Gathering some bands/artists fitting as "girl power" in this sense...which I like!
Norah Jones
Horrorpops? Not sure...
Wir sind Helden!!!!! (probably NOONE out of germany will know them XD)
Juli? Pink? (Don't like them too much)
So my list, so far,, unordered.
Melissa auf der MauR ~ Willing enabler
The gag in the name is that "Mauer" means "wall" in german (or so I guess). So it means something like "melissa on the wal (or wll). I jsut got to know this music 'cause they play on the festival I will go on this weekend. Biut I liek it really!
The Birthday Massacre - Kill the Lights
one got to get used to this music first, I think. The girly voice can be a bit annoying. But one of the VERY few gothic bands I still like to listen to. THis song is a nice one, I think. Like the "fairy-tale" images
Nightwish ~ Ghost Love Score
For me, one of the most epic songs ever written! A wonderful metal+orchester song/symphony. One can here the instrument talking to each other and interacting somehow, I feel
Mia - Tanz der moleküle
translation of the title: dance of molecules. Wonderful love song, imo ... which means I can't listen to it these times^^ But great nonetheless...'though again, you need to get used to the song and especially the singer's voice.
For the meaning of the text: It describes ebing in love, using images of molecules, atoms, and other tiny particles. Saying: "My heart dances, and every molecule moves" thus describing hwo completely love can be in you (or well, that's my interpretation, of course). Could be seen as a bit schmalzy indeed XD
Wir sind Helden ~ Für nichts garantieren
An awesome band - one of my favourites. And an awesome song!!! "Wir sind Helden" means "we are heroes" (quite fitting for HC, ain't it? ) and "Für nichts garantieren" means "guarantee for nothing".
I love the song. It's hard to tell the content of the text, it's interpretable and facetted. and hard to udnerstand it if it were translated porbalby- think many thing'd get unfotunately lost.
"Do you really see me?
Do you in fact see me?" (allready in these lines is a german word game that can't be translated. and such are often here.
"Say, do you like what you see?
Your do you see what you like?
See, what you like
is not standing still, it's moving"
That's a good line. The song is working like that much, taking over parts of sentences from line to line, but with highly different meaning! I like it!
Norah Jones ~ Don't know why
Nice, chill-out music! very relaxed!
Joan Osborne ~ One of Us
Gives me Goosebumps! I shiver. An awesome song, though I do not even like the voice of teh singer (is that thhe original, btw?)
Aretha Franklin ~ Think (from blues brothers movie)
Now that's a voice! Excellent! THough I usually do not listen to such music much. But very very good!!!
Cascada ~ Everytime we touch
A youth sin of mine Still, I sometimes like listening to this song! Good for movement Normally I like more...thoughtfull music, or rock, but, well, everybody has a dark spot
Dillon ~ Thirteen Thirtyfive vs Pocket full of money
I love this signer,, she's VERY emotional! I've seen her live and that was extremely emotionally touching. All songs a bit unprofessional and especially the recording but I just lvoe this music. Didn't know which song to take foor best, though...
So that was it

yeah, still listening to the playlists, should have the results within the next 24 hours.
next round's theme is "Weapon of Choice". You pick one instrument, besides electric guitar, and build a mixtape out of it.

I am going with Drums. Since it has a wide selection. Thought about going Fiddle, and going country (Charlie Daniels could just about fill out 10 himself with Fiddle), but wanted a wider choice set.
Baby hold on - Eddie Money
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - Ac/Dc
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Hot for Teacher - Van Halen
Xanadu - Rush
Hotel California - Eagles
Rush - Tom Sawyer
In the air tonight - Phil Collins
Going Under - Evanescence
Cream - Toad
I like me some drums.

Why forbidding electric guitar? ANd not any of the otehres?!? If e-guit is forbidden, why allowing acoustic guitar, drums, bass, etc.? that makes no sense to me and me, as guitar player angry.
okay...I exxaggerated but I don't understand it anyway.
I will make a choice soon, but I'm not sure. Of corus eI coud just pick Cello and make an only-apocalyptica playlist

Jiriki's Mix:
Melissa auf der MauR ~ Willing enabler
nice start, there's a girl and there's power
The Birthday Massacre - Kill the Lights
nice chorus
Nightwish ~ Ghost Love Score
good, although the song does go on for a bit...
Mia - Tanz der moleküle
a delicious change of pace
Wir sind Helden ~ Für nichts garantieren
hmm, kinda bland and a little bit too much like the last one
Norah Jones ~ Don't know why
very pleasant song
Joan Osborne ~ One of Us
good song
Aretha Franklin ~ Think (from blues brothers movie)
great addition to the mix, would have made a nice closer
Cascada ~ Everytime we touch
fun song, not sure I'd keep it in the mix for repeat listenings...
Dillon ~ Thirteen Thirtyfive vs Pocket full of money
song kind of meanders , not a great closer
Final analysis: Overall a pretty good mix with a variety.
Bloodlover's mix:
Doro Pesch
anthemic glam rock, good opener
Tarja + Doro in duet.
nice change of pace, song doesn't really go anywhere though
Girlschool - emergency
fun song
Ace Of Base - All That She Wants
nice. hmm, why do all ace of base songs sound the same though?
Epica.
lol, there's the hardcore stuff again
Arch Enemy.
*checks power box*
Lacuna Coil.
probably the best lacuna coil song I've heard.
Loreena McKennitt.
nice song, nice change of pace
Blackmore's Night.
a live song makes a great addition
Lita Ford- Kiss me Deadly
hmmm, the song sounds better if I don't watch the video
Theatres des Vampires - La Danse Macabre Du Vampire
interesting song, not so keen on the singer though
The Agonist.
I like the singer when she's singing , I'll pass on the rest of the band though...
Final analysis: All in all a nice set though could have used more variety, stylistically speaking
Mysty's set:
Raining Men - Weather Girls
haha, pretty great opener
Its my life - No Doubt
hmmm, a cover song is maybe not best for this mix...
Rich Girl - Gwen Stefani
nice costumes, song is kind of bland
Walk Away - Kelly Clarkson
fun song, though not very memorable to my ears
Stupid Girls- P!nk
very funny video , very girl power
Papa dont Preach - Madonna
gah, no madonna please
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cindy Lauper
I should have put this on my list.
Before he Cheats - Carrie Underwood
country song makes a nice change of pace, it's a surprisingly good country song at that
Wannabe - Spice Girls
lol, this was before the spice girls were the Spice Girls. lol again at how the producers were hiding posh's talentlessness
Dont Cha - PussyCat Dolls
nice visuals but the song is kinda bland, not a great closer. The evanescance prolly would have been better for last song.
Final analysis: Out of all the mixes this one speaks most honestly to the "power" part of "girl power" but I found the heavy emphasis on recent pop detracts from the variety. Also as you pointed out some of the songs are already hyper-familiar.
Kooka's mix:
beyonce - single ladies
fun song, good opener
Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice
nice continuation, tone is perfect
pink - so what
fun pseudo punk fits nicely here
alanis moressette - hand in my pocket
prolly her least annoying song
otep - self made
lol, mercifully short,
nice for a quick change of pace though
kt tunstall - black horse and the cherry tree (live)
interesting song
Tiesto Feat Kirsty Hawkshaw - walking on clouds
techno adds some good flavor to the mix, needs a trim though
joan jett: bad reputation
70s Joan Jett
Fairground attraction - it's got to be perrrrrrrrfect
a nice find for me, fun song
4 Non Blondes - What's Up
not one of my fave songs but a good closer
Final analysis: This mix is a really good combination of variety, nonfamiliarity, and good music.
So all in all I'd have to say for this round Kooka is the winner, narrowly edging out Jiriki. After that would be Bloodlover followed by Mysty.
Mysty that was your round though so if you want to post your grades too that'll be fine.

lol
an electric guitar mix would be too easy. I mean if you think about it electric guitar = twentieth century music. I'm hoping to turn over some fresh mulch here

I will listen to them tomorrow and give my impressions (can't hear them right now). In my defense (the songs I chose) some of them are what people think first when people think Girl Power.
Madonna is one of the most famous female musicians (rock/pop wise) ever. Love her or hate her, she did more for females in music then all but a select few.
P!nk IS all about girl power
Spice Girls COINED the phrase Girl Power.
All the songs had a 'girl power' theme to them .

Looks like I missed another one. I keep forgetting about this and even had almost complete lists for a couple of the categories.
Maybe if I get a chance I can at least sample some of the other lists and try to find some new stuff (or remember songs I forgot about).
