Well from my understanding there was never a mandatory "no rule" designation.  I always thought it would be whatever was agreed upon between the 2 players prior to the start of the game.

Edit**  That being said... I have nothing against no rules, I just want it to be clear on both sides.

you right with that...
the basis of the tourney was "ol' school" but if the 2 participants agree on "some" rules (like we do)
then it's not the business of anyone else to get involved...

Good list of rules, LKru!
Quote:
In my case for example, when a player tells me that the rules are in the game... what does that mean?  No rules?  I saw where dd and fly is removed from the template in the description, but here I have angel wings guarded by a hoard of Thunderbirds.
In this case, if the random template came with rules built into it that should have eliminated all possibilities of Fly or DD, and yet you found "Angel Wings", I think that the Artifact should be left where it is or a restart should be agreed upon.

For me, I like random templates that have some of the rules that you listed above built into them, because it acts as a balance for both players. So, I  don't usually add any rules beyond what comes built-in with the map...although, I would never "hit & run" or "red rush" someone out of mere principle, although I wouldn't complain if someone did it to me (I figure that it is an honour thing).

In this case, I'm surprised to hear that an Artifact of that level was included in the map...which points to there being a possible error in the map's generation, hence the restart. Another possible outcome, is to play through the game and simply report it to ToH or WW & not to the nOOb Tourney...as Plexus and I did last week.

Usually with Fixed maps, you don't need many rules because most of the tested maps are balanced already and eliminate all of those possibilities you mentioned.  However; with random templates, you get random occurances... such as:  Misplaced guards, unbalance of cons/hives in player zones, hillfort in 1 zone where a player doesn't have to spend money and resources upgrading dwellings where the other player does, etc.  Example of fight misplaced guards: You may have a creature stack guarding another zone that is offset allowing you to walk into the next zone without having to fight.  This is a very popular rule on the zone and is even mentioned in the WW rules for Tourny's.  Where I agree with you about rr and hr, this thread had several posts speaking of "old school" no rules play, cutthroat, etc.  Like I said, any rules are fine with me... but I don't want there to be any confusion on either side.  I think it is worth the extra few minutes to discuss what rules (or no rules) to follow (even if they are thought to be built into a random template).

I agree...I just fear the day that you can actually manage to beat a Hoard of Thunderbirds and show up at my town's doorstep. Angel Wings or not, I'd be toast!

I totally agree with u Lkru, even if rules are thought to be built into the template both players should take a couple of minutes before the game to discuss rules so that neither player has any confusion at all as to what they can and cannot do in the gameplay. If rules are not discussed it should be assumed that anything u run across in the game is fair...the one thing that I think should always be an exception even if its not discussed is misplaced guards. If one of the players runs accross misplaced guards they should by principal have the honor to fight the guards before entering that zone. This is not something that anyone can really control and is definitely is not something that is designed to occur on any map. Its a flaw in the game and should never be exploited.

Also while were on the topic, I was wondering how do u know if and what conditions are already built into a template. I have a whole bunch of templates on my PC (pretty much every template from the ToH site) but I have no clue if any of them have restrictions already built in or what restrictions they have. Is there an easy way to get this information about a template?

The restriction already placed in a map are referred to "fixed maps", not to templates. Fixed maps are completely pre-set and so u will most of the times not be able to:

- build mageguild level 5
- find necro or conflux towns
- specific artefacts
- a.s.o....

How to prevent specific artefacts to occur on the map or as reward from utopias?
Easy....just place a seers hut on the map, who searches for that artifact, and place this artefact "unreachable" on the map. Now u will NEVER find this artefact anywhere else on the map. Seers arties are unique..
This is also a good way to prevent players from getting seacaptains hat, endless sack of gold and boots of levitation as reward from utopua...just place some seers huts looking for them....done...

You are not able to make such restrictions in a template. You canīt ban spells, arties or skills there. You only can do that in the map editor, where u let the comp create a random map with settings u made before. But this is not possible when creating a random map through the game itself.
When u read stuff like "(ban fly, dd, red orb)" in a template discription (extreme II for example), than this is only an ADVICE from the template creator to do so...itīs not automatically done with the template itself.

Angel,
that's some sweet info..
When I was reading the previous posts I was thinking that this would be good to add to the library..
not many will read the noob thread hoping to see something on mod templates!!

You may want to consider copying this part of the thread into a new thread in library.  Conan could then add it to the table of contents!

just an idea.

Wow, talk about some eye-opening information!

I was sure that the rules were built into the random templates...I had no idea that that the description of "no Fly/DD/etc." was simply a suggestion! Well, thanks for clearing that up for me Angelito...and I'm sure for a few other nOObs, as well.

That's what this tournament is all about, right? Learning as we go, with the resourceful supervision of a vet like LKru...ahhh...I mean Angelito!

I'd like to report that I am conceding to Plexus, giving him the victory in our endless game. (Almost 3 months long!)

Actually, I had a "moment of truth" last night and realized that I've lost the will to play altogether. Plexus and I have been battling it out for many many hours the last few days and we are still far from finishing. And to be honest, I've put off lots of stuff and need to prioritize.

You see, I have an addictive nature with video games and I can tell that I am "in deep" with HoMM3. So, I'm sorry to say that I don't think that I will keep going with this tournament...or with any HoMM3 games, for that matter.

Sorry LKru, but I won't be finishing our game either. I don't know if you want me to give you the win, as well, but I figured that since we had just played up to Week 2 that maybe it wasn't enough time to warrant a victory. If you want the win though, it's yours...Let me know, bud.

Nope...Don't want to win like that.

The game we are playing is a medium map with no under... not only that, the monster strength is set to normal.  I really don't see the game lasting much past week 3.

RL is much more important than a game though... so definitely attend to your RL activities.  If you ever have an hour to spare 1 night and it doesn't interfere with your RL, maybe you will reconsider and load our game  If not, it is not the end of the world... so don't feel you have to finish anything right this second.  If you come back a month or 2 later and want to finish, I will have the save ready If you want to abandon all together, I will just cancel the game as if it was never played.

I might eventually get an "itch" to play in the future, but I've completely overdone it this week. I've played from 10pm to 2 am...4 out of 5 days. I don't like games that last more than 3 - 4 hours, so playing a 12 - 16 hour game makes me feel like a crack addict!

Not to mention that I end up staying awake until 3am doing the stuff that I put off all night, so that when I wake up at 9am the next morning, I end up stumbling around like a "stoner" for a few hours.

Hehe Im not laughing at u Leo.....just what u said is funny cuz that sounds exactly like the way my schedule was back in college, except I would stay up till 2 or 3 in the morning every night doing homework not playing games And then the next morning it was worse than stumbling around.....I would go to my first morning class and pretty much sleep through the whole thing almost every morning. That teacher must have HATED me cuz I would literally go in there and sit in one of the seats toward the front of the class and then lay my head down on the desk and fall asleep. I barely passed that class

Anyway on a more serious note, Im sorry to hear that. Like Lkru said RL is more important than games so do what U gotta do and take care of business in ur life that needs attention. I hope u dont feel like theres pressure from any of us here or that ur obligated to devote a certain amount of time to homm3. Maybe just play for a couple of hours here and there when u have time or just on weekends. Anyway, I hope to see u around.

P.S. Yes our game has been abnormally long but I really dont think its going to last much longer. Let me know if u would like to finish it. Thx

Plex

Anyone here interested in starting up a game?  I've tried emails, IM's from HC and ZM''s from the zone when possible... and no replies  Just wondering if the interest level is the same as it was a month ago.
