it's SUPPOSED to teach you how to suck everything bad up, and to take orders when given. having a strong resolve(basic training made hardly a dent in me), i was able to do the former just fine. the latter... not so much. which is why i didn't do 20 solid years.

Three words: Failing Medical Examination.
Honestly, how many do you think will pass it, out of all those drafted for conscription? two, maybe three thousand?

@ kip: i'd imagine that you can have waivers signed for some cases, if the future bad-ass soldier who takes on the AI army is motivated enough. i myself had a waiver signed for my scoliosis, so i could get in. i wouldn't have been able to without it.

we're talking about a former Eastern Bloc republic, so a Bribe is also a thing.
I think that stuff like genetically passed heart problems(severe hypertensia included) are a huge no no when applying for military service(except 'ol Israel ofc, I heard they find a suitable service for everyone there). So something as scoliosis won't be a huge obstacle.

tSar-Ivor said: Even in the US the idea of patriotism only prevails to get imbeciles to die for the country, real soldiers when asked will rarely be motivated by ideas of nationhood (though they'll officially claim to be), they're soldiers because they're soldiers, it's a profession and nobody likes to admit that they enjoy the regimen and murder.
To those of you who don't know me very well, I was a soldier in the US Army. My contract ended 3 years ago and I've since then returned to civilian life.
I'll admit, I did not join purely out of a sense of patriotism. That was a small part of it but based more on the fact that my father and grandfather both served before me. That was part of the reason. The other was because I needed steady work in a time in the US when the economy was not at its best.
Now am I an imbecile for joining?
I would certainly hope not.
Sure, it was a profession but I also had (past tense) pride in my country and it's military as well. I've become a bit jaded and cynical about it all since then but I don't regret it.
Oh and I certainly didn't join because I enjoy murder. In case you were unaware, studies have shown that 98% of the population has an instinctive, strong resistance to killing another human being. Soldiers included. According to well-documented research (including that by Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall, who wrote Men Against Fire), only about 15% of WWII veterans (infantrymen) would fire their weapons toward the enemy during the average confrontation.

How many join because they think they might get some killing anyway? I'm curious, what kind of training did you receive?

Yeah, but that's a contract, right? It is not that you were forced to enter. As some said, having a pro army is good than being drafted into "the cause".

there were more than that. i'm sure we have enough to make an elite fighting force. even if it practices unconventional tactics. we'd be like hc's A-team.
and i would definitely be Murdock.

Too busy saving the world from the usual threats, I know I can leave the special ones to you guys
Seriously though, what do they teach you over there? Our unit being support, we only had tank-related know-how and little else. Barely any shooting, next to no marches, no hand-to-hand combat. My specialty was reading maps, calculating coordinates, amount of powder etc but there was already a more experienced guy for that so I wasn't doing much in exercises. Unlike the rest of my unit Man I felt so loved sometimes.

special? are you saying we only take out the mentally retarded? because that's just... gangsta, yo.

in basic training in the states, you learn everything you need to learn to be a simple soldier. how to navigate over terrain using a map, how to shoot various firearms, how to throw grenades, how to fire a rocket launcher, how to take orders(), how to kill your opponent using your body, how to kill your opponent with an empty rifle with a bayonet attached, how to kill your opponent with a hand-held bayonet, how to shine your boots(they don't do this one anymore, since black boots are gone), how to press your uniforms(again, they don't do this anymore, since new uniforms), how to march in formation(which comes in handy ONLY when you graduate, as that is the only time when you use this defunct form of military training. it's actually about a sense of one-ness with the unit, psychologically. but whatever), etc, etc. as far as exercises go, you'll be physically honed to the height of your own physical fitness.
in A.I.T., they teach you your specific skill(if you're not infantry. if you're infantry, they teach you expanded combat operations in basic more, before you're given an M.O.S.). you still deal with exercising, only somewhat less so.
once you're in the army, they teach you how to drive a humvee and other various vehicles and how to take care of them, how to respond to attacks while in a humvee(both solo, and in a convoy) and other various vehicles. and again, once you're in the army, your physical exercising routines drop off yet again. this is where you will encounter soldiers getting fat. especially the women and older ranks.

fredmuffin said: how to shine your boots
Best skill ever
No sarcasm. A man needs to know how to keep his shoes nice, tidy and shiny, since shoe shine boys are a thing in the past. Shame they dropped it out.
But what Fredmuffin describes, also applies to the basic military boot camp training here. Although only in theory, as some of the people are know that are in the service, they say that most of stuff they did was march, march and again... march. Also, cleaning rifles when you're bored. Most of them have little to no firearms handling and close quarters combat training, if any at all.
But we will defeat russia. NATO will help us. Now the last part was sarcasm.

lol, i took somebody's kitchen duty that day, because i knew what was coming. i was ninja-eating the best marble cake i've ever eaten in my life while my entire platoon was getting smoked(excercised until muscle failure over and over) that whole day from snowing up their drill-and-ceremony march training. LOL. served those snowers right; i hated them all.
i kept taking out the trash so i could watch them getting smoked outside.
