Dude, what is it with you and Vista? Vista is really nothing special. It just adds more bloatware to your system anyway.

I misread his post and I agree with you that the graphics card might also be the problem, but you failed to see the RAM as an issue. The RAM is an issue.

I recommend you to get a newer graphics card AND more RAM. Up to 1 GB or more would do the trick.

I already meet the 256Mb of video processing capability. And, Vista is, the only way to compute for today's and tomorrow's computing's hardware + apps.

I already have 1.5Gb of RAM but, do agree in installing another 1.5Gb into it though. Total of up to 3Gb. Should, maybe, upgrade the main processor to 2.4Ghz as well. The machine is starting to lag a wee bit as of now.

That should prove to be way above the recommended specs. for T.o.T.E.

And, if, I still get those screen flashes after all these upgrades? Then, What's next?

No it isn't at all. There are MANY things that still operate for windows XP and are getting released for XP. Even Windows 2000 still gets programs that run for it that are being released these days.

Vista isn't a necessity to get at this point in time, and if you have Windows XP then just stay with it. No need to waste even more money.

Changing the camera setting to classic HoMM view might help speed the game up. Also disable cinematic camera.

Ram mostly. If you set the resolution and vid settings to minimum even that card should play it somehow.

Did all that already. No improvements what-so-ever.

Mind you that, I already am an IT Fanatic(not Pro though).

Luc your graphic card has 256mb of memory but it's just a marketing trick. Actually a card like that won't be able to use all that memory because of it's slow processing speed.

Do you have the latest drivers to it? I have radeon 1600pro and sdk 2008 march directX and my H5 works fine. They are both directX 9 cards from ati so in theory if you have the latest drivers yours should work with it fine too.

Sad that only Vista sales decision. It wasn't selling well enough so what could they do? Let's hope this one works. If it doesn't I'll most likely be changing to Mac(or Linux if they get a well working emulators for it) after the support for XP dies.

EDIT: Yeah I noticed. Those were meant for Nurull.

Once again, repeating myself over and over.

Quoting myself:
"I have latest in Direct X SDK-March 2008 and guess what: Now, the three versions of HoMM5 no longer work properly. And, I have a February 2008 Driver for that video card as well." In other words: Yes, I do have the latest drivers.

Just because XP will no longer be sold, does not mean no longer support for it. Microsoft promised that it will be supported upto 2011/2013. WinXP will continue on for at least a quarter of billion of PC users around the globe. This would be saying: "Nobody has the right to use PCs a of next month". This is like cutting the life-line of a patient in critical status within the constant monitoring room of a General Hospital.

My machine is so old(made in 2003 and revised in 2004)that, I cannot wait for a real machine to be in my possession. A new one is, at least, four(4) times better than the one I have right now. Just look at that new AMD Phenom quad core processing die: 3600Mhz bus speed. That processor alone is: around five(5)times the speed and ability to process than my AMD Athlon 3000+. These new machines are so performant compared to mine, right now, that WinVista Home Premium SP1 is a joke of an O.S. for its size and power. I currently have a mere 80Gb. Hard-Drive connected via Eide cable, that not even SATA1(150Mb/s) connection yet. These Hard-Drives of today, come standard at SATA2(300Mb/s) and, an average storage capacity of 500Gb.(6 times the size of my current one). The Terabyte HD is now being sold on very high profile machines at a cost of a mere 2,500$ plus taxes per unit.

Mind you: My Bios hasn't been updated/upgraded since December 30 2005.
That could be a major factor in processing hesitations throughout the hardware of my machine. I should check out Asus.com if they have fixed their screw-up with my Mainboard's newest Bios upgrade(2007 dated).

But ther latest drivers are april 16th.

Didn't I say after the support dies? *checks* I did.
Wanna guess when I changed to WinXP? After the support for Win98SE died.

BTW. I had athlon XP 3000+. It had a shock therapy session(gotta love electric bursts in a network ) along with my MB and kinda died so after half a year without PC I Salvaged what I could(rams, other hard drive, Video Card) and updated to Intel C2D e4500 with asrock board.

So I had:
160GB eide drive.
Radeon 1600pro agp
1024 DDR 400mhz
C2D e4500
asrock 4coredual sata r 2.0

I bought 2 gigs of ddr2 and clocked cpu to 3 Ghz. The change to old one is amazing.

Something along the change from my 200Mhz pentium, 128 ram, Voodoo 1 to the athlon xp 3000 system(xp 3000+, 512 ram, radeon 9600).

As for BIOS. Why repair something that is not broken?

Look at the version number of that driver, it is the exact same one-8.4.

Have you heard about this 512Mb vid. card called: ATI Radeon HD 3850? Its an AGP 8x card with a 256bit processor on it. That guy is using WinVista Ultimate Edition and says that it totally rocks. He, even, has full Direct X 10 onto it as well. Has a duel channel OCZ brand set of 1,024 Gb cards(2,048Mb in total RAM). But, here's the punch line: He's got a duel core main processor AMD Athlon FX-60 running at 2.6+Ghz with a clocked FSB of 1,000Mhz. And, he swears that he currently uses a A8V-Deluxe Mainboard for this kind of overpowered main processor and Video/Graphics card.

The funniest part is: He still uses a BIOS dating back 2004(1014 coded)and, mine is coded 1018.001(Beta Bios-according to Asus.com). And,  I am complaining about how I can update to last September-2007's latest Bios coded 1018.002(Beta Bios again). I just downloaded a utility app. for its 'Cool & Quiet' function dated as of 4th of April of this year.

Got to come back here for the pricing of that newest processor and graphics card upgrade. So, I can share your feelings onto that.

Did my entire search already with astonishing results.

First of all that guy's vid. card is a PCI-Express one, made by Visiontek.

So, for my own cost of upgrading this crappy machine of mine:

1. EVGA E-Geforce 7600GT AGP 8x, Superclocked, 512Mb. Video Card = 130$

2. Gigabyte's PC3200,400Mhz DDR1 RAM cards(1Gb+512Mb) = 150$

3. New AMD Athlon 64 Socket 939 at 2.4Ghz processing speed and 1000Mhz bus speed = 244$

A grand total of 130$+150$+244$ = 524$ before taxes are added. Around 600$ in total disbursed hard earned monies.

I saw fully assembled machines(towers) for half that price or, upto the same price as above for a properly updated system with better video chipsets integrated onto the mainboard.

I think that I really should start shopping around the city for the right machine. So many choices and so little time.

Hi,

I need a little help here.

- First off, my computer has more than enough to run ToE. And I have a 10/512 connection.
When I run the game in SP, all is fine, all set to highest and all the eyecandy there is.... runs smoothly.
- I can log onto Hamachi/ubi and chat all I want to. But let me start with ubi. When I log into ubi, I can see everything, I can chat and I can even start a game ........and thats it.....

- After I start a game I get d/c 99% of the time !!??  And I say 99% of the time because sometimes I can play a Duel...sometimes... and about a fortnight ago I actually played a FULL RMG with a ubi opponant and have played a 3 hour session against another, with no problems what so ever. But these are the only games I have actually been able to play with the ToE version ( all legal of course )
-So, What am I missing here ??

- As I see it, I either have a  permanent lousy connection to the ubi forums/game rooms , I damn well hope not, or I need to open some ports..??

-
This is what I get all the time

I said this in another topic:

Quote:
You can do it via the firewall that you both have. If you are both running XP (dunno about Vista) then you can go to the Windows firewall and then the ports and open these ports:

Heroes of Might and Magic 5
TCP Ports - 6668,40000-42999
UDP Ports - 8888,42500,44000,45000

I will add that if you are able to get access into your router (I assume you have a router), then all you need to do is type in 10.1.1.1 or whatever the number is for you, and then open those ports as I said above.

Hope this helps.

Anyway.... I go into the W-Firewall /exceptions and press the Heroes of Might and Magic V  - Tribes of the East ..and add those ports ?

Quote:
Heroes of Might and Magic 5
TCP Ports - 6668,40000-42999
UDP Ports - 8888,42500,44000,45000
40000-42999 thats the ports to ubi's game rooms, right ? and when I add them, do I have to add them one at a time or do I just press add and then 40000-42999  WITH the " - " inbetween the numbers ?

Hi,

- It didn't work, I am not allowed to press " - " when I add a port....  been at it for a week now...doh.

Thanks anyway, Will

EDIT I have added :
6668 [TCP]
44000 [UDP]
45000 [UDP]
42500 [UDP]
8888 [UDP] <-- Eventhough I could already register/enter/ and start a game ... * See my previous post(s)

But I still need to add 40000 to 42999 [TCP] But when I go to W-Firewall / Exceptions and tries to add 40000-42999 ( in one line I am told , I cannot use other than numbers , no " - "  !  Am I missing something here ... could use a little help...

Nah, I doubt that the place I got that info from would make it so you have to enter thousands of numbers.

If you want to look, it is port forwarding.com  or just searching port forwarding into google. I am unable to search for myself since I am on dial up atm.

Hi,

- On that site I have to have ( make ) a static IP and I am not able to do that ... even found the translation of that in my native tounge ! So Slow comes to mind here...

- BUT, besides that I am still certain that it's the game room numbers that I need to have opened ( I was just in the ubi rooms and tried a Duel with a random player... I had a d/c - but can't say if it was because of lag/latency ( ping to ubi ) or if he just hit retreat.... but what I did BEFORE this small duel was that I added the 2 numbers i.e. 40000 and 42999 to the exception list in W-Firewall.

I would, however be glad if anyone could tell me if it is JUST those two numbers I have to make exceptions for or are there more ? I mean there are thousands of numbers between those two..any way that I can add them all in a single command of a sort ?
