Quest for the Goblet (IC)
A clear, late spring day. The remnant of the Brotherhood of the Tattered Banner had broken camp near the town of Shrouded Hills. There was an inn in the town, however it was too small to fit all of the members of the Free Company.
The town itself housed a large halfling population, as it was in the duchy of Bright Stone, where the halflings were pretty much everywhere. only the guardsmen and some shopkeeps were human. there was an orcish trading caravan stopped nearby, coming to Shrouded Hills for the market day which was held today as well as on the morrow. Dragomir decided to stop here and stock up on some supplies, before marching his company Northwards to his home, which afterwards will lead to the uncharted lands, wherein the fabled Goblet of Manara lies hidden from mortal eyes and hands.
The camp was near the outskirts of the town, the remaining wagons of the company were placed in a half circle manner, with some tents built up nearby.
Magnus had set up his grinding wheel and anvil, and was busy with sharpening his hunting cleaver. some dented armor pieces were thrown in a pile nearby, as they awaited their turn for repairs. Shrouded Hills didn't have a blacksmith, and the nearest town with one was a few leagues away, so Magnus was mumbling something under his nose, the whole time he worked, while occasionally drinking from his wineskin.
Dragomir sat by the wagon which was given to the leader of the company. It didn't differ much from the rest, only the canvas was of different color, black with brass trim this time. Drago, like many of his fellow mercenaries was having lunch. some were sitting in a circle, most likely playing cards, while some others were on separate groups or on their own.
Drago took a sip from his wooden tankard. the inkeep was generous enough to give the company a large keg of kvass, free of charge, to quench the thirst o fthe company. Dragomir limited alcohol consumption while on the march and during the day, making sure the company was able to fend off any threat they could face. Magnus wouldn't heed this even if threatened so there was no way he could persuade the dwarf. besides, it wasn't like the dwarf would tumble around while drinking. in fact Magnus held his drink really well, and wasn't drinking till he dropped unconsious.
The king of Merinanth contacted them personally. He handed them a copy of the map showing the supposed location of the Goblet, and several writs. the documents enabled the Free company to take any goods they find in smuggler dens as their own. usually if a smuggler den is found or the criminals get caught, the goods were sold off, and the funds went to the kingdom's treasury and various charities. By allowing the Free company keep the goods, the king solved their payment problem for a while. Magnus on more than one occasion found these hidden places while going on a hunt to replenish the company's food stores. and the more the years pass, the more it seems that smuggler loot stashes and dens are popping out like mushrooms after a rainy day.
Dragomir also decided to accept any bounties that pop up along the way, as the reward money could also be used to keep the company in good spirits, and buy the necessary supplies.
The quest for the goblet, as it was aptly named 3 years ago, attracted many charlattans and various opportunists. lords fallen from the king's grace, poor out knights with nothing but a horse, a beaten sword and armor on their backs, who dream of asking for the hand of the princess as a reward for returning the Goblet. The Last Free Company was in the service of the Throne of Merinanth for the last few hundred years, and never failed to deliver. the king's trust was well placed in them. on the other hand, the Brotherhood fell on hard times, but as the company's history tell, it wasn't the first time that the Brotherhood was low in numbers.
Finishing his meal Dragomir sat with half a tankard of kvass and srcibbled something in his journal. later he decided, he'll set some men on a hunting party to bag some game, and take some to go to the town's market with him, to see what they can barter and trade.

Francis passed the night pondering on a book he recently found from Magnus's findings, he was fascinated to find a tome containing grammatical theories and poetry by early writers of the Merinanthan school of poets and yet was puzzled at how could a lowly group of bandits and thieves could appreciate such fine writing, unless they robbed a bard or some scholar, which in his mind would have made far more sense than marauders reading book, a preposterous idea for him.
He was so eager to read it that he constantly nagged Magnus to give the book to him, or just allowing him to read it for a while, he could try and read faster than usual just to have a look at some ways to improve his writing and his expressiveness, or just to impress women more easily...
When the new day dawned Francis woke up with his bones aching from the sleep in the tent, cursing between his teeth for not being allowed to spend the night at the inn, but everybody knew what would have happened there if he did.
He was still sleepy when he heard the noise of Magnus's tools working the iron and the others getting ready for the new day, so he got up and tried to ease his pain, with no success...
So, he put on his gambeson and took his beaten and dented armour to Magnus as usual to repair the damage that was done in the last few clashes with brigands, and took care himself to sharpen his blades, so as to be ready in the event he would have to go on an hunting run, considering that was something he would have not appreciated he would have preferred to have everything in order so as to not make it more stressful for him.
He then decided to pass the morning by checking the carriages for any eventual problems with the structure, something he was ignorant of, and for eventual missing goods from the carriages, something that in the event it actually happened he wouldn't be sure what to do, as usual, and would probably have to interrogate anybody that came close to the carriage during the last day or worse, having to search them himself. Luckily for him everything was in order.
After lunch, while waiting for Dragomir to give him his task for the day he went to Magnus hoping that he would have finished repairing his armour and remind him about the book.
While walking he thought:
"Well, I sure hope my armor has been repaired... yet again, I swear, that armorer guaranteed me that my armour would be far from damageable...
Or maybe it's still stronger than usual armours? I didn't have too many occasions to fight heavily armored opponents since I bought the suit, ah fiddlesticks, why do such things happen to me?"

After finishing her lunch Elena had decided to take a walk around the market, looking for anything that might catch her eye. All she had found so far were some cut bamboo she intended to turn into crackers. Not very fruitful though she was running out of the smaller stuff making it worthwhile. She quickly decided there was little of interest for here there and returned to camp.
Once in camp she made her way to the edge and took up her journal and quickly wrote down some notes about the day. Closing it, she walked out a bit, scouring the close area for different small plants until she had a couple and returned, sketching them and all but one of their names on the same page she had just written in. Once done she let all but the one she did not recognise fall to the ground. Standing up, plant with spiky blue leaves in hand, she started looking for either Isabella, Dragomir or John to tell her what said plant was.

- Hey lad- Magnus greeted Francis. The dwarf addressed all members of the company as either "lad" or "lass", save for John, for Magnus called him the "big guy", and Dragomir whom he addressed by name- this time it wasn't as tough to repair it on such conditions. the bloody halflies ain't got a smith, 'tis be the best I could do. the armor's tough, ain't no dwarven forged though, but bloody durable. ye need to stop trying to get a hit. one day someone ought to smack ye in the head with a bloody crow's beak, and it'll be one more man less for us. use that damned sword of your better. with each bloody dent I fix your armor weakens, and soon enough you'll need a new suit.- Magnus paused and rested his smithing hammer on the anvil- I'll need a bit more work to rid your breastplate from those dents, but the rest is done. ye want somethin else? that bloody book perhaps? it's in the wagon, on the chest, by me bedroll.- Magnus took a drink from his wineskin. He sighed and started working on Francis's breastplate. The young knight really wanted to test his steel in a proper way.
Dragomir finished writing, and emptied his tankard. He stood up and began walking towards Magnus, to tell him to get a few people to go hunting. he walked passed the guys playing cards.
- How you doing fellas?- he asked
- Fine. that is we would be if Blackbird wouldn't be winning.
- Really?- Blackbird was a wizard, about a hundred years old, a short, balding bonswadan. according to him, he studied magic in Brek and Sequat. he was a man of few tricks up his sleeve, and ever since Elena joined the company, he often augmented her fireworks with an illusion or two to further scare the enemy. he was a lousy card player however, but even on him, luck had to smile sometimes.
- You should check his sleeves- Drago said smiling. the lads, including the wizard himself, laughed.
- Allright, you guys keep to your game and guard the camp.
- Right boss- one of the players said.
continuing towards Magnus' field forge, Dragomir bumped into Elena, holding a plant. it's leaves were spiky blue.
- Hey there. I see you found a lazuli vera. a nice find, if it's got enough juice we could use that to make a wound dressing of it((a thing similiar to rooskie "zelionka" if you know what it is)). Do me a favor Elena. go get John and Magnus, and head to the forest nearby for some game.

"Take care when you go there", I said as I walked into the conversation.
"I spotted some movement in the woods; probably an bunch of animals, but, eh, dunno, overheard a bunch of halflings talking about some bandit gang passing through these parts."
I turned to Dragomir "Drago, got anything for me to do? If not, I might as well go and take a nap again."

Quickly writing down the name and handing the Lazuli Vera over, Elena thanked for the help and headed over to the anvil while reminding herself to bring her weapons in case Zet's words were to be proven correct.
"Hey, thanks for fixing the helmet" she said, picking it up from the pile of fixed gear. "Dragomir wants us and john to go hunt some game. Meet me over by the edge of camp over there in some thirty minutes and i'll go get John. Zet warned about possible bandits".
As she was leaving she noticed the dwarf grumbling over that Francis' type's plate and silently laughed to herself. No doubt the dwarf had something to say about this.
Moving through the camp, picking her weapons up on the way, she spotted the unmistakable figure of john and headed over.

John sat near one of the gatherings, leaning against a wagon. He listened to the conversation beside him, smiling vaguely to himself from time to time. It's been about 15 years since he joined the Brotherhood of the Tattered Banner and he still felt excited to be surrounded by people whose company he enjoyed. He tinkered with various objects they found at the last smugglers' den. There wasn't anything really interesting there, but occupying his head with something helped pass the time. He saw Elena approach him.
"Hello, Elena." He welcomed her with a smile, "found anything worthwhile in town?"

- aye, that's what I'm here for lass. be with ye in a minute- Magnus said to Elena, but wasn't sure if she heard him, as she only came up to pick up her helm and told Magnus that they're going hunting.
The last few swings with the hammer had straighened out the last dents on Francis's chestplate.
- And done.- Magnus said and took a gulp from his wineskin. He then placed his blacksmith's hammer in his tool box, and moved the anvil and the grinding wheel near his wagon.
Magnus removed his clan's tabard from himself, and picked up his crossbow and two quivers of bolts. He also took his rondel and hunting cleaver with him. he deiced to leave his masterwork warhammer in the wagon. even without it, Magnus was more than an able oponent.
- Yes there is something which you could do Zet...- Dragomir began.- I want you to head to town and gather any rumors you find worth wile. what are the merchants saying and what are the general news around here.
Dragomir did not yet tell what rights the second writ held. but from the looks of it, the king did not want to take any chances. He decided that he'll tell the company about it in the evening.
He went to look for Francis. he could help to deal with the merchants who would try to make a bigger profit from the mercenary company.

"Just some potential casings. Nothing interesting. Dragomir wants us to go out and hunt some game so meet me over there-" Elena pointed towards the same location she'd told Magnus "-in about twenty minutes. Zet heard something about possible bandits in the forest as well so consider that" she finished before walking away.
Refilling her waterskin she made her way to the designated meeting spot and sat down, picking up some grass and practiced her magic on them to pass the time.

"Sure thing, Drago.", I said before he left.
Going into a town opened many possibilities. Even though I am a part of the Brotherhood, I still have tendencies to "borrow without asking" from other people. And, quite frankly, nobody knew of it! The trick is to grab something that the owner won't be missing - an apple from a farmer, a coin or two from merchants... I remember the day when I got away with an ancient-looking talisman from a peddler. Sold it to a noble for a pretty good sum; enough to buy me a week's worth of brandy. Could it be one of the godly artifacts everyone's obsessed about? Highly unlikely, but who knows where these peddlers get their stuff from. Even to this moment I can't shake off the feeling that I should've kept it.
Anyway, I yawned, scratched my head and headed over to Magnus as fast as I could to grab a side arm in case I needed it. Over time, you realize that swords and rapiers are not particularly good for defending yourself from muggers. A dagger, or, even better, a main gauche allows for a faster approach and is a lot less intimidating so the muggers are actually less reluctant to attack. Now, you might be wondering what's good with muggers being less reluctant to attack, and to that I say that the town guard is grateful if you manage to best them. And when the guards are pleased with your actions, they will think of you the last if a crime is committed. That only works, however, when you don't get killed in an encounter with the villains, otherwise... you get the gist of it.
As I was saying, I headed over to Magnus' place.
"Magnus! ", I shouted, "You still there? I need a weapon to borrow. "

"Well well, it went far better than I expected, I didn't know Magnus would finally give me the book, of course, how could he keep it from me? I mean, I'm the one interested in such things, keeping them away from me would be going to be too stressful for anybody"
As Francis thought this he grinned from his satisfaction, Dragomir still didn't give orders to him, so he thought he could silently sit and admire the works of the finest writers of the kingdom...
He then heard the leader call him, and Francis had to stash the book with his belongings as fast as he could, as he was required in the streets.
"Now that's something more suited for my position, the merchants love when somebody speaks their language, I'll have to take a few moments to prepare though, as people need to believe I'm just a young merchant strutting around the street" he thought, as he walked by the wagons and cleared his voice.
"I hope there will be ladies, the complacent ones tend to like soft spoken gentlemen... But I cannot stay for the night, but maybe I can get a cut off the purchases, let's hope these half men don't prove to be a challenge, this day was better than usual and I'd prefer to not have it ruined by some mice."
He then sat down and started waiting for Zet, as he understood the shadow had to go inside the town so he could accompany him, if the man desired so or wouldn't mind, he wouldn't have waited for too long though, as he feared to be too late for getting the best prices.
While waiting he pondered on how he could improve his swordsman skills as the previous exchange with the dwarf started worrying him too much...

Isabella actually slept well last night a rarity, for her at least, putting her in a relatively better mood than normal. Upon getting ready for the day she decided to take a walk through the market. She rarely found anything of worth to her on these outings, but she enjoyed the time to clear her mind of worries. She did find something this time though, a book on medicine and some replacement vials, so she left the market relatively content.
Upon returning to camp she had her lunch and found a nice spot on the outskirts of camp to read her book in peace. She then grumbled remembering she had left her dirk for Magnus to sharpen that morning. After a bit more grumbling and some cursing she got up and headed over to where Magnus's tools had been.

"Sure, I'll meet you there." John waved to Elena as she went away. He liked the girl. Then again, he liked all of his comrades so that didn't mean much.
John laid out his equipment pondering what to take. He strapped his short-sword, axe and roped to his belt. He hesitated a bit about his shield, but eventually strapped it to his back - it was basically a huge board and that could be useful in trap-making. Then he looked at his club. After some pondering he decided to leave it in the camp, it was hard to stay quiet with something so big and if Magnus was coming, there would be enough ways to smash skulls.
Finally, he left to the gathering spot to meet with Magnus and Elena.

- For the last bloody time lad- Magnus addressed Zet- spare weapons and armor are held in the wagon next to mine. go and get whatever suits yer fancy- He said as he exited his wagon.
- Oh hey lass- He said to Isabella- your knife is done.- He picked up her dagger, and a piece of parchment, and cut several bits of it, proving that the weapon was now razor sharp. Magnus sheathed the weapon and handed it to her.
- Better than the day it was forged. oh yeah, I think Drago is looking for some one to accompany him to the market.- He said.- Now if ye excuse me, I need to get going to help bag a beast or few.- He said as he was placing a "magazine" on his repeating crossbow. the weapon was of Kythayan design, but was improved upon by gnomish tinkers. Being the Thane's nephew, he received this weapon as a gift from his uncle once he finished his apprenticeship as a smith.
He went to the edge of the camp, where Elena and John were waiting for him
- Oh hey there. I think I saw a herd of zubri roaming nearby. would be great to get one eh? Let's get going- He said to his companions.
Dragomir got Francis, who seemed to be pondering on something.
- Let's go. I something on your mind?- He asked when they were walking. Dragomir left his leg and arm armor back in his wagon, however his cuirass and weapons were near him. He waved to Isabella.
- Let's go. our medical stores are low. and maybe seeing a priestess of Manara, those greedy buggers would lower their prices.

"-so by using some blades of grass i believe i might be able to connect them with ice, creating an ice sword of sorts" Elena was explaining as magnus arrived, telling them about potential game.
"yeah, Let's. You two lead the way" Elena answered him. She was only bringing her sword and helmet for armaments seeing as anything more would just be too loud or cumbersome. Besides she was certainly proficient enough to deal with some untrained bandits.

- That would be a great idea big guy- Magnus said while walking, with the crossbow in hand.- Hold on a minute- He said, and aimed with his crossbow, and pulled the trigger. a thud was heard nearby. Magnus reloaded the crossbow and went to the direction of his shot. he picked up a nice, round and plump pheasant. the shot almost took the bird's head off.
- Our first catch of the day- He said and placed the carcass in a burlap sack that he carried when hunting.
- Allright, why don't you get on setting up the trap, and I along with the lass would go and chase out the zubri for you.- Magnus looked around, and took a sip from his wineskin. he offered it to his fellows.
- Me gut is tellin, we bound to find some loot as well. the bandits that Zet mentioned, may as well be booze smugglers. but first things first.

"Oh, I was convinced Zet would be coming with us..."
Replied Francis to his leader, reluctant to admit that he needed more training on the sword, as he didn't know how Dragomir would have reacted and preferred to not anger him...
But this caused him to be silent for part of the walk, and when it became evident that he actually had something else on his mind he started worrying if staying silent was actually a bad choice, so, when he couldn't stand the burden of his thoughts anymore he admitted what was happening in his mind.
"Actually I had an exchange with Magnus this morning as he was repairing my armor, and he warned me as he usually does about my carelessness in battle, so I was thinking on how I could be better with the sword instead of relying only on my armour..." then he grinned "Phew, that was liberating, now, let's change the subject, what do you require of me my leader? Do you have any preferences on our purchases?"

- Zet has his own assignment, he will not be accompanying us. As for your combat... well. Your zweihander. use it more, practice your blocking. And Magnus is right. If I know him, he warned you that soon enough you'll need to purchase a new suit of armor. and it would be a waste, since your current one is of damn good quality. Now, as for the goods- He handed him a decent sized pouch of gold- first thing we need is food. We need bread, as well as flour. also some grains. Go for buckwheat, it cooks faster than other grains. also get a few wheels of cheese. you need not worry about meats, our hunters never returned home empty handed. also, get some salt, we're low on that.
Dragomir turned to Isabella. He also handed her a sizeable pouch with money.
- As you seen yourself, our medical supplies are low. we need cloth for bandaging, and wound dressing. as well as simple herbs for curing common aches. our supply of them is nearly diminished, and the ones we've gathered are still drying. I will go to buy some leather and other materials we'd need for repairs. to bad that the nearest mining guild trading post is 20 leagues northwards, in the next big town. Let's meet up by the tavern in about an hour.
* * *
-Don't worry, you won't be missing any of the action- Magnus said to the half-giant.- unless the buggers start fleeing upon seeing you.- he said as he and Elena moved into the woods. soon enough they reached a small clearing, where they saw the herd of wild bovines.
- Allright lass- Magnus whispered- we get the one strayed from the herd. over there- He pointed at a lone bull, grazing a bit off the rest of the herd.- I'll go from one side, you go to the other. we'll scare them, and hopefully, the stray bull will run where the big guy set up the trap.
