Ok usually I don't care how females dress (outside Islamic fashion ofc) but I think Yuja Wang here is a bit over the top.

Lol, that’s Istanbul, btw, Lütfi Kirdar Exhibition Hall. It would have been nice to attend, I love Gershwin, and especially Rhapsody in Blue.

(Carrying over from the VW)

What music do you listen to at parties?

I listen first of all to classic rock and roll (1950's-1960's), big pop-dance hits from each decade, trance, Romanian dance music from the 1990's to today, and similar stuff. I'm usually not a fan of modern-day club music.

When I'm not partying I add to that instrumental music and classical.

Really enjoying bebop/hardbop or just swing, but I can also go with pop or rock. Folk/traditional music especially from Russia. Probably other things... When I was younger I used to party a lot with metal but not much anymore, can still happen with old friends.

Also in some rare instances classical music, as surprising as it may sound, but it's kind of a quiet party.

Now, I am the Libertango fan, nothing will replace how the original moved me as a kid.

This version is guuud too. But here is the question (to Salamandre), do you think the philharmonic orchestra makes their mark. It seems to me, it’s still the improvisers making the difference, had this not been the Berlin Philharmonic in the background but some other third rate orchestra, would you notice? I mean, of course you would but I expected some grand difference in interpretation, is it there, I cant hear it.

You could remove everyone behind, that would make no difference. Classical musicians make a difference in areas which requires sound quality, sound homogeneity, technical brilliance of somewhat very difficult traits - for the record, jazz is very easy technically despite what it sounds, + some other abstract concepts as creating simultaneous vertical structures perception, but in general in jazz or other pop variants they are worthless. Improvisation is an art which had been lost in the classical teaching, for various and multiple reasons, one being the enormous quantity of the repertoire being added with each century.

I still remember that day when I realized something went wrong in my musical education. It was around 10 years ago or so and I had recently finished Conservatory and could play these big virtuoso pieces such as Rachmaninov & co, and went to meet friends in a bar. Turns out there was a jam session there and I was not familiar with it at that time. My friends told me "go play man, you're so good" etc. I went, and the musicians there told me a very simple chord progression (a blues) and while it seemed clear in my head, when they started playing I could not do much. I had no vocabulary for this kind of music, but more importantly didn't know how to free my mind to be able to improvise, I didn't know any codes either. Only thing I managed to do was playing chords on time and it was voiced in a classical music way which was not fitting to the color of what was going on. After 25 years of intensive classical music study, it took me at least 5 years of hard work to only start getting comfortable with jazz. The learning curve is extremely different and so are the techniques. The classical background did not help much aside that I could play fast a thousand notes, but that dude just next to me only needed to play 3 and it sounded so much better than anything I could do. I'm still working hard and am now able to "do the job". It also comes with a few perks like the increased comprehension of harmony makes me now guess the next bars when reading a classical piece, because it's incredibly logical.

Well, the classical education should tremendously help accommodating with jazz, except that the classical education isn't taught anymore in France, but instead has been replaced by how to master this or that piece by parroting its difficult traits 6 hours a day. So you end with excellent performers being able to play this Etude of Rachmaninoff or the other from Liszt, but are totally clueless on how to display a simple Cadenza 4-5-1. The moment you take the scores from them, its like kryptonite, the skill is gone.

Sure, there are lucky cases but the majority is musically babbling. Then they get a diploma and start teaching, so you get why the cycle doesn't interrupt.

Geroff, bot!

At my gym, it only plays these awful new generation singers songs. Either local or international. Everything seems concocted on the same cauldron of bad taste and mainstream. The worst that makes me cringe everytime is Rihanna's duck immitation: "qua, qua, qua, qua, qua". Funny thing is that they are raking money. Figures.

Meanwhile, relaxing with Loreena McKennitt's songs at homeoffice agenda.

Just saw an interesting piece about the making of Song #2 by Blur with Graham Coxon, and he said, they played ist mostly live with only a few overdubs (most notably the droning guitar tone in the background) and partly improvised lyrics, because they intended to jokingly shock their record label by sending them a demo with something insanely noisy, brutal sounding (Coxon said, he wanted the guitar to sound cheap and not too well played) and then demanding to release this song as their first single of their upcoming new album - but before they even had a chance to make that demand, the record label called them and said, the thing would be absolutely fantastic and they wanted it to release as a single asap, the band going, WHAT?

I think, the story teaches a lesson that music and its fascination has a lot of facettes.

This silly song has 127.000.000 clicks on Youtube.

Just learnt about Britney Spears's conservatorship and basically almost her whole life being a living hell getting from bad to worse constantly. I don't particularly listen to pop music but she was extremely popular when I was a teenager and I never expected her to have such a cruel fate. I'm not naive and I know going from rookie to worldwide icon in less than a year is extremely dangerous but it went way too far, it seems also no one cares about it except her fans.
