after) is that there are very few mythical creatures not directly connected with one god or another.

Finding the factions' base themes
In my opinion, Ubisoft/the next developer in the next game should think creative and go back to Heroes 2/4 and the factions' most basic themes: so for example Haven is a human Medieval town, stronghold is about brutal might, Dungeon is about ruthless Arcane power, Sylvan is about nature etc. etc.
From the basic theme, they can advance and develop it according to terrain, dominant race etc. An example is a Stronghold variant built on snow, including eskimo-styled Goblins, ice hags and owl-faced griffins- creating a refreshing take on the familiar.
To explain the difference, they can always set it on a different continent in Ashan.
I once posted such a suggestion on the forum, you can check it out..

That's actually a good idea, sort the themes out first, then worry about things like the lineup. Also, don't be afraid to get creative, think of what the army was like a century or two in the past.

Ain't gonna happen Moonshade.
As long as LeBreton is in charge, things will happen his way and nobody else's. And since Ashan is his baby, they will keep going along the lines they set out in the Compendium.
