Comic book club!

It seems we have a bunch of comic book fans here, so I thought I could open a club here!

What do you think about comics? Are they just a fond childhood memory? Do you consider them children stuff? Or perhaps you are a hardcore fan? Share your story with us!

Where do you come from and what are comics like in your country? In the USA and Japan, comic books are industry, linked to movies and cartoons; in France, they are often viewed as art; in Russia, there were virtually no comics during communism!

What are your favorite comics? Do you like superhero action, underground stories or newspaper funnies? Let's see your top list!

Have you ever done some comics yourself? Are you an artist or a writer? Has your work been published? Could we see it online maybe?

What do you think about comics?

They're fond childhood memories and also later on I very much enjoyed reading them. It all started with this one

Both my brother and Hexa were collecting comics so I had a broad scope to choose from. I enjoyed all Batman comics and Spawn , the Maxx but also liked a few unknown ones that were dutch (I doubt any of you knows these) Also 666 is a great series and I myself collected Elfquest and might even pick it up again (i've been slacking  )

Where do you come from and what are comics like in your country?

Well in the Netherlands they're mostly corny drawn comics with a whole lot of humour ( ..or not  )

here's an example

wonderfull..no mosquitos

This is kind of a popular comic at the moment

What are your favorite comics?

My absolute favourite will always be Elfquest I think..what can i say..I love elves

Have you ever done some comics yourself? Are you an artist or a writer? Has your work been published? Could we see it online maybe?
When I was 6 or 7 me and my brother drew comics..for fun!   and no..I don't have them online (lucky you!)

I like comics, i think they're part of life, and greate entertainment if you ask me . I mostly read from Marvel Comics, like i mentioned before. i'd prefer old Spider-Man series, Spectacular Spider-Man and Peter Parker Spider-Man were my favourites. unfortunatly, in the Ultimate series they've changed alot of stuff. if you ever read it, i don't know if i confused but, in the Ultimate Spider-Man, Gwen gets murdered my Carnage? isn't she supposed to get killed by Green Goblin at the bridge? i mean they changed most of the old stuff, and i'll admit i don't really like it. I like the story about old Carnage character, Spider-Man and Venom joins forces to defeat him, but things get ugly. i believe it was the Maximum Carnage serie. also some issues that created by Todd McFarlane. from Image Comics, i'd prefer Spawn, he's really a cool character. i don't really like the lates issues of this series as well, it just doesn't have the same mood as the old ones, at least that's what i think. there are other comic books that i follow and read, but i'll talk about them later.

A girl reading comics...! Now that's rare. Ha, I remember my sister had to read everything and anything (otherwise, I'd bore her to death with those stories ). Eventually, she grew to like several titles, such as Italian "Dylan Dog". It's a comic about a handsome detective who fights vampires, ghosts and demons AND falls in love every issue!

Nowadays my wife reads my collection; so far, she enjoyed Manara's books only! (For those who are not familiar with his work, it's suggested for mature readers! )

I guess most of comics are sort of boyish... What do you think? What did you find in your favorite titles?

Speaking of which...

Quote:

I loved Batman, of course. However, my favorite issues were those that offered a different rendition of the classic character. I admit I was never fond of his caped crusader or the worlds greatest detective incarnations... but I loved Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller! Has anybody read those?

I've read early Spawn by Todd McFarlane. I was never much into it (or the whole "Image" fuss in the '90s, for that matter). I admit it's a cult classic, though. Seen the movie?

The Maxx...? Was it about a girl and a monster from another dimension? I think I saw a cool cartoon on MTV years ago. A great concept...! How did it end???

Like I mentioned in another thread, I am a huuuuge Elfquest fan! I have read the original series, but I wasn't able to find any of the later spin-offs. Have you got them? Are they any good? I agree Elfquest is hard to find and quite expensive, too.

I hate to say it, but I know virtually nothing about Dutch comics. Would you care to share some additional info? (I could find some facts via Google, but I'm interested in your personal impressions!) The cartoon you posted seems fine, but kind of corny. Is it a newspaper strip?

What about Joost Swarte? He's from the Netherlands, right?

I've read them all from Batman..there was also one with batman and superman together..but I'd really have to read up on it all

Don't remember how the Maxx ended I don't think it was a complete series and the spinoffs from Elfquest well they're not worth 15 euro a piece for me that's for sure!
I just stick to the "normal" series and the hidden years

Here's a link to online comics!

Elfquest

edit: Oh yeah..I dunno much about Dutch comics but Joost Swarte's style looks like TinTin style to me

About comic books...

Well, there's Asterix, but everyone knows how great that is

I've also got a Garfield and a Hellboy... Completely different, but both are good read.

And Fido & Mel is possibly the best of the Polish comics

I like the story about old Carnage character, Spider-Man and Venom joins forces to defeat him, but things get ugly. i believe it was the Maximum Carnage serie.

I grew up reading "Spider-Man" books! My favorite issues go waaay back to 1960s and Silver Age of comics. John Romita Sr (aka Jazzy Johnny ) is my all-time favorite Spidey artist, while his son (Romita Jr ) is second best. Today you can find his art in reprints, such as hardcover Masterworks (expensive) and b&w Essential Spider-Man (cheap). Did you know Todd McFarlane had drawn some Spidey books, like, 15 years ago?

I agree The Ultimate Spider-Man sucks! I hate the art, too!

I LUV Venom, too! Actually, I hooked on Spidey when he just got back from Secret Wars in another galaxy. You guessed it - that's when he got his new costume! I still think it was cooler than the classic red-and-blue one! I remember the issue when it was revealed that it was actually a cosmic parasite. Later it became Venom (even had its own title now and then )... That's where I stopped reading it, although I am familiar with Carnage etc.

You can recall the black costume and Venom here!

I agree about Gwen as well. For those who don't know: Her tragic death in 1973 was the most important event in American comics after the first appearance of Superman in 1938! Never before has a main character (let alone a beautiful blond girlfriend of the main hero) died so suddenly and violently! If you have seen the movie, forget it! We are not talking about Spidey saving both Mary Jane AND the bus full of people. Fans still argue whether it was Green Goblin OR Spidey himself the one who actually killed her that night on the bridge...!

The death of Gwen Stacy marked the end of Silver Age and the end of innocence in American comics... It was such a milestone that I cannot understand how they DARED to change it!

Like I wrote before, I was never too crazy about Spawn (or the rest of the "Image" roster). I guess I was too old when it first came out. Needless to say, Todd revamped the whole industry in the '90s... before he moved on to movies and toys and earned millions of dollars.

I thought the later issues of "Spawn" were better drawn and even darker the original storyline...?

Did you like the movie?

I was a HUGE Spidey fan growing up...
didn't have a college fund because of comics and hockey cards!

but I was of the "amazing spidey" series (late 80's early 90's)...  I really enjoyed the cartoon they created after it too!

(hmmm.... wonder why I liked him so much???
he small, fast, agile, sarcastic..... I really do wonder why!  )

speaking of Sin City, i saw the movie i admit it was greate movie, it reminds you the comic books. but i guess that it's story has too much violance in it, i still can't forget the scene where the dog eats human flesh, ugh! disgusting. Hellboy was a very good atemdation from comic to white screen (or silver screen)as well, and...wait this is a comic book thread, right?

i'm glad to hear someone agrees with me about Ultimate Spider-Man, thanks Vlaad . by the way i didn't really follow the entire serie but still there were some other things that mocked me. i've only seen Peter Parker wearing the Venom custom only for one issue, right? man, they could at least give him some more issues. there was a serie based on that he wears the Venom custom, Web of the Spider, in early years. i can't believe they're changing those stuff. there's gonna be a huge argument between us and the new generation, soon, it'll be like who shot first in that Star Wars scene, Han or Greedo?, lol, i don't know if you watched the movie.

yes i watched the movie of Spawn, it was very good but i didn't really like the end of it. Image Comics, i actually stopped reading from Image Comics after Jim Lee left, and DC became more, how do you say it? cool? though i wasn't really following much of DC's series execpt that Knight's Fall and KnightQuest series of Batman, they were really cool. i've read some Superman issues about a blue Superman? i don't really know much about it, so can anybody who has read it give me a background?

i said that i would talk about some other comic book series. how about the Reborn issues from Marvel Comics, i believe they've been realesed after the death of Onslaught character, right? man, what a monster was he. and also i forgot to mention about Punisher. Punisher is also a favorite character of mine from Marvel Comics, especially the one about Punisher kills all the Marvel characters, , coolest issue ever.

X-Men has also been changed, i think. i don't know why but i think i like the new series of X-Men, even Ultimate X-Men. still i'd prefer to read the old ones, Jean Grey turns to Phoniex and other stories about X-Men vs. Apocalypse or Mr.Sinister.

i wonder if there would be a comic book serie of Homm3, what do you think of that?

to Romana, nice picture of Hellboy.

also, i just remembered, do you read Daredevil? he is a blind hero of justice, right? once a friend of mine discovered something on one of Daredevils, issues, i'm not sure whether it's a new or an old issue. you'now what was the thing, on the page it shows Daredevil is inside his room and there was a small television image drawn at the backside, weird :/.

I hate to say it, but I know very little about Japanese comics (Manga) but I've seen many cartoons (Anime). I am familiar with both classics (such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell) and popular stuff, like old Robotek or Dragonball Z and the latest Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon. I do know Japanese books come in various genres - some are intended for kids, others (like Hentai ) are for adults only.

The comic I liked most is X/1999, although I've got just one issue...

Any more tips and hints about Manga...???

Ah, Lobo! "Attitude? What attitude?" LOL I liked the mini-series by Bisley. I like ANYTHING by Bisley for that matter! Well, maybe not FAKK 2, but Slaine rules!

Yeah, I was wondering why you used his name but didn't mention him first!

I LOVED Buscema's run in the 1980s! Excellent artwork and epic storylines... However, I wish I could read the stories when Connan became a king, had a son etc. I never found those issues here.

By the way, have you read Kull?

Quote:

See, that's what I didn't like: the movie reminded me of the comic TOO MUCH. In fact, it looks just like the book, doesn't it? Panel by panel! It even features drawings...

I usually don't like comic book adaptations because those films are just loosely based on the original source, so a lot of great stuff gets lost in the end. (See the above post when k1ng and I discussed the death of Spider-Man's girlfriend). Nevertheless, the authors of Sin City obviosly don't know what "adaptation" means; comics and movies are two different media, so you have to adapt the story and the characters... neither change nor copy them!

I adore the comic, of course. Frank Miller is my all-time favorite artist!

Have you folks read his Daredevil, Dark Knight or 300?
