It's an undead knight who kills things.

What do you guy say, a proper death knight for Necropolis?
I find it hard to differentiate between death knight as unit and as hero class. I really like the idea of an undead counterpart of the cuirassier/champion, they should not be nearly identical to the necropolis might heroes. That's why I would prefer to merge the black knight with the vampire. Also I really love the design of these little fellows and would be happy to see them return, either as core, or in some form merged with vampires/black knights.

I don't think I can agree with that. I see the dread knight as a very different creature from the vampire. A merge would be a disservice to both of them, imo.

I think part of the problem is that the vampires in Ashan seem to use life-draining swords - a notion that gels well in the minds of some viewers (like myself). Consequently, because of those swords (and especially with their armoured upgrade look in H6), they seem like prime candidates for "death knight" material.
This notion could be squelched simply by removing their swords and reverting them to the traditional school of the hands/teeth-on approach. This, however, poses a few problems. Certain viewers really like those swords, as stated before, and would not like this change. Another issue is how animations would be handled; back in the day, each attack was quick, minimalist, and almost "scratch"-like, but newer modern animations have a lot more visual flare, especially with critical hits. Just how many ways are there to make "humanoid biting something" dramatic?
Think there might be some sort of compromise. Let's assume that the animation issues can be attended to - could there be a "proper" vampire while a life-draining sword wielder exists in the same party (like, say, a dedicated death knight)? Would it be too much for two life-draining troops to exist in the same army without the aid of a Hero's spell?

I agree with Stevie, Vampires and Dread Knights are two different creatures quite unique by themselves. Make the Vampire Nosferatu again and having those two in H7's Necro would please me highly.

Those dracula/nosferatu vampires are maybe good for slipping into a fair maiden's bedroom, but imo these appearances are not suited for the battlefield.
On a battlefield, especially one with so many stronger units, the vampires really need armour to protect them from all the weapons and a weapon of their own to penetrate all the armour. Hence the vampire knight, which is imo a good candidate for black knight.

What does that even mean in a fantasy game. Flyers/teleporters anyway, with regen. Armors are for weaklings

Death knights are actually an extremely boring concept. Undead warrior on an undead horse. I get most people are attached to them from H3 but there are so many better options than that.

And with dragons, angels and whatnot around, vampires are weaklings
For me, even though it is a fantasy game, I find the idea of a vampire in robes diving headfirst into a group of heavily armoured soldiers to scratch and bite them ridiculous. If he has a cloak that he can transform into weapons that's fine by me, but those nightgown wearing ladykillers are totally out of place.

It's less scratch and bite and more rip and tear.
If Joss Whedon has taught me anything, it is that vampires are super-strong.

More boring than entire Haven *alwaysthesame * line-up? I don't think so. More boring than Wraiths? I don't think so. Or more boring than that manticore rip off called lamasu? Don't think so.
With a bit of tweak these guys could look really badass. And not just the shiny red armor like in H5.
Beside, im not a lore expert ( i dont frankly care about might and magic lore ) but aren't death knigths essentially mounted vampire lords?

Possibly. They were in HV.
However, nothing is stopping them being martial Liches on horseback.
Since Vampireness and Lichdom are both states of undeath, both could apply. Essentially Death Knights are Undead Knights.

But that still means they have dive into a fully armed battalion. Afaik, longer weapons are usually better than short ones, because the enemy is in your reach before you are in his. Claws and fangs are essentially the shortest weapons you can get.
If you are strong enough to rip your enemy in half, why not get a nice big sword and cleave him in half without getting stabbed in the process?

They aren't same tier unit

It depends. On the vampire example they are a fast unit.

So, I'll need to see Necropolis' line-up for this game in order to decide wether I'll play them or not. It's essentially 50-50 when it come to them.
For example, I liked H5 Necropolis. Ok it had zombies ( which was a bad thing for me ) and the rest of the line-up was pretty much the same ( aside wraiths ) but the troops were designed well.
Especially liches.
In H6.... I freaking hated Necropolis. Everything full of green fest + lame generic ghosts.
Not to mention non-skeletal liches that looked simply awful. Oh and Lamasu. Get that thing out of Necropolis.
Ahem... a bit of random rant.

They would be considerably less encumbered and possibly possess a greater degree of martial experience than their impossibly armored foes.
EDIT: I hate that there isn't a preview function

I think the Lamasu should be either an Academy or neutral creature, and look more like this than this.
Basic critter could be the Shedu, and they could have the H2 cyclops's laser eyes
