Actually, I was thinking mostly in terms of a Dungeon & Dragons magic system. That would mean that there is a range for your spells, which could have different forms:
- Some spells (damaging) will have a range within which you can target it. Range can be short, medium or long, and could depend on your Spell Power or Knowledge. Thus, you might only be able to target a Lightning Bolt within, perhaps, a 8 or 10 tile circle, depending on your Spell Power.
- Some spells (mass effect buffs or debuffs) will only work within a certain distance radiating from the Hero. Thus, Mass Haste might effect all friendly units within 6 tiles of the Hero. Again, the radius of the Circle would increase with magic skills (Spell Power or Knowledge)
- Some line of sight features can be implemented. I don't think it makes sense to believe that units can hide 100 % behind each other, but if you target a unit behind another unit, there might be a chance that you'll accidentally target the front unit instead (miss chance).

The ability to split stacks on the battlefield, so that you can have say 3 stacks of 50 archers each, rather than just one stack of 150, which might be forced to waste a fair bit of its attack sometimes.

i was thinking about natural tendencies of the hero.
The more aggressive you play the more a passive boost to your attack is increased. but start playing defensively and your defense is increased.
a stat boost that shifts around according to your playstyle.
Spend lots of mana? your knowledge will start to increase.
Focusing on precision with your spells (using them sparingly but to great effect)? You get a slight spellpower boost.
What do you think about it? it would be capped obviously and be something minor but might encourage strategy. You find you you are facing necro so you focus on attack to end the battle quicker.

I actually imagine what you said propose could very well be included as a skill perk. Say, your hero utilizes offensive force, its (and of course its troops) damage increases. Same for defence, magic power, magic resistance and knowledge.
I do not think, however, that this should have a long-term effect ( such as permanent stat boosts) as then this would prove a little bit tedious and overpowered. However, if implemented properly as a skill perk which works similarly to HoF's Empathy, it might very well do .

Ooh, a couple of semi-linked ones here:
* Mini-towns - Basically, towns that can only get to level 3/4, but they take up less space on the adventure map.
* Mini-factions - Independent mini-towns, they only get one hero type (5-6 heroes all out, count as independent) and 3-4 creatures. They can only convert Mini-towns not normal ones.

I guess with 3-4 levels for mini town you mean 3/4 creature tiers?

I'd like to see the possibility of assembling your own factions. Be it with only neutral and modded creatures or not. The problems with heroes models, their classes, unique skills and possibly town window could be solved by making available a common kit to choose from.

Sort of Map Editor, you open it and do stuff. Would prevent a lot of work with these creature adding and faction editing mods if such features come with the game.
Another problem would be multiplayer, I guess they would be usable only in, maybe, hot seat. Just to keep things fair and simpler, but some agreement system could work too, like when all players have the same "added factions" they're usable, because certainly the players agree they're fair. Another way is making some auto balancing, increasing costs, reducing creature growth (or whatever works for creature recruiting system), obeying a power level quota, that kind of thing.
Thinking a little more about it, it's like the Custom Characters in Soul Calibur, but more about mechanics (creatures and etc) than appearance.

i don't mean permanent but rather a few extra points assigned by the way you play.
Playing offensively increases your attack but then switching to defensively starts moving those points over.
IE
Attack - 3
Defense - 0
Start playing defensively and those bonus points slowly move over to defence
Attack - 1
defence - 2

I Shall name the point "Faction Editor" then!?
Multiplayer could be solved by edited factions being able to be sent via the game. And when starting a scenario, the hosting player chooses the usuable factions (coudl be limited for each game) and thos eare shown for all.
...you say it's more about mechanics. But if it means staying with the known creatures, it involves quite some looking that won't fit together properly probably...

I guess faction editor is a suitable name
Yes, the factions could be sent before the game.
About the looking of the resulting factions, I agree. It would be too much weirdness if the only options were already ingame creatures, also very limited choices. The mod creatures part is crucial on that.

I just got myself an account to say this.
I have seen some screenshots i know its hopeless but square tiles just dont work man.
We need hexagonal tiles in the battlefield. Dont you all agree thats what made homm3 the best ?
Even civ5 is going for hexagon tiles coz they know its the best.
I hope noone else mentioned this b4.
Thank you .
